Visited Friday 11th May. A group of old buildings situated close to the wharf area worth seeking out to discover some of Greymouth's early history.

A mixture of artifacts, photo displays and videos make this historical museum well worth the visit. Great footage of boats trying to clear the bar under challenging conditions. Gives an insight into the resilience and character of the West Coasters

A small museum with things from the good old days, of which there were a few, however the hours of this place seem to fluctuate.

Something to do with earthquake safety of the building and it doesn’t look like it will open any time soo . The council’s website mentions the closure but there are still signs all over Greymouth telling you to go there.

At $6 a ticket, I thought this was well worth the entry. Nothing really blows you away but what a treasure trove of history. If you've got a natural interest in life and history, I think you will enjoy this museum. My favourite piece was the chairs that QE2 and Prince Phillip sat in. Funny.

This is a must see little museum showing all the interesting history of Greymouth and surrounding areas, especially the history of the coal mining, shipping, the Grey river including all the tragedies. Only One of these in the world.

This place is one of those little hidden gems . Think most people (tourist ) would not seek it out but for those who do they will be delighted .
It is crammed packed with images and objects of the past from Greymouth and surrounds . It industries and its peoples.
For a small donation one can learn a lot.
would recommend

An amazing treasure trove of local history. Great photos and exhibits. If you are tracing info on old West coast towns, industries, maritime activity or people, this is a must visit. Stacks of early accessible files have been compiled to help research or just browsing.

I like the sound of this museum and want to visit it while onthe west coast in late Dec/early January. How long should we allow for a visit, please?
One option I am also considering is a trip on the Tranzalpine Express, which unfortunately only gives us one hour in Greymouth but might give us a first look or full look at the museum. (i) how far is it from the station to the museum? (ii) how much of the museum would we see in the time? (iii) would we be likely to need to queue to get in, which is critical if we only had an hour? (iv) if we did the train trip, it would be on 31 December. Are your opening hours any different on New Year's Eve? I've so far not found your opening hours. Thanks, Barbara Stanley

Hi Barbara,
I'm sorry this reply is too late for your visit! Did you manage to visit the museum? It's about a 10-minute walk from the train station, and you can enjoy a walk along the floodwall or through the main street on the way there or back. Unfortunately, it is currently closed as a decision is made on its future. The building needs earthquake strengthening, and public consultation is under way regarding what might happen to the collection. I'm hopeful that the museum can stay in the building, on this freehold property, and that the collection can stay together.
