Booked 2 connecting rooms and noticed right away that the 2 rooms were in separate cars, had to call and was given a run around about how it wasnt possible to connect the rooms (it is, but they need to be in the same car but the website just books in next available). Because the customer service didnt know how to do this, that should have been my first clue as to what to expect on this trip. Train was on time, which apparently was abnormal. There were so many things broken in the room, bed couldnt be used because the stabilizer bar had broken from the ceiling and never repaired, the room divider wouldnt stay open, so we had to prop bags in between the room so it wouldnt slam open and shut, there was old candy/wrappers in the bed, the garbage door wouldnt stay closed, one closet wouldnt open, the tables were permanently stained, and the one plug is halfway up the wall so its hard to use. One of our rooms had no AC which was awful across a desert. There is an attendant for each car who would never come to help even with the call bell on for hours, there was no coffee station, they ran out of food items on the first day and never replaced them. During meals the staff was rude and yelling at everyone. We would go to meals at our designated time and would be yelled at not to come until called, the announcements would be yelling at you to come right away, then you were given 30min to eat and get out. Every meal was late. You could not walk between trains during stops or meal times or talk in the hallway. But you couldnt use the viewing car because it was on the other side of the dining car which we were not allowed to walk through during meal times and if you did get to the observation car, coach members were sleeping on the tables. When i went to get ice for my medication i was yelled at to ask my attendant, when i explained i didnt mind getting it myself since my attendant hadnt showed up, they refused to let me pass. The attendant never showed and i had to sneak the ice bucket under my shirt to the cafe. I felt like i was trapped and confined to my room the whole ride. How was i paying more than a flight and hotel room to be treated like that? Awful experience that i would never recommend to anyone. I have travelled in Europe several times and always had an enjoyable time, this is not the same.

Took the train from Sacramento to Chicago, through Reno, Salt Lake City, Denver and Lincoln.

Amazing scenery, the train goes in places where there are no roads. Just awesome !!

Staff were very good, the food was much better than I expected.

Get a bedroom, the space meakes it more relaxing !

We were on time or early at every stop.

This was a bucket list trip that exceeded all my expectations. I’m an 82 year old solo traveler and trip was a sheer joy. The boarding process at Chicago’s Union Station was flawless. I had a roomette sleeper compartment which was very comfortable for 1 person - a 2nd passenger sleeping in a pull down bunk would have been pretty crowded. I was in car 540 and my room was directly across the hall from the very adequate bathroom / shower room shared by that car’s passengers. The staff on board were excellent, attentive, and helpful. The three meals a day included in the fare were not gourmet but certainly reasonable but the pleasure of the eating experience is meeting different people at each meal. Breakfast was the best food, lunch was always crowded and slow (I skipped lunch and bought a very reasonably priced sandwich in the observation car cafe and ate at a table in the observation car while enjoying the scenery both days). Dinner with a 5 entree choice menu was good / not great but nicely served. The two dining car attendants were very professional and attentive.
The beauty and value of the experience is certainly the scenery. The first day out of Chicago to Omaha is through the mile after mile of corn and wheat fields exhibiting the vast extent of America’s agricultural heartland. The 2nd day starting early in Denver and ending in Salt Lake City crosses the Rocky Mountains in spectacular fashion and spends a couple hours following the beautiful Colorado river. The 3rd day’s highlight is the trip up and over the Sierra Nevada mountain range passing through the area of Donner Pass with a beautiful view of the mountain top Donner Lake.
The trip ends in Emeryville California across the bay from San Francisco where a very efficient transfer to a bus takes you to a drop off point in downtown San Francisco at Salesforce Tower. By the way we arrived in Emeryville 10 minutes ahead of schedule after of trip of 52 3/4 hours and over 2,400 miles.

All in all a fantastic and enjoyable experience. I have traveled on the Indian Pacific train across Australia and the Rovos Rail train from Pretoria to Cape Town, South Africa. The Zephyr is very comparable and stands up well in comparison.

This is our second trip on the train. The first was 30 years ago and was memorable. This trip also hasn't disappointed us. Although we ended the first trip in Denver, this trip all the way to Chicago. Food has been great, sleeper car with full room small. Almost like being in a cabin in 20 foot sail boat. Tight, but Manageable . Don't bring large suitcases. We carried 4 pieces and backpacks for a 3 week trip. It took a bit of shuffling things around to make comfortable spaces. Beds are flat and firm, top is narrower and bottom like a full size bed. Great views East bound. Our return trip will be the southern route.

