Superb views from above then from the look point below. Most deffinitely worth a visit. Don't be put off by the narrow steep road down to the look point. Views are stunning.

Encantador!

Bigger and older than you might think.

This Rupestrian hermitage is well tucked away in the countryside and, without the benefit of a map, could take some finding. From Ronda old city head south via the Plaza Rueda Alameda and on to Calle Torrejones. Follow this street and take the first turning on your right after the Restaurante La Cuadra, and then take the right fork that has a small wooden sign on a post indicating the Ermita Rupestre. From this point, stick with the main track, this is the Carill Virgen de la Cabeza, it is about 3.5 kilometres along this track to get to the Ermita. There is a parking area at the end in which to leave your car, since this is as far as you can go in one. Then choose the right hand downward sloping track that probably has a chain across it. The paved track is quite steep, but after about 200 metres you will see the Rupestrian Church in front of you. Take your time and bear in mind that you have to come back up the same way. It may not be such a good idea to tackle this if it is wet.
This hermitage, also known as the Cuevas de San Antón, was built around the end of the 9th century by the Mozarab Christians on the site of a small place of worship. The original cave was amplified to the extent of some 272 square metres to cater for a permanent hermitage of up to ten monks and provide a chapel and living quarters for its incumbents.
At this time Ronda was under Muslim rule, consequently Christians, while tolerated, were required to worship outside of the city walls. Thus, the hermitage provided a home for the monks who would visit Christian communities in the area, principally to administer mass and hear confessions and then they would return home to sleep and probably enjoy the far reaching views offered by the hermitage, too.
Providing a classic example of a rupestrian church, the hermitage is, unfortunately these days, one of the few remaining. Its last period of use as a religious centre was throughout most of the 18th century, but subsequently, it fell into disuse and disrepair.

Thanks for reading this and if you've found it helpful I'd appreciate a ‘thumbs up’ below.

I have lived in Ronda for 5 years and for the first time visited the hidden church yesterday.
The church itself is a hidden gem with beautiful coves but the views towards Ronda are spectacular. Definitely worth the walk or drive.

Was staying with friends in Spain and they suggested we visit...oh my lord, they weren’t wrong. The views are amazing, there are walks for the more adventurous and with no mobility issues. Overall there is plenty to see, do and places to eat but it’s worth looking for yourself, you won’t be disappointed.
