It is a truly wonderful museum of a truly dark period of world history. The museum has a different feel of it compared to others on the matter and is very respectful and tastefully curated.
The different rooms cover the entire war, from its roots in the aftermath of WW1, through the rise of Facism and Socialism, to the swapping of allegiances and the events that came after; war crime trials, rebuilding and repatriation.
I would advise going early (it doesn't open till 10 am mostly, though), we spent so long looking at everything they closed and had to ask us to leave!

I did my research and read many reviews. Some of those who are unhappy could be easily satisfied if they simply bought tickets online and saw time slots that were not already available. For example, if somebody comes at Sat noon and wants to buy tickets for the same Sat, they would see there is not availability Or someone wants to pay in euros but is asked to pay in Polish zlotys. After all, why would they accept euros at their cash desk? You could go online and buy tickets in whatever currency you want.
Some of them are really worrisome. They sometimes don't open at set times without explaining why.
Just a heads-up, there are a few luggage size restrictions. But don't worry, you can easily store oversized luggage in storage boxes. You'll need to pay for the boxes with PLN coins. The lovely ladies at the ticket counter were so helpful and kind. They lent us a token to use instead of coins.
I've got to admit, I do miss having a map to help me navigate. Anywhere I go. Any museum, park.. We went inside, crossed the gates with ticket readers and found ourselves there. Now what? Should we follow the people? Or maybe sit on the benches? I'd love to see a general traffic flow guide, map or exposition numbers...
I was really happy to see how many places there were to sit in the main area! If you're really into history, you'll find yourself walking or standing for hours, reading and watching A LOT.
But back to that initial dilemma. I was totally lost at the start! I followed the crowds, and after about an hour, I finally found an orientational map! At that point I'd already realised that there were different areas dedicated to different aspects of war.
For example, there was a whole section devoted to gas masks! I don't know what I was expecting, but maybe more of a timeline? It's hard to describe, but there was a lot there, but it wasn't quite enough for me.
There were lots of posters about communism, which I didn't understand why there were. I'm old enough to remember when the Russian language was taught at school, so I can read the titles on the posters in Cyrillic. Those posters were everywhere when I was a child. I wonder why they're in the museum of WWI?
There were lots of rooms where you could watch the videos again and again, but only a few of them had somewhere to sit while you watched. I was really hoping to see more guns and weapons used during WWII! We've seen so many texts and newspapers... It's just reading, reading, reading! I really think it would be perfect if I could go back for a third or fourth time. By then I'd already have a general idea and I'd want to study the details. As the firstcomer there, I was really hoping to see some "fireworks" - lots of things from the war, not just photographs and newspapers, and I would have loved to see some weapons too! I know how much passion and dedication goes into this exhibition, and I would never want to undervalue their hard work. I'm so proud of the people who created this and they did a fantastic job! I just wanted to give a few friendly tips to make it even better! I think it would be great to have a navigation map, and it would be really helpful to have more information in English about why the entry is not open when it should be. It would also be nice to have more places to sit in the video sections.
After an hour and a half, I felt like I'd been to IKEA! My husband was ever so kind and asked me if I had seen some special rooms at the beginning. I haven't, but if I wanted to go back, I'd have to walk "miles" against the flow of all those people (and I haven't seen any shortcuts between the different departments, like between the kitchen and bedroom departments).
There were "ear speakers on the line cords" next to some particular expositions. Thankfully, we're past the pandemic, but it does seem a little unhygienic that people took the same line cord and put the speaker to their ears one after another without cleaning it. I know I might sound a bit paranoid, but there are so many viruses, bacteria, etc. that this setup is like a banknote

This museum is very detailed, and you should set aside more time for it than you think. The whole space is underground, and the sections are numbered, so you will progress chronologically through the main exhibit. You can get an audio guide, join a tour, or just go through on your own, as the exhibits have English translation. Everything is very well presented, and there are a lot of interactive elements like videos as well. Highly recommend!

An excellent museum which explains the background to the start of WW2, the reasons for it and the main ‘characters’ involved. It also however describes the horrors of a war that affected so many ordinary people in so many terrible ways. The visitors throughout the exhibition were all very quiet and respectful. I found the whole exhibition to be incredibly moving but was so emotionally affected that I went through the last part more quickly as I was finding it all a bit difficult to experience. I did stop at the very end to view the film that needed no explanation or subtitles and was showing TV and other filmed sequences of the current atrocities being experienced in the world. No words were needed to show that we have learned nothing from the past.

