I'm not a Catholic, but was still interested to read about the history of the Mass Rock in Cardonagh after the public practice of Catholicism was banned by Oliver Cromwell in the 17th century.

This sheltered grove allowed the locals to continue their worship undiscovered. It is well signposted from Cardonagh and we had the place to ourselves. There is a very peaceful atmosphere. everything is covered in moss which makes it appear as though it's been trapped in a time warp. Enchanting.

I was on a pilgrimage from Canada and came across this amazing spot. Not only the beauty of nature - trees and birds and history but spirituality. We offered prayers here. Peaceful and profound

Lovely place to go alone and meditate and reflect on times gone by when those who came before us protected the priests who risked their lives in saying mass

Off the beaten track the Mass Rock in Carndonagh is an interesting find. The lead up to the mass rock is quaint and quiet before the track opens up into this naturally abundant but covered space. Both myself and my partner couldn't help but imagine the people and children that must have attended mass here way back when, what we could only imagine would be the crowds, secrecy and hush surrounding it all. It was fascinating and haunting at the same time. We both acknowledged on our way back to the car that the surrounding trees and nature in general surely had some stories to tell, if only they could talk!

Was visiting the area and decided to go to see the mass rock . Impressive enough but the rainy weather however dampened the day. May come back in the summer when the weather is better. Beautiful area though.

Because of the Penal Laws and Cromwell's campaign against the Irish, isolated areas were sought to hold mass. As it was illegal, services were not scheduled, so news of services was spread by word of mouth. I'm not sure how many are left here, but when I heard of this one in Carndonagh, I decided to visit.

It's about 12 miles north of Buncrana on the R238, and easy enough to find. Head north on the R238 up as far as the North Pole Bar, and turn right on R244 for Carndonagh. You'll come to a T Junction, where you turn left towards Ballyliffin, and it's only a couple of hundred meters down. It's well signposted (see photos), but bring your wellies as it can be fairly mucky. Not far from St Patrick's Cross, which you visit also.

These Irish Mass Rocks, as well as giving the above insight into our more recent history, seem to be a rich part of our pagan past. They played a ritual part in the life of Celtic and pre Celtic peoples. The extraordinary lighting which the local photographer captured so perfectly has to be experienced to appreciate how sacred this site feels.

The Mass Rock at Woodtop Carndonagh dates back to the Penal Laws of 1690 when Priests were forbidden to celebrate Mass. As a result of these laws places of worship were often erected in high concealed woodlands that offered shelter from the elements and the Crown Forces. This is a natural, unspoilt area that serves as a stark reminder of the hardships that the Irish population had to suffer under British Rule.
