This private sculpture park is something very special. The hosts (owners) are very special people and we were lucky enough to have a private tour. The philosophy of letting the artists live on the premises and create their works of art in peace is paying off. I have never seen such diversity anywhere in the world.

Do not miss this incredible place if you are in Auckland area and have even a passing interest in contemporary art. Joy Gow and her husband have spent decades amassing an amazing collection of sculptures, mostly large-scale, that are installed in strategic locations on their property (selected collaboratively by the Gows and the artists). The Gows have also reclaimed/ reforested the previously agricultural land on which the art is placed, over the last 30 years or so. The result is beautiful and often provocative art in a stunningly gorgeous setting. As a guide to the art and property, Joy is, well, an absolute joy. It takes some effort to get here but it's absolutely worth it!

The highlight of our time in Auckland and Waiheke Island.
Jo one of the owners took us around this magnificent sculpture park. Jo shared stories of the many artists represented. She was full of enthusiasm and knowledge. Without a question the highlight of our visit to Waiheke Island and reason enough to go.
If you’ve been to Storm King in NYS, this is even better! Do not miss it!

The peninsula gets thumbs up. The so called sculptures doesn't make sense and we struggle to understand them.

The collection of sculptures at Connells Bay is brilliant. There are plenty to see and the terrain isn't all flat. But you don't even notice that during the trail you're climbing quite high. There are so many wonderful distractions, from the art and also from the natural scenery around the Park. This is a must do on Waiheke, and in Auckland for that matter.
You can add to the delight of the occasion by booking accommodation at their Cottage too.
The art gallery has some wonderful reading material so if you're into learning more about the pieces and art generally allow plenty of time to take it all in.

The owners have done a great job of returning this site to native bush and framing some fantastic art works by New Zealand Artists. Do not be put off by the access in our view this is an absolute must visit and shouldn't be missed. Jo and her husband have obviously made a very major investment in bringing this site to life. We couldn't stop talking about it after we left

There are some truly spectacular people in the world who create something very special and are happy to share it with others. Jo and John Gow’s private sculpture park on Waiheke Island is one such place. Located on the east side of the island, make sure you follow Jo’s specific instructions and look out for the second yellow letterbox as there’s no significant signage.
Before you start the walk around the property, you are invited into the resource room where you get an idea of the inspiration for most of the works you are about to encounter. Don’t forget to use the restrooms before you start as they are a work of art in themselves and I wasn’t sure if it was some elaborate hoax that they were functional and had visions of my ‘encounter’ being recorded in a weird kind of MONA David Walsh kind of way. Fear not, you’re safe.
As you begin the walk starting at Dennis O’Connor’s marble structure with the clever Ballad of Connell’s Bay, you will continue to be surprised and delighted at the various sculptures you are about to encounter. All are cleverly weaved into the fabric of the landscape where the artists are encouraged to find the exact spot where their sculpture should live.
I won’t go into detail on my favourites because you should form your own opinion and go in with an open mind, but Gregor Kregar’s Vanish is impressive and appears to be a modern interpretation of the Terracotta Warriors.
The owners’ collection are all New Zealand artists which I admire and respect. If you are planning to visit, make sure you apply online in advance. The groups are small and intimate and the best $30NZD you will spend on the island.

Definitely one of the best things to do on Waiheke. A lovely grouping of sculptures, installations and even photography in a stunning location. Needs a modest degree of fitness, and allow 1-2 hours ate least to enjoy the art work and the views. The owners have made a significant contribution to the creative arts in this original display. They provide a guide to the walk, but reading in more depth about the sculptures would enhance the experience even more .

Superb park and a gorgeous walk. Great views too. Wear old shoes if it's been wet and take your camera for when you get to the top.

We booked well in advance as places are limited and we had friends who were very keen to see it. It was our fourth visit over about a fifteen year period, but every visit is different. It is a beautiful setting and having Jo, one of the owners, sharing her enthusiasm and giving the background to the works on display adds a great dimension. The planting is now really well-established and a tribute to the huge efforts the owners have made in re-creating a native bush setting. Don't miss this wonderful place.

Would this be a suitable walk if I bring my 88 yo mother who is a slow walker but reasonably steady footed during late February?

Yes...but there are several sections of steps. There is just one section at the end of the walk we would suggest she didn't do but you could accompany her down to the gallery at that stage. Any other questions please email us directly at Connells Bay.

I there would like visit this place on Saturday 17th of December how much would it be for 3 adult and 1 child??.

Hello Moni
Unfortunately we do not have any walks available on Saturday 17 but do have a walk available at 10.30 on Friday 16th. The cost is $30 per adult, $15 for children and under 5 is free.
