Will be great when finished but the Children’s Garden needs a rethink.

They have a master plan of what the garden will look like upon completion, I dare say that the master plan will fade away in the sun before completion of the park. The view from the viewing platform - “col de Shepp’” is impressive compared to the other hill at the Shepparton cemetery. Otherwise Shepparton is dead plan flat.
There are no toilets.
There is no drinking water.
No shade from the sun.
But there are plenty of flys.
On a positive note entry is free.

The development of these gardens are in the early stages and we could tell it will be a beautiful area in the future. There are currently no facilities here and while some of the paths are now asphalted it is not so easy access for people with disability as some are on a reasonably steep incline/decline. Nice walk for us able bodied people.

Amazing use of the old tip. A great walk, patchwork garden my fave. Awesome views of Shepparton. Great dispersion of natives.

I enjoyed a pleasant walk here recently. Highlights - the walk up the hill is good for one's fitness; beautiful plants to look at; gorgeous view from the top of the hill (you can see for miles); some good signage and interpretation boards. Lowlights - gravel/scree on hills which means you're less sure-footed; no toilets; lots of different gardens developing/proposed but linkage between them doesn't appear to be fabulous. Hopefully in time the development of further gardens according to the master plan, maturation of plants and addition of amenities such as toilets will increase the experience here. It's very promising at present.

This is a really pleasant spot and we had an enjoyable and peaceful picnic here. There has been some real thought put into the merging of “garden” with natural bush and the result is very attractive. It is obviously very new and still being developed so with that in mind there are a couple of things to be aware of. The paths around the park make for easy ( though hilly in parts) walking; but they don’t connect in ways which allow an easy flow between sections. There are a couple of picnic tables, one we found under a decent shelter, but all require a walk from your car to the picnic areas. There is disabled parking but it is placed several car places away from the gates which is perhaps not entirely useful for those needing disabled access. Most concerning of all, and I would really recommend children are kept away, is the children’s garden which looks like it has been designed for anyone except children. There are a number of artistic features created in rust coloured metal, complete with finger traps and falling hazards; even a pile of what could only be described as firewood. Rotting pieces of wood border an apparent sandpit and there is a cubby house made of bed springs. As you enter the children’s garden there is a sign which reads “it is not the intent for the items to be climbed upon.” While it is true that most of the items would be dangerous to climb upon, it’s supposed to be a children’s garden.....In addition there is a relatively large body of unfenced water nearby.
So overall quite a lovely spot but keep children away from the children’s garden.

We visited the Australian Botanical Garden during a recent day visit to Shepparton.
The garden is sited on the old tip and the hard landscaping has been completed. This includes a hill that you can walk up to get an amazing view over the whole complex.
There are walking and cycling tracks around the gardens which take you past billabongs, Creek and picnic areas. There is plenty of seating around to sit and take in the raw beauty of the place.
Being a relatively new garden the plants have yet to grow big enough to really create an effect. It will be interesting to visit in a couple of years to see the difference it makes.
A good place to take the family for a walk.

An Amazing place, such dedication from all the people involved that have put so much into this place it just shows,, highly recommended for all people.. I will add though, would have to be one of the better places in Shepparton to visit but unfortunately it lacks promotion, i have lived in Shepparton for 5 years and just only noticed this place after driving past it hundreds of times.. this needs promoting to capture more people and I highly recommend visiting this place

We visited near the middle of March and it had been very dry. Most plants are suffering and many dying from lack of water. There is no water left in the lower section and we found the whole experience to be very depressing. We appreciate that many people are trying to make this a must-see attraction but at the moment they are having a tough time due to lack of funds and lack of water.
The plans look good and we hope things improve when some rain has fallen
We talked to a very nice volunteer there and she explained all the difficulties they were going through.
Hopefully, when we revisit in a few years time, it will be very different. At this stage there is little to attract anyone to visit. Maybe some artists would donate some sculptures? Any companies willing to sponsor? Can we get schools interested in producing art? Just some suggestions.
It would be nice to have some large trees but we were told that that cannot be done as it is a clay-capped tip.
Good luck to the volunteers. It's a tough battle at this stage.

The gardens continue to improve each time we visit. Grand kids enjoyed the cultural walk and learned things.

The botanic gardens have really evolved since I was here 4 years ago. Lovely walks, all signposted and new sculpture gardens - really inspiring. Now I confess that I am a diehard gardener and just love being outdoors but I think there is something here for everyone. Open space for kids to run around in, easy ground level walks and the more challenging trot up the hill for breathtaking views 360 degrees. Interesting native plantings with good signage. A tip - make sure you are wearing sturdy walking shoes or runners as most of the paths are gravel/ dirt.
