Although anyone who has seen Cuenca associates it with a rock, hanging houses, the toponym Cuenca comes from the Late Latin form "conca" - the valley between the mountains. These are the paradoxes of etymology... Cuenca owes its appearance as a city to the Arabs. Like many other things in Spain, no matter how hard the Catholic Church and the royal government tried to erase it afterwards. .. By the way, almost everything was erased in Cuenca. There is nothing left of the Arabs. The main attractions are located in the Old Town. The most interesting thing is the view of the city from the San Pablo Bridge, first of all Casas Colgadas - hanging houses, one of which houses the museum of abstract art. As it should be in Spain, the main square of the city is called Plaza Mayor. It is irregular, trapezoidal in shape. The entire eastern part of the square is occupied by a cathedral in the Norman-Gothic style. The cathedral began to be built on the site of the mosque immediately after the conquest of the city from the Moors in the XII century, completed only in the XVI century. But the Town Hall building here on the square is already baroque, XVIII century. To see the whole city from a different angle, you need to climb higher to the remains of the fortress wall. There is an observation deck not only with views of Cuenca and the valley of the Huecar River, but also in the opposite direction to the valley of the Jucar River. Perhaps this is the end of the tour of the city. It can be done in half a day, which I did.

The Cuenca Old Town and Cathedral are worth a visit. The town has done a good job with tourism and has multiple parking lots including a free one by the Castle. While you pass thru old town to get to them, they take you on a route that avoids the narrowest roads. It’s under two hours from Madrid.

At first approach Cuenca looks modern and ugly. Don’t be deceived. The old town is lovely and hangs precariously over the cliff.

While you can walk the main streets, wander onto the side streets for small crowds and small quaint shops and houses.

The Cathedral for us was highlighted by the Choir and some of the side chapels. The cloister wasn’t particularly good, but walking out from there onto the balcony you get excellent views of the city.

Near the front door you’ll find a carved representation of the Last Supper. It’s quite special although not exactly to my liking. Worth a visit. And use the complimentary audio guide. It’s helpful.

Exceptional old town in the middle of a somewhat touristy region, but which is especially enchanting with the Saint Matthew festivals. Alleys and small squares in every nook and cranny on the edges of gorges and cliffs, art galleries and boutiques without too much. Really worth doing without mentioning the buildings including a splendid cathedral

One of the most beautiful cities in Europe, a world heritage site in all fairness. It deserves more than one visit to know everything it offers.

A city to do "on foot"...
The streets are very narrow because the old town is built on a rocky outcrop.
I admit that I didn't have too many problems with car traffic (which is difficult anyway).
I recommend sleeping on site (in the upper part) to enjoy the magnificent terraces of certain restaurants in the evening (on the left part) to enjoy the extraordinary views of the valley.
You can stroll through small streets and take multiple staircases.
A villa which has managed to preserve its specific character on its crest.

Històric Walled Town of Cuenca is located in a high point in the city, in acastilla-la-Mancha Region, in the center of Spain. This old town is wonderful, in fact it is included in Unesco World Heritage. Here you can walk around the old town and see las Casas Colgantes, the very curious cathedral, the main square, the San Pablo bridge, wonderful views of the gorges of Júcar and Huécar Rivers, some churches and some interesting museums. Really, walking around this area is fantastic. Top in the region!

Absolutely stunning historic walled town. So well preserved and reasonably easy to walk. Yes there are cobbled streets and it is up hill to get the best views. Worth the walk to the top of the town. Take it slowly wandering in and out of narrow lanes that lead to wonderful outlooks. The cathedral and the museum are worth paying for the ticket to enter. The camera loves Cuenca. Stop for a cold drink and watch the sun set. Very impressive.
