Very much worth a visit to the support the volunteers and to see and support native birds that are otherwise very difficult to see in the wild.
I was very disappointed to see an open-air enclosure with feral domestic mallards in it. There was a lone scaup duckling in this enclosure without any adult scaups, so I do not understand why all of the mallards aren't removed. I can only assume this scaup was killed by the aggressive male mallards in the following days or weeks.
It also was very discouraging to see the guide feeding wild shelducks and introduced mallards. Encouraging people to feed water birds is not the best practice in regards to wildlife conservation and education, especially in regards to species that can hybridise. Feeding attracts Grey Ducks into Mallard feeding areas, significantly increasing the rate the two species hybridise.
After learning about the great work being done by the DOC to control and eradicate introduced species in NZ, I don't understand why introduced mallards seemingly get a free pass.

We stopped at this small bird reserve so that we could see the takahe, a bird which was, at one time, thought to be extinct. There are other birds to be seen within the sanctuary which has free admission. An enjoyable visit.

First time seeing Takahe. Amazing birds.
Free to just wander around, but for a very small fee you can join a guided tour at 10:30am.

Lovely spot to fill in time in Te Anau. On the lakeside walk with good interpretation panels. Recommend taking the morning guided tour. DOC staff who take the tour share anecdotes about the clever birds at the park and are happy to answer questions. Best opportunity to get your NZ bird questions answered.

This is a small bird sanctuary run by volunteers, with free admission (you can leave a donation). It’s small but is an opportunity to see rescued birds, of species that you would be unlikely to see in the wild. They have good sized enclosures, and look happy and well cared for.

The bird sanctuary has many of the birds you hear singing but can't spot in the wild as well as rare ducks and birds in their breeding program. It was a great place to see the birds and put the together with their names. Friendly staff, who wanted to educate you about the birds and their survival challenges.

If you are in the area go along but certainly not worth a dedicated trip out there.
There are so many better bird parks in New Zealand.
Many of the birds are in enclosures and it is a bit of a sad sight as not particularly well maintained area. You can spot some birds flying around, especially tuis, but then you can do that pretty well anywhere in NZ.
Overall, not really much to see but it was free entry and we were nearby to see the glow worms anyway.

Beautiful spot, nicely set out and the lawns were well mown but there just wasn't much there. The blue duck enclosure is undergoing repairs so was empty, and I couldn't see anything in one of the other enclosures. Th best part was one of the takahe exhibits where mum was feeding her big baby from the food dispenser. I had thought there might be a walk-through aviary but they were all enclosed.

It's free, but what a disappointment..firstly the toilet is absolutely disgusting...it may be a drop down hole economy loo..but foul is the only word I can use...walked round the cages and pens, most of which were empty..infack saw 2 birds in total. Personally I wouldn't bother. But I did leave a donation

I think the idea (along with the volunteers doing such a great job) is excellent. I have to say that we were underwhelmed by what we could see. Great idea, but more information needed.
