This place is also called the Tolerance Center. There are many different art exhibitions and one exhibition about Jewish life in Lithuania.
In Samuel Bak Museum, you can see paintings of Samuel Bak. He is an American painter and writer who was born in Vilnius in 1933 and survived the Holocaust.

It was very interesting (also sad) to learn about the Jewish community that once bloomed in Lithuania. I especially enjoyed the paintings of Samuel Bak. Here you can buy an entrance ticket also to the Holocaust exhibition (located about a 15 minute walk away), and pay 5 euros in total (adult), for this museum and the holocaust exhibition.

Named for the foremost non-Hasidic religious leader of his time, the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum includes several locations – the Tolerance Center, the Holocaust Exposition (nearby), and the Memorial at Paneriai. This review covers the Tolerance Center which includes Judaica, historical exhibits and art galleries.
The museum has something for everyone. We particularly enjoyed the section on the history of Jewish life in Lithuania illustrated with paintings and photographs accompanying very informative and well-written text. The exhibit of Bartosz Fratczak’s photographs of the remaining traces of vanished Jewish communities in Lithuania’s more rural localities evokes these lost worlds with exquisite and tragic black and white photographs and captions.
The most revelatory section was certainly the exhibit of the paintings of Samuel Bak, a Vilnius-born artist, who held is first exhibit as a nine-year-old in the Vilnius Ghetto. His paintings display very fine brush technique and a powerful eye for detail in horrific and beautiful scenes. A number of the paintings have a surreal, almost Dali-esque sensibility, but without the preciousness and lack of emotional resonance that those terms imply. Samuel Bak’s work is as deeply emotional and profoundly thought provoking as it is magnificently rendered. Take your time with his paintings. They draw you in and as you look, you see layers of detail reminiscent of the finest early Renaissance paintings with their subjects in the foreground and narrative details embedded in the background. Be sure to watch the video about his life and work and how his life, including how he survived the Holocaust, illuminates his work.
If you like to walk, the route from the Choral Synagogue to the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum and then to the Holocaust Exhibition (The Green House), will give you an informative and moving introduction to Jewish life in Lithuania past and present. The total walking time, one-way at a relaxed pace, is under half an hour.

Roughly half the people in Vilnius were Jewish before WWII. Almost all perished!!! The museum reflects a low budget, but the posters are well done and the family pictures and stories well told.
Ninety percent of all Jews in Lithuania were killed most often by shooting or burning as the concentration camps required transport.
A visit to the local forests where most of this took place is unnerving.

Take your time, enjoy the paintings, listen to video interviews and learn more about this great Vilnius born artist. See the ways in which a Jewish Holocaust survivor depicts images of war and contemporary culture.
Bak studied painting in Munich, emigrating to Israel in 1948. There he studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, later studied and lived in Paris, New York, and Lausanne. The artist’s works have been exhibited at the Tel Aviv Museum, the Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf, and the Bezalel Museum in Jerusalem. S. Bak currently lives in Boston.
Visiting this part of a museum was a memorable experience.
Museum is free of charge every last Sunday of the month.

Musée intéressant et bien documenté.
Étant francophone nous aurions aimé un audioguide en français pour pouvoir tout comprendre.

Even though the story is told many times in many places it is none the less such a moving experience. This Museum tells the story from a Lithuanian perspective and in particular via the testimony of hollocaust survivors who were children at the time. Well worth the effort of finding the place and spending time there.
