What an incredible experience made all the better by the friendly staff. The train trip and gold panning were incredible but Chinatown is my stand out memory. How those miners managed to live in such primitive conditions is beyond me.

Our Notable Tours group of 45 loved it here. Staff were so welcoming and helpful right from the start. The train ride with informative drivers, gold panning etc. were well-patronised activities. Highlight was the buffet dinner in the saloon - brilliant!

I last visited Shantytown as a young child and loved it then. So when my partner and I planned a road trip to the South Island I had to make Shantytown a must visit. I was not disappointed. It was everything I remembered and more. The little town was alive with all the history I remembered. You could see how folk lived and worked in the harsh conditions of the West Coast town in the gold rush error. It was also nice to see some things haven't changed, ie; The Bank of New Zealand, Hannah's Shoes Store and some items used today still have the same labels on them.
I would thoroughly recommend Shantytown Heritage Park as a must visit. Pam

From moment I entered Heritage Park I was immersed into a bygone era. The old tearooms provided an excellent cooked breakfast ($18) whilst listening to 1920s music on original radio. Steam train journey was a joy travelling through the rain forest with engaging Driver / Conductor both most informative. The old saw mill with visuals, walking through bush to appreciate how the old gold miners lived and worked with excellent interactive models. Shown the old sluicing ways then able to sluice gold myself. The history at this place is staggering. Visiting the old foundry, seeing old boilers and train engines with total immersion experience. A destination to revisit.

Wanted to love this place a bit more but overall felt a bit conned. Entry is relatively expensive in relation to the actual experience. Yes, the site is extensive, there are genuine heritage items on display and some interesting storyboards. However, only three of the township buildings are original, many of the advertised additional attractions were not operational at the time of our visit and the train was a diesel loco, as opposed to steam. We still took the ride on it, although we opted out of the gold panning. Yes, it's fun for kids and it does lend a historical nod to the local Chinese-driven goldrush, but overall it unfortunately presents itself as a rather tacky visitor experience.

It was very fun. I learned a lot of new things and it was really interactive. My favourite thing was the hospital and the train.

Train buffs seemed to be enjoying themselves. It was overpriced, but ok, until we reached the hospital exhibit.
The human remains there are incredibly disrespectful imho. Explained as a “working skeleton” of a 16 year-old girl of Indian descent, she’s in a velvet-lined casket above the eye-line of children who “might be upset” by seeing her. We in Aotearoa-NZ expect respectful repatriation of tangata whenua remains from overseas. If the bones of this human being cannot be returned to her homeland, at least grant her some dignity with a burial or cremation. It’s not ok to still have her on show as some sort of sad display. 😔
Times have actually changed, Shantytown.

It was easy to find. We enjoyed the train ride and watching the Weka and chicks. The exhibits were interesting and varied. The the staff and guided were friendly and knowledgeable. We all enjoyed our time there.

Yet another reminder from history that the deeds of our forebears took some doing and shouldn’t be forgotten. Well done to the conservation group for their restoration work

The concept of the shantytown is a good one, and it shows a lot of interesting history of the place.
However the overall feeling we left with was that it was a low energy place... while there were some staff who were passionate about what they were doing, the place lacked vibrancy.

As a elderly couple comming just our selves Is this attraction meant for adults and Seniors with enough detailed information for adults to find interesting or is it just a funday out aimed at children?
撰写日期:2018年12月4日
Hi Guys.. We enjoyed our visit there, and the short train trip, and the history was interesting. Unfortunately there was a large conference on the day we went, and quite a few of the attractions were closed. If we had known what it was like we probably wouldn't have bothered.

Is this attraction suitable for those with reduced mobility. Are powered mobility scooters available for those who need one.
What distances need to be walked between the various attractive NSN on the site? Thanks?
撰写日期:2018年12月4日
I didn't see any powered scooters there but the distance between exhibits is not too far. However, there are a number of steps, especially with the need to clamber on the train.

Want to try gold panning, is it worthwhile here, where do you go to pan? Any other recommendations for panning, two adults not kids. Thanks.
撰写日期:2018年4月9日
The gold panning is mapped on site, easy to find when you walk down from the train ride up... and someone turns up there when you arrive. It is fun but you 'pan' a preprepared scoop of gravel that is already loaded onto your pan. Its all over in 10-15 minutes and you come away with a wee phial holding some gold grains.

Not in a heavy or shower or consistently wet day if you have kids. Adults would probably spend enough time in each building to make it worth dodging the rain.

How can you get there and back from Greymouth without own transport?
