多瑙河边的铁鞋：很容易被人忽略的纪念景点，离国会大厦不远。这50双铁鞋是用来纪念二战时在匈牙利遇难的50万犹太人。二战时很多犹太人在这里被枪决后推入多瑙河。鞋子有男有女，有大有小，有新有旧，让人心里有说不出的滋味。

现场会有人带鲜花致意，人在现场会被当下的情景感染，心情有点沈重。战争何其残酷，犹太人不分男女被逼着一个一个绝望跳入多瑙河。

我们在日落前的傍晚去看了纪念碑。那个时候人不是很多。这些鞋子代表了那些在二战中被法西斯民兵杀害的人，他们被要求脱下鞋子，然后被射击扔进河里。如果你有机会参观这座美丽的城市，这里是不能错过的。

有时候，最简单的雕像/纪念碑也可能是最强大的。这是一个必看的景点，但是在你去之前你需要知道这个故事。一想到犹太人被告知要留下他们所有的贵重物品，包括鞋子，然后被枪毙，扔进多瑙河，心里就很痛苦。多么可怕的历史时刻。

Is thé monúment accessible with a wheelchair? Is there a toilet for the handicapped, with a handle on both sides of the seat?

This monument is on the river bank, on the pavement next to the road. It is accessible by wheelchair but there are no facilities - it is open air.

There is a tram stop right next to the parliament building, not sure which number that is, google will show you. From there head towards the river, some stairs down and you are there. I would guess about 100 meters to walk.

I don't know the tram stop as we had walked to it after passing the Parliament. Here's what Wikipedia says "The monument is located on the Pest side of the Danube Promenade in line with where Zoltan Street would meet the Danube if it continued that far, about 300 metres (980 ft) south of the Hungarian Parliament and near the Hungarian Academy of Sciences; between Roosevelt Square and Kossuth square.[1]". I don't think you'll have too much difficulty finding it as it is one of the top sites in Budapest. There were plenty of tourists the day we visited; our challenge was finding a location to photograph without people obstructing the many pairs of sculptured shoes.

This memorial is to the 20,000 Jews who were shot on the shores of the Danube by the Hungarian Arrow-Cross (Nylas), an official arm of the Hungarian government. While some non-Jews would have suffered this fate, namely those that had the amazing courage to try to help Jews, an offence punishable by immediate execution, this execution process was intended exclusively for Jews as part of the genocide that was passionately supported by the Hungarian Arrow-Cross.
The absence of the mention of Jews on the plaques is an example of the whitewashing by the Hungarian government of the role of the Hungarian Arrow Cross in the Jewish genocide of WWII. The presence of a plaque in Hebrew is evidence of the true history represented by the Shoes but very few people who visit the memorial would understand its significance.

which side is best to stay on as in a hotel buda or pest? many thanks

Both sides are fine, however the majority of sites are on the Pest side. Regardless of which side you stay on, if you take public transit, the Metros all connect to each other from either side of the Danube and make it extremely easy and quick to get around. The Buda side would be quieter.

Bonjour,
Je suis d'accord il faut tout faire à pied, on découvre des trésors les yeux en l'air et les chaussures sont le long du Danube et il n'y a qu'à pied que vous pouvez les voir près du Parlement et ce n'est pas le quartier juif !

I think that the Budapest Card is good value if you are going to do a lot of the included museums/activities in a short time and travel on public transport all the time. Budapest is a very walkable city. And public transport is generally inexpensive. You can get a block of ten tickets for 3000huf but heritage transport services are extra.
You can get the Budapest card at the airport when you arrive. Overall, if you are there for a short period and want to pack in a lot of sightseeing, the City card is good value.
