It was a lovely Region but the Hop on Bus was very poorly managed from start to finish. No commentary and overpriced. the manager in charge was extremely rude.
Should of done a private or other tour for the same price

Our cruise ship lobbed into Picton instead of Dunedin! Yes, the dreaded high seas prevented the planned route down the west coast and into the fijords. So very disappointing.
I had done no reading about Picton but was aware it's close to the Marlborough wine region. A free shuttle bus took us from the ship to Picton. There we found an office promoting tours by mini bus. We chose the hop-on-off wine tour bus. At $75 NZ per person it was not cheap. If we'd had longer in port the deal would have offered better value.
We caught the first van at 9:30 am. (There were three vehicles running on the day, with half hours between pickups.) The first driver, Dennis, gave an interesting commentary as we passed from Picton into rural countryside. But he did not inform us the Wine Station at Blenheim would not be able to serve wine until 10 am - so our stop there was wasted.
Our other stops were two wineries and Moa Beeer, where we had a snack lunch. There was just enough time to call into Makana Confections to buy some hand-made chocolates. (I wish we'd been told that tiny tastings at one of the wineries are $10 per person. We would not have chosen to stop at Fromm winery!)
Drivers communicated with each other to make sure all passengers were back to the shuttle bus/ship on time.
It was frustrating not to go to some of the other places on the route. Not the fault of the bus company, of course. We found the map supplied confusing. The route was not clearly marked, and one side was up-side-down to the other, making flipping to get info on the stops difficult. I suggest a new layout be considered with less logos and more clearly marked stops. However times were clearly marked for each stop, which was very helpful.
We enjoyed our day.

We booked a cruise ship tour via I-Site picton, unfortunately a couple of days prior to to departure we had to cancel our cruise. I contacted I-Site to request cancellation of our tour. The Owner of Escape to Marlborough authorised a full refund. Thank you to the tour operators and I-Site picton for the exceptional customer service.

This hop on hop off bus is overpriced. Most of the drivers were lovely but the owner had to drive the bus as she had a staff member sick. She was on her phone constantly running her business and when she wasn't on the phone, we then heard how wonderful she was and what she had achieved in her life! This was a winery hop on hop off bus but there was no relationship with the wineries. We were told of a winery that we could get lunch at but when we got there they were booked out - so was the next place! Couldn't get glass of wine because you had to sit at a table to be able to get a drink! So just waited 1/2 hour to be picked up and onto the next place! In hindsight, I should have hired a car and done our own thing.

Hello Suzanne we are aware you have had contact with Juliearna re your experince. What we didnt like is Juliearna mentioned winning best hotel which is an honor and one all off the staff in the different business have pride in, you feel she should keep this to herself we feel she should shout this achievement from the rooftops.
Men are supported in business by other men, it is a shame when a small percentage of women pride themselfs in tearing down others.. As a female manager i find this awful and really not worth wasting my time on.
As Juliearna said to you it is wonderful to be happy for other females in business you complained all the way though which is a shame, we moved over 100 people this day and 99% loved it as you were already told. Ps you cant hire a car on cruise ship day and the tour is $75.00 a very very good price. You were on the boat so you are aware it is busy. All wineiers try very hard to be accommdating on cruise days and as we have already stated you were the only one to complain. Have a nice day HOHO staff :)

We arrived in Blenheim with plans to bike to wineries, but instead got only heavy rain. We immediately called Escape to Marlborough and got picked up within 30 minutes. Our driver Warren was absolutely amazing and so helpful! We went to 4 wineries, a brewery, and lunch all along their planned route which were great. Warren even offered us a ride to our hotel to keep us out of the rain! I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Marlborough and hope they get Warren as they driver!

