Tartu city center is probably the top priority for any visitors because that is where you get exposed to the city spirit. Your experience may vary depending on the season. The central square is covered in all the restaurants' verandas during the summer, while December brings the Christmas market and the ice rink.
The city's main artery is Ruutli street, a massive gastronomic hub with a great diversity of bars, cafés, and restaurants. Due to the high concentration of establishments, there are plenty of chances to discover something new even if you spend several days wandering around the city center.
Unfortunately, the Great Fire of Tartu (1775) annihilated the majority of historical wooden buildings, but there are still several magnificent relics preserved in the city center. You can visit the 14th-century gothic church or appreciate the ruins of the medieval cathedral. For those obsessed with the history of fortifications, there are 17th-century bastions surrounding the former citadel and a piece of a 14th-century town wall. The architectural heritage within the city center definitely catches the eye and creates an unforgettable atmosphere that works well with any weather.
Since several faculty buildings of the University of Tartu are also located in the city center, there's a high chance to meet international students here and get an idea of how a digital-era Babylon functions. Actually, asking the locals for recommendations is a common practice, and doing so can help you experience Tartu from different angles because it's much easier when someone introduces you to all the amazing places and stories the city center possesses.

This is why you come to Tartu. You want to see Town Hall Square and the 'Kissing Students' and all the old pretty buildings. It's very picturesque! But don't forget to venture a little further out as well.

Чудесный маленький город . Красивая ратуша , река и набережная . Много маленьких кафе и ресторанов . Есть где посидеть и погулять . Всегда много бесплатных летних мероприятий , концертов . Это дополнительный бонус .

Very cosy with a lot of cafes and shops. I have really nice walk. There are a lot what to see. Spend here at least 2 days.

L'endroit est sympathique mais assez petit. À noter la patinoire d'extérieure sur la place centrale qui est très sympa pour passer un moment convivial.

The old city is smal but very cozy! A nice square with ice skating park and the park close to the river are definitely my favorite places! Walking around the old city, you can also find souvenirs shop and nice cafes! A couple of big shopping malls are present as well! It’s been a nice surprise and a lovely experience!

Так как Тартусский университет является градообразующим предприятием, то весь Старый город, по сути один большой студенческий городок. В средние века территория университетского города была отгорожена от остального города стеной, здесь действовал свой закон и своя полиция. Провинившихся студентов сажали в отдельную университетскую тюрьму. Отличное место для прогулок.

Attirati dalla ottime recensioni delle guide turistiche, che parlavano di Tartu come della seconda città più importante e più bella di tutta l'Estonia, e del fatto che è stata eletta capitale della cultura per il 2024, decidiamo di visitarla.
La città è carina, ma non eccezionale, mi aspettavo molto di più, il centro è di ridotte dimensioni si visita velocemente, non vale la pena andare e tornare in giornata per visitare questa località, 2 e 20 per andare e 2 e 20 per tornare da Tallinn sono troppe, meglio visitare altri centri molto più carini come Haapsalu, Parnu e Narva, meritano molto di più di Tartu.
