Fascinating tour of historic house, now owned by the Earl of Sandwich. Wonderful multi-level gardens, excellent cafe - and a giant tortoise!

We booked the house tour. I have to say I am not usually a fan of house tours as I like to go around at my own pace. However Lynn made the tour very interesting - thanks.
Lovely looking house with a lot of history.
Gardens good also. Reminded me of Isola Bella in Italy.

Visited Mapperton this morning. Would have liked to have taken the house tour as well as the gardens but we were a party of three and only room for two more !
All of us were disappointed at the lack of tlc around the gardens and range of plants. It was a nice walk. Not good value for money.

We saw a programme recently about this garden which inspired us to visit. It is quite unusual being laid out in a small valley with a variety of planting including some topiary leading to an arboretum. Several marked walks around the estate of variable distance and accessibility. Ponds included a terrapin! We went to the café afterwards for a lovely bowl of soup. Worth a visit.

First visit here but unfortunately the weather was grey and drizzly so not conducive for a garden visit. Nevertheless, we persevered and despite getting wet feet in the long grass we thoroughly enjoyed it. It's on different levels and with the terraced slopes could be challenging for the less abled although a wheelchair access is available.
Not pretty parterres and the like but more natural with some Italianate features and some feature planted beds with interesting displays.
The ponds were quite low in water levels and a bit pea-soup but we could see some large (koi?) fish swimming about. Someone said they saw a terrapin. Pleasant way to spend an hour or two.
My partner enjoyed the house tour more than I did. The first 20 minutes was spent outside at the front where we learned about the various additions made by subsequent owners. We only saw a few rooms on the tour the library was not available. Some interesting portraits and we heard quite a bit about the 4th Earl. Some original features remain including a marvellous ornate ceiling in the bedroom. Tour lasts about an hour, not a huge amount to see but worthwhile overall if you like history.

I am trying not to be too negative,but the house tour was,in all honesty, disappointing.
I am new to Historic Houses and this was only the second property I have visited. There was an extra charge of £5 to visit the house,but I think we only saw probably four or five rooms,and spent the first twenty minutes of the one hour tour outside being given the history of the buidling and the family.
I would have rather have paid £10 and seen much more of the house and a longer tour inside. I did also check out the guide book as photography is prohibited to see if there were any photos of the pictures,as there were some excellent artworks in the few locations we visited,but I think there were only four photos of the artworks in the guide book for £5.Again,I would have been happy to have paid a higher price for more content.
The redeeming feature,however,was the exquisite Italianate gardens. I would like to visit the house again if the tour of the house was improved,even if it was at a higher cost.

Visited Mapperton House and gardens. The gardens were a hidden gem behind the house, sitting in a secluded valley and stocked with unusual plants. Not beautifully manicured bit I like a more natural garden.
Don't bother with the house tour. It was boring and uninteresting. Far better to just admire the beautiful exterior.

Beautiful gardens, enjoyed being able to experience the gardens at my own pace. There are different sections to the grounds and the majority are open to the public. It’s large enough to stroll around within an hour, but not so large to be overwhelmed. The plants are just beautiful.
I didn’t take the house tour, but was interested by what I overheard and with hindsight might have booked on.
I enjoyed a lunch at the Coachhouse, although would like to see an addition of quiche and such, to the menu :) and the staff are generally very friendly.
Hopefully the resident Tortoise gets a playmate soon!

Mapperton House & Gardens is beautifully situated in the heart of rural west Dorset. It surrounded by green hills, fields, livestock and streams. The formal gardens are an absolute delight; encompassing statues, a wide variety of flowers, ponds, lakes and grottos. Also, the gardens are on several levels with hidden surprises around every bend. However, the steps are very steep but there is alternative routes for wheelchair/stroller access. As the formal gardens are fairly small - in comparison to other estates - we decided to do the three mile Yellow Walk which takes you along the outside of the estate, through the village and into the valleys . Maps are provided and there are two other longer walks which also looked lovely.
As we are part of HHA we were only able to access the gardens as an additional payment was needed to tour the house. Mapperton house only allows guided tours so we decided to just visit the gardens and do the estate walks - which was so lovely that we did not mind!
The café was super clean and very beautifully decorated. The staff are very welcoming and the toilets are also very clean.
We had a wonderful first visit and will defiantly be returning soon!

A small but fascinating country house, gardens and estate. Narrow road to the parking area. Large indoor cafe with outside tables,chairs and sun umberellas. Food and drinks of average quality with a limited choice. From ordering a sandwich to delivery took 35 minutes! The gardens are a delight and are on several levels with ponds in a hidden valley style setting. The house tour of an hour with two guides explaning its history and that of the families over the centuries is most interesting, although a tad too long. Overall well worth a visit though.

Sorry. Only just seen this and probably too late for you. It’s a bit limited for a mobility scooter. It will work i. Some of the grounds but not really in the house. Pity because Mapperton is a great visit.
Is there a children's play area at all, grandchildren aged 6 and 2

I went with a group from the National Trust Oakleaves. I think it was bout £18 to get in the house. The café was in a converted barn. There was a small gift shop, and really beautiful gardens at the back of the house. The entry to the house is on a timed basis.
