Effie, en outre d’être guide, est archéologue de formation et a participé aux dernières fouilles dans la ville haute de Monemvasia ainsi qu’aux travaux de réhabilitation. C’est son amour pour la ville qui la fait y rester : cela se ressent fortement dans ses explications qui ne se limitent pas qu’aux villes haute et basse de Monemvasia mais aussi à la culture grecque en général (la culture des olives, la faune et la flore, ses conseils pour la meilleure limonade de la ville…). Nous avons visité au travers d’un tour privé avec deux enfants dont un en bas âge : elle s’est complètement adaptée à notre rythme notamment avec notre fille de 10 ans avec qui elle a énormément échangé. Elle est très sympathique et a su faire les pauses à l’ombre pour les explications. Nous ne pouvons que la conseiller fortement pour mieux découvrir la merveilleuse ville de Monenvasia.

We received an e-mail that the booking is not necessary, just show up 10 minutes before the tour start. We were not the only people there who waited the tour guide.

Εχοντας διαβάσει πολυάριθμες κριτικές που εκθείαζαν την ξενάγηση στο Κάστρο της Μονεμβασιάς με την Effie, κλείσαμε και εμείς για μια ξενάγηση τεσσάρων ατόμων, δυο ενηλίκων και δυο παιδιών σήμερα το πρωι. Συμπληρώσαμε την κατάλληλη φόρμα στο διαδίκτυο. Σύμφωνα με το μειλ που λάβαμε η Effie θα μας περίμενε στην είσοδο του Κάστρου της Μονεμβασιάς στις 09.30 το πρωι, Κατά την κράτηση μας ζητήθηκε και αριθμός κινητού τηλεφώνου τον οποίο και δόσαμε. Οσο είδατε εσείς την Effie άλλο τόσο την είδαμε και εμείς. Εστειλα γραπτό μήνυμα μετά από αναμονή 20 λεπτών για να ξέρω τελικά εάν η ξενάγηση θα γίνει ή όχι, μα καμία απάντηση δεν έλαβα. Κρίμα να πολυδιαφημίζονται ξεναγήσεις τέτοιου είδους.

My wife and I and a French family (father, mother, and daughter) went on a tour of the upper and lower town with Effie on Oct. 1 and had a most enjoyable and informative time. She is engaging and very knowledgeable about many things--not only the archaeology and anthropology of Monemvasia but also Greek culture and history. She was a joy to spend time with, and we learned a lot. Thank you Effie.

Effie led our multi-gen family group of 17 people (ages 15-82) on a 3hr walk through Monemvasia. We visited both the lower and upper villages...she knows absolutely everything about the history, architecture, archeology and culture of the town. It was an extremely hot day, and she managed to find every inch of shade to keep us cool during the walk...and she was sensitive to the different fitness levels within our group. We loved Monemvasia, and I would go back and do her tour again. I booked her through TourHQ...she travels a lot during the winter months, so don't fret if she doesn't respond to emails immediately.

Six of us arranged to have a castle tour on our cruise stop in Monemvasia. Having read the reviews, we booked a tour and specifically requested Effie. We weren't disappointed at all. Effie was on time, personable, and so very, very knowledgeable about the old and new town. She was also a great help with two in our group who had some difficulty navigating the terrain and she created walking sticks for four of us. Our tour with her was the best experience we had on our whole trip. If you're going to Monemvasia, take this tour and request Effie, you won't be sorry!
On a side note, one person in our group lost her phone on our tour. That person ran into Effie the next day in Gythion (crazy fluke) and she told them that she had found the phone. We gave her information on how to send the phone via a prepaid Fed Ex account on to a hotel where we would be the following week. Unfortunately, Fed Ex doesn't service the Monemvasia area, so Effie took it upon herself to make other arrangements to get the phone to our hotel at her own expense. She's a class act all the way.

We arranged a guided tour of the Castle Town with Monemvasia Tours (Dimitris) and had email confirmations in hand. On the day of the tour, our guide didn't show. We waited 30 minutes and called/texted to no avail. A total of 5 people were left stranded at the gate. Maybe the operator didn't think the group was worth the effort?
Undeterred, we did our own exploration of both Lower and Upper Towns. Of course, we missed a lot of the history and culture that a guide would share, but we enjoyed ourselves immensely. Lower Town is easily accessible along cobblestone streets but the path to Upper Town requires close attention. It's steep with loose stones and debris that could be troublesome. Unobstructed panoramic views from the top are well worth the climb!

I've just read your review and I was very surprised as I don't remember any confirmed tour that has been cancelled without notice during all those years. Actually, I checked my whole email correspondence and the only cancellation so far was for the scheduled tour on September 13th due to a sudden health issue of the guide, but in any case I had sent a cancellation email the night before. I've also checked my SMS and call history and I haven't found anything that could match your story. Effe a delightful and knowledgeable archeologist gave an informative and fun tour of the new and old town. She was actually working as an archeologist on the excavation of the Old town and shared first hand stories with us. Highly recommend this tour it was 2 hours and well worth the 20 euros.

We had a private tour of Monemvasia with Olympic Tours. Our ship docked in Gythion. Our guide picked us up and we drove 1.5 hours to Monemvasia. Our guide was an archeologist and she was so knowledgeable. Niki from Olympic made us a lunch reservation at a great Greek restaurant overlooking the ocean. Beautiful out of the way medieval town. Wonderful day.

We met Effie and hiked up to the old town. She had worked on the archeological dig there and knew EVERYTHING about the place, it's history, ongoing work there, etc. It made our visit so much more interesting. Effie was fun and very knowledgeable. It was a great experience.

I emailed this company to inquire about the €20 tour that’s held once a day. They wrote me back and offered me a very expensive private tour. I replied by explaining that I wasn’t interested in the private tour but then I have never heard back. Has anyone done this tour with others?
