Wonderful museum - learning about the Lipke family is like hearing stories from an elderly relative, except that the family is remarkable in their courage in the face of evil. Note also the building's design -- a true mix of old and new. the architect behind the museum is behind many renovations around Latvia, and in Kipsala in particular. Strongly recommend.

Hidden amongst the newly restored redbricks, clapboards and picket fences of Kipsala is a testament to how one person really can make a difference.
Zanis Lipke had no history of activism or rebellion. He just couldn't see his fellow Latvians through the filter of cold hate the Nazis did, and he couldn't just do nothing. So he saved as many Jews as he could and hid them in bunkers in his garden. After the war the KGB wanted to know what he got for doing it, which is an odd line of questioning for a socialist to adopt.
The striking, modern building contains all the frightened claustrophobia of the people he hid, trying to stay quiet, but also all the bravery of Zanis, his family and helpers. He always wondered about the ones he couldn't save, and sadly but rightly this museum does too.
The district of Kipsala island around the museum is beautiful, and well worth exploring afterwards. Not that that's really the point...

If you’re in Riga, please make your way to this museum. It is worth the visit and education and shows the beauty and compassion people are capable of having. We learned a great deal and were impressed by the design and layout of the museum. We were very touched learning about the humanity of the Lipke family and left feeling highly pleased that this place existed. We need more feel good places like this in the world.

What a place, what a location and what a person. This is a must. Very human with no nonsense hero stuff. Really liked the feel of this place, small cobblestone street, the house, the atmosphere and the story of Zanis Lipke who was hardly your classic good guy character and that is a reason to love him so much. Thank you!

Eine Geschichte spannender als Schindlers Liste, erzählt in einem modernen und freundlichem Museum.
Die Begrüßung war herzlich und freundlich erst in gutem Englisch, bis der Museumsnitarbeiter feststellte, dass wir deutsch sprechen, was er auch fließend konnte.

I know this is a little out the way of other attractions but this really is a must visit. Its free to visit but I ended up donating more than I spent getting into most museums. The effort gone into this is fantastic extremely informative the audio tour was great volunteers fantastic and the amount of artefacts they have managed to get together is extraordinary. Managed to fit this in on our last day in Riga and we were so glad we did. The views over the river as you walk from the tram stop are a nice little bonus also. If you are in Riga though I implore you to put aside an hour or so to visit this hidden gem of a museum.

A small museum and purely based around a husband and wife’s story about concealing Jews in their wood house. However, their story is fascinating and wonderful to educate myself with. Free to enter too.