Buying tickets online for an attraction or train proved to be impossible.Either the sites don't load or they will say 'access denied'.This museum too sells tickets online with time slots we could not buy from our home country.Even at Gdansk a night before we tried but could not buy it.The website does say that one can start buying tickets physically at 0930 but the staff did not open the main gate to the building till 1000.as a result the queue were long but quick moving. One needs to buy the audio guide separately. You need to keep your bags in the lockers.
Dark, depressing and gloomy was my first thought but it suits the aura of this museum.
As a student in India, we have read about WW2 but it was just 3-4 page long chapter and as India was too far from Europe there was hardly any impact on people around me .So it never made much impression. For us, partition of India and the subsequent mass migration was much more significant as I would literally see/hear people around me talking or living this event.Over the years, through books and movies I started having better understanding of this WW2 which defined European history. Still,it did not shock me like it did when I visited the museum.
I am glad we -2 adults and 2 teens who study WW2 extensively as part of O level History, chose to visit this museum .The boys knew most of the defining moments of WW2 but for us -their parents it was totally new learning. And the same question kept on popping in my mind' why' and what made us humans so cruel ,so passive,so indifferent to other people's suffering. How come the sufferers themselves are making innocent people suffer now?Did we learn nothing from such events ?Saddening really!Still,I would encourage every visitor to visit this museum just to see this defining moment of world history.
There are displays which show a street before war and later after war, footage of people being harassed in streets,a model of Russian tank in a street .Quite a well planned museum and must visit for history students .
A bit tiring as one moves from one room to another guided by an audio guide and as it was crowded so finding a place to sit and relax your feet was not always possible.
The tour ends and one exists to light, laughing coming from cafeteria.
The cafeteria serves lovely food/drink though you need to close your mind to the horrifying impression of the displays to enjoy it.If you are still troubled by what you saw then it should be skipped. The museum shop is close by but again you need to be in right mindset to be able to buy stuff.
The museum building looks out of place in the traditional setup of Gdansk but is impressive and easily recognisable even from a distance as you do a river cruise .Personally one time was enough for me .

Very well made museum with a lot of details from the past. Takes its time to go through (for us 3 hours and then we still speeded on a bit in the end).

We were very impressed with the size of the museum and even more surprised to find it was all under ground. The exhibitions are eye opening, we really appreciated and valued the audio self paced tour. This meant we were able to translate the exhibitions and be toured independently around the museum. We spent around 4 hours here and could have stayed longer! Great museum!

Don't pay unless you have at least 4-5 hours before closing. Ticket counter tells you, you just need 2.5 hours to see it, it's a lie, don't do it. I had 3 hrs, so I bought an audio guide. Security told me museum was closed and I was barely at the half way point. I spoke to the blonde manager at Ticket information, who was very rude and unwilling to accommodate a return ticket. Despite acknowledging they recommend 2.5 hrs, he said "you really need 3 days to see everything, because it's big." I told him i was mislead on the time needed and he refused profusely to accommodate a re-entry ticket for next day, instead he asked me to pay again. Having to repeat my case, at best he offered a reduced price but nonetheless to pay again. With a smirk, he said he's the highest boss there and nobody will help me when I asked for higher assistance. He is very rude and refused to give his name to write to the museum's email for customer relations.

An important museum everyone should have. The museum is beautifully set up with history that leads us from pre-war to modern times.
Many touching stories from both sides of the war. You get a little insight into what it was like to live while the war was devastating.
This is a museum everyone should visit if they have the opportunity. The entrance fee is about NOK 80 per person. Recommend to remember to eat before you come or to take a snack in the museum cafe (here there is a lot of good). Remember to bring something to drink as well (there is no possibility to buy water once you have entered the exhibition).
We spent 3-4 hours on the entire exhibition and then we didn’t read everything. We didn't have an audio guide.

Having visited both, if someone did not have sufficient available time to visit both, which one between Second World War (Muzeum II Wojny Swiatowej) and European Solidarity Centre (Europejskie Centrum Solidarności) would you most recommend?
撰写日期:2019年7月23日
Is it best to book admission before going, or is it easy to just walk in. Thanks
撰写日期:2018年11月18日
No need to book. Just give yourself enough time to go round the Museum.
