This museum provides a survey of Estonian art from various time periods: Soviet, Modernism, and the current Age of Anthropocene, which shows the relationship between art and the environment. It is a unique museum and you will are unlikely to see art like this at other museums in the world.

This museum is interesting, versatile and well-planned. The different floors offer different exhibitions; some are modern and some are historic. They also have a café that offers salty and sweet and a nice gift shop where I bought a few cards of my favorite paintings. On the way to the museum you walk through a big park called Kadriorg park, which also has beautiful things to explore. We stopped by the colorful Kadriorg castle and walked around the little park area outside, which was very pretty. We spent a nice half-day at this museum and the area around, and I recommend a visit!

We don’t know how many people outside of Estonia come to this museum, and that is a shame because it is a terrific place to visit.
KUMU is at the edge of Kadriorg Park not far from the President’s palace. It is easy to combine with a trip to the park or the nearby Kadriorg palace and museum.
I am not a fan of much modern architecture, but this building is simply stunning, both inside and out. There are curved lines everywhere, and the exhibition spaces are well-lit and well-suited to display the artwork. It's worth a visit just to see the building.
You likely will not recognize many of the artists, most of who are Estonian and not seen much out of the country. The focus is mainly on art of the 1900s up to the present. The quality reminded me a lot of the post-Impressionist art in the Tretyakov modern museum in Moscow or the similar museum in Prague. We did not recognize the names of many of the artists, but that didn't matter as there were many pieces we liked a great deal.
The museum not only reflects Estonian art but the country's own eventful history since around 1900. They confront it directly, including the time when Estonia was part of the Soviet Union.
The art from the Soviet era includes the classic, and over-the-top, Soviet realist paintings that make everyone appear to shine with Communist fervor.
The curators are very creative. In two rooms they displayed some older and (to me) less interesting works in arrays that were themselves artistic, such as a room filled with both new and old busts arranged in a kind of matrix.
One floor was filled with Ukrainian art (again mostly from the 20th century) that included some avant-garde works that you likely have never seen. This included some fun and interesting theater posters.
Another had contemporary art, some of which will raise that question you hear in most contemporary art museums of whether a particular work is art at all. That is actually a fair question. You can either enjoy the art or, if not, just go to a different floor.
This is a site that succeeds on several levels. We also found that the whole was greater than the sum of its parts and that we came away with strong and positive feelings about Estonian culture.

I visited this museum after seeing the exhibitions at the Kadriog and Mikkelli Museums. They show paintings, arts, porcelains, vases, etc generally found in an Art Museum. The Kumu Museum, housed in a very modern, silver Buidling, has more modern types of exhibits.
The staff recommended starting the tour by taking the elevator to the Fifth Floor and visiting its modern arts, paintings, etc. When done, I proceeded to the other lower floors with quaint and interesting presentations.
There is a restaurant and Terrace at this museum. I enjoyed my visit here.

A nice museum in a beautiful building. They have Estonian art both old and really new. Pictures mostly but also other things.
If you plan to do a lot of museum etc. I would recommend the Tallinn card which makes it at lot more affordable.

If you like art and history, this museum is a must! The building itself is modern and clean. The art exhibits were diverse, spanning from the USSR era to more recent times. I participated in a group activity which lasted 3 hours. The Team Art digital installation was phenomenal! It feels like you are immersed in an ocean, a garden, and standing around a campfire. If you've been to the Van Gogh digital art experience, it is very similar to that. I recommend partaking in the activities they offer if you have the time. The cafe is also very quaint with wonderful food and coffee options.

This museum is housed in a wonderful purpose-built space designed by a Finnish architect. The art chronicles modern art through the tortured history of Estonia, from brief independence, through occupation by the Soviets, then the Nazis, then the Soviets again, and finally independence again. Each change generated a dramatic shift in what "art" was acceptable. Now independent again, they make no secret of their sympathies in the Ukraine-Russia war, as they fear another occupation by Russia.

You can either take tram 1 or 3, or walking along the beautiful coast line, which is my favorite route. The art museum is located in the vicinity of the old royal Summer residence, which is a fascinating art museum itself!
