John Forrest National Park is a great place to go with the family, they have electric bbqs which work really well, there is also a great range of tables and chairs both undercover and out in the open throughout the park. There is a lot of beautiful wildlife that comes by. Lots of carparking and walks for all abilities. There is nowhere to purchase food or drinks. Can get cold so take a jumper or a jacket.

We went there during the week. Ideal due to the lack of visitors around. We think that this park can be visited all year around. There are plenty of trails which can be chosen accordingly (winter-summer etc). Overall nice jem if you live in Perth. About 1 Hour from the city. Paid 15$ for the vehicle. There are a bunch of animals hanging around the Tavern. You will be delighted by the attention paid to you (especially what you are eating). Nice bbq settings and very clean overall.
Recommended.

We went along the Park Rd and reached the parking area. Here there are the John Forrest Tavern, barbecue and picnic facilities and of course the toilets. The entrance fee is AUD 15 per car and pets are not allowed in the park. The parking areas have bays for many cars, but it should be kept in mind that this national park is very popular especially on weekends. Another option to reach John Forrest national park is to use the small car park at the end of Pechey Rd. Here, since the parking is outside the park, you don't have to pay 15 AUD and the access is via a short path that leads to the Swan View Tunnel. John Forrest National Park has several walk trail options for different abilities, but regardless of the entry point, most visitors walk back and forth the path between the tunnel and Hovea Falls. This railway heritage trail is a flat and very easy track also accessible with baby prams. This trail is also popular with bikers, but given its width there is no interference with pedestrians. We first reached the Hovea Falls which are about 1km from the car park. To take a photograph also from below of these small 9m waterfalls it is advisable to continue on the track for about 200 m and immediately after the bridge there is a path on the left that leads to the foot of the falls. We then went back the Swan View Tunnel (3.2 km from Hovea falls) and we stopped to see the National Park falls. These 20-meter waterfalls can be seen from both sides thanks to a small bridge and from below walking down a short narrow path among the rocks. Unfortunately, the view point at the foot of the waterfall is unusable due to a couple of broken boards on the 2-meter wooden bridge. In this situation, some visitors descend an improvised and unmarked 20 m path on the opposite side of the river to get a complete photo of the falls. We walked through the dark tunnel using the light of the mobile phones but to have a better complete view of this former railway tunnel a flashlight is recommended. Going back we did not walk the tunnel but followed the path which, even if it is twice as long, allows a good view of Perth. During the visit we have seen a good number of bush birds including red-tailed black cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksia), splendid fairywren (Malurus splendens), laughing kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae) and New Holland honeyeater (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae). We could also see some kangaroos, many of which however have become accustomed to humans and tens of them are usually seen in the area around the car parking. The visit of this national park, the first established in WA, it is an excellent opportunity to spend a pleasant day in the nature and recent history of WA.

We didn't access this park via the normal entry point but walked in from the roadside as we were simply after a bit of quiet scenery. We soon found several bush paths and saw a lot of wildlife. Great for a quiet walk without too many people. Relaxing.

Absolutely stunning. I touched all the animals and had a bonanza. All the beer cans in the swan view tunnel were picked up by yours truly and honestly I feel like I didn’t get nearly enough praise. I broke my new heels bending over to pat a really cool looking lizard. Apparently they’re called a blue tongue lizard!!? This intrigued me so I touched the tongue and the rude animal bit me!!! After all the amazing environmental work I did, nature turns around and bites me for it😡😠 other than that incident lovely park would go again.

We visited on a very busy weekend and cars were queuing to get into the park. If you are prepared for an extra 5-10 minute walk (and to avoid the $15 charge to park) continue past the entrance and you can park on the roadside (by the woods)
We chose to walk the Eagle View Trail, but would only recommend this if you are a keen walker and have the ability. We walked it clockwise. A beautiful trail, with some stunning views over the city and a great stop for refreshments sitting on the rocks, before the trail heads into the woods. Be sure to take water- the walk takes 4-5 hours depending on how many stops you make.
For the less strenuous, there are shorter trails for families & kids. Lots of picnic spots. Bike trails. Toilets. There is a tavern but it wasn’t open due to covid.
If you want to see Kangaroos, then there is a ‘feeding’ time near to the Tavern at around 11am and in the afternoon. Not sure I totally agreed with this, as surely these wild animals can fend for themselves, but a local lady feeds them regularly (with permission) & the kangaroos know when to turn up! We didn’t see any on our 5 hour walk, so guess if you want to see them, then this is worth doing.

We walked the Heritage trail starting at the small carpark at Pechey Road, where you can park for free and walk into the National Park without paying the $15 car entry.
We walked through the Swan View Tunnel which opened in 1896.
There were quite a few incidents involving near-asphyxiation of train drivers which continued until the tunnel was closed.
We walked pass the National park falls and all the way to Hovea falls. We took the same path back. It was about 8km all together.
Winter was the best time to visit as there was plenty of water in the falls and also not as warm even with the sunshine. We took water which was definitely a good idea as despite it was quite cool to start with it got warmer the further we walked.
I can’t say I would recommend doing this in summer as it would be too hot for walking...unless you only visit the tunnel.

After living in Perth all my life I'd never delved into the hills region; and so a suprise journey offered to me and my friend a pleasant experience. One doesn't need to pay the entry fee if happy to walk an extra 4 minutes (where we parked was at the end of a deadend road and on the walk to the main picnic area we found our own private bridge and bit of water)
The views of the city are unreal and worth the trip; you only need 4-5 hours to be very satisfied that you've seen what this park has to offer.

Took a nice and easy walk to the swan tunnel and back! Views were nice! Some pesky flies as we went during summer. Tavern was good. Had kangaroos, birds and ducks around when you eat!

Excellent national park, can definitely spend a day here even though I was only here for 3 hours I’m glad I came. Paid $15 for car entry fee but it’s well worth it for the size and things to see and do here. Also not a lot of tourists here so definitely still a hidden gem. Come prepared with some snacks and bottles of water, otherwise there is a pub where you can sit and enjoy your meal while seeing some kangaroos passing by! Plenty of various hiking trails on offer, ranging from 30 mins to 5 hours for those thrill seekers. Absolutely worth a visit.

Can you go swimming here? If not, where is the best place to go swimming inland?

People do take dogs but there are signs asking people not to. Many dog owners ignore signs like this. It’s up to you if you decide to bring your dog anyway. Dogs are generally not permitted in National Psrks.

Can anyone tell me if the park is open Easter Sunday please? (Conflicting info online)

Sorry, we were elsewhere over Easter. Can you email the wardens there?

It would not be an easy visit. There is a slight incline/decline depending which way you go from the main car park. The Tavern is a good spot to see kangaroos and the bird life of the park which is accessible. The gravel is hard enough but would not be a smooth ride.

Hi,
We want to do a wildflower walk in John Forrest national park, not the 15 km walk.
I see in the photos there is a Falls walk, a Tunnel walk and a Hovea Falls walk.
Which one do we take to get the best views of all the wild flowers out now?
Julie

Hi Julie, sorry for the delay in replying.. I have no idea what trail to take to see wild flowers.. I have only ever been on the Tunnel walk but not at wildflower time..

What if I come by foot - Can I see a lot or does it not pay off? Is there a route by foot? I am willing to walk two to tree hours.