I placed a call to “Escape to Marlborough” on the 18th November to enquire about the hop-on-hop-off bus traveling the next day, 19 November. I left a message with a very friendly woman who said that her boss would be back in touch in just a few minutes. Driving in New Zealand often leaves you without mobile phone service, so after more than an hour, I called back to ensure I hadn’t missed that return call.
On this instance, I spoke with a different woman, who I take to be the “boss.” She assured me that I was on a list to be called back, but that all staff were currently in a meeting.
While still polite, it was clear from her tone that the additional call was not welcome. I took that to mean that things were well in-hand, and that I would (in fact) hear from them shortly. By the end of the day I had still not received any returned call, so we made alternative plans for the next day. We’ve enjoyed similar “hop-on-hop-off” wine tours in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, so we were thrilled to find this company. Unfortunately, it was not to be.
I would have been disappointed but entirely understanding had they simply not had seats available, not been able to book for next-day service, or otherwise been unable to take us on the tour. A lack of call-back is just rude or incompetent. Maybe this company just needs a bit more time to mature, or maybe it was a bad day. I do wish them the best, but these are the experiences from which successful operations will learn.

Warren, our driver, was amazing. The stops on the hop on hop off we’re all great. My favorites were Highfield and Villa Maria. But mostly what made the day amazing was Warren. He put up with our stories, helped us schedule out our day and even drove me back to pick up my phone when I left it at another winery. He was great and we had a wonderful day.

The HopOn/HopOff is a pleasant and convenient way for independent travelers to get around Blenheim for a day of tasting in NZ's internationally-acclaimed Marlborough wine region. It's easy to arrange online and moderately priced, including pick-up and return from the Interislander and Blue Bridge ferries/iSite stop at Picton, and it offers an entire day on a continuously running bus route.
We left Picton on the first bus at 9:30 AM and returned on the bus leaving Blenheim for Picton at 4 PM. The ticket cost NZ$69.50 (about US$51) pp/day. Our driver, Warren, was friendly, helpful and accommodating. He clearly enjoys meeting people and makes it a point to recognize his passengers by name when they reboard. We found this service exceptional.
There's a good selection of vineyards on the route, including very large, award-winning producers like Villa Maria and small, family-owned pioneers like the wonderful Allan Scott. As a bonus, there are also stops at the Marlborough Museum with its wine exhibition; at Makana with its delectable hand-made chocolates; and at Sir Peter Jackson's Omaka Aviation Heritage Center, with its incredibly realistic displays of WWI and WWII planes and memorabilia.
It adds up to a glorious day, with no worries about any difficulties of parking, dangers of "driving while tasting," or awkward moments with strangers thrown together for a common purpose, but not always compatible.
If you prefer to travel independently, with only your party and at your pace, this is the way to do it. If you have any questions while booking online, be sure to telephone. The HopOn/HopOff also offers formal tours, especially for groups associated with cruise ships and ferries. If you don't want to find yourself unexpectedly mixed into one of them, and aren't sure how to access the "complete independence!" as advertised, the friendly person at the other end can explain it all to you.
When we booked our independent ticket, it was identified on the emailed voucher as "Hop on Hop off - Wine, Beer, Food & Wonders Tour." We presented this voucher to Warren, our driver, when we boarded at the Picton iSite, and we got wristlets identifying us as paying passengers, so that we could get on and off wherever we wished. We were never part of a formal group, and we got on and off whenever and wherever we chose, based on a printed schedule. As a practical matter, Warren quickly learned who we were and didn't need the wrist tag identifying us as paying passengers.
The fully independent ticket appears to be a relatively new option for the HopOn/HopOff, but from our perspective it seems to be working very well.
Highly recommended.

Can be Interesting being a tourist in your own country as an Aucklander on your own some prejudices come to fruition but the team made me feel welcome and happy to share information. Thanks for a fab day out, buses all ran on time, and staff made sure no one was left stranded. Cheers

We travelled on Ovation of the Seas and had a very different experience to the review below, we were constantly looked after. Juliearna and her team did a fantastic job even if it was very busy. Every time we turned around she was there with a smile and making sure every one was enjoying, the same goes for her partner they couldnt do enough for us. We loved and think is an asset for the area and cheap as chip $69.50 all day. You pay for most tasting but they were $5.00 odd for several wines great value for the day and we had lunch at Cork & Keg brilliant.

Hello At present we are only running full day tours. $245.00 per person. From May onwards this is off season and tours are $195.00 per person. This includes all tastings. The tours are around 5 to 6 hours and you can stop for lunch at a wonderful winery restaurant. ( This is at your own cost) Transport is in a luxury mecedes van.