We booked a family cabin as part our West Coast tour. The cabin steward kept the room and bathroom very clean, and was very entertaining. Although there is a lot of movement, we did manage to sleep two nights on the trip from Chicago to Emeryville (San Francisco). The food in the dining car is excellent, especially the flatiron steak. A full breakfast and lunch are served. There is also a viewing car: we sat there when the train was following the Colorado River and climbing the Rockies.

We took this train with our bikes to and from Chicago for a weekend visit. Left from Mt. Pleasant Iowa station. Super easy to check bikes on with helpful staff on both ends. Sat in the observation car as much as possible. Very mellow ride and made getting into/out of downtown Chicago pretty painless. Took advantage of the bar on the ride home. Super friendly servers and maybe too easy to get drinks. Luckily this bar closed at Galesburg IL so we were saved from ourselves. I would do this again anytime.

Un voyage mythique réalisé en train qui traverse 7 Etats de Chicago à San Francisco sur près de 4000 kms en environ 52h dont 2 nuits à bord. Départ à 2pm d'Union Station après avoir été invité à se présenter à l'embarquement. 3 types de classes, la basique Coach grands sièges bien espacés, la Roomette un peu exiguë et la Bedroom la plus confortable. La restauration est incluse ainsi que l'assistance d'un steward pour ces 2 dernières classes. Le début du voyage présente peu d'intérêt avec des paysages de plaines (culture de céréales) si ce n'est le passage sur le Mississipi environ 3h après le départ. Les choses sérieuses commencent le lendemain matin après Denver quand le C.Z. attaque la montagne en sepentant il convient alors d'assister à ce spectacle depuis la voiture panoramique. Une fois dans les montagnes rocheuses on suit le fleuve Colorado puis les canyons de l'Utah. Viendra ensuite le désert du Nevada avant d'apercevoir plus tard la baie de SF. Une fois arrivés à Emeryville (à l'heure !) un bus nous emmènera en centre-ville de SF. Un voyage de paysages différents et époustouflants sur la route des pionniers et chercheurs d'or où seul passe le train en de nombreux endroits. Des rencontres que favorisent les repas pris dans la voiture-restaurant et des souvenirs plein la tête. Un grand merci à notre sympathique assistant Mike;

I had the pleasure of traveling on Trains 5/6 on July 4th and 7th to/from Grand Junction and Denver. Conductors Cody and Nick truly exceeded my expectations with their exceptional customer service and professionalism. They went above and beyond to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable journey for all passengers. Their dedication to their work and their customers is truly commendable. High recognition of their outstanding service and commitment to excellence.

Several years ago I started a tradition to take each of my grandchildren, one at a time, on an Amtrak overnight adventure when they were about 12 years old. I’ve taken one from Chicago to Boston, two from St. Louis to Dallas, and this year I took my grandson from Chicago to Denver. All of the trips have been great, but I think this one was the best so far.
The goal wasn’t about the destination, but about the train trip itself. It didn’t work the first year, but I tried to find a destination where we could travel to, and then later on the same day, get on a train to return home. The staff at Union Station in Chicago were all very helpful, answering my questions and showing us where we should wait. Since I am a senior, we had a special room to wait in (for seniors, families with small children and handicapped.) The kind gentleman who worked there made sure we had a ride with a Red Cap to the train. We had coach seats on the upper floor. The train departed on time as scheduled. There was plenty of room for us to spend overnight on the train. The seats recline and the leg rests pop up. We brought food, drinks and snacks to eat. There is plenty of overhead storage. The staff was very courteous. My grandson enjoyed visiting the observation car for part of the trip. We arrived about an hour late, due to rerouting in some areas for flooding. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast in the station at Snooze Eatery.
The Denver Union Station is currently being remodeled. I asked a security guard to direct me to the information desk. He said they didn’t currently have one. I was looking for a place to store our luggage for the day. He directed me to a white van across the street, Lugden, where we met a nice young man who stored our small luggage for $10 each, for the day. The security guard assured me that the van storage service had been there for a long time and was safe.
The security guard also told us about a free bus service in Denver called the Free Mallride. We could catch a bus across from the station which went up and down 15th and 17th street to the Civic Center, stopping every block for people to get on and off. We could ride 30 minutes back and forth and see much of Denver, including the capitol building, without having to walk. We then did take a walk to Cherry Creek, where my grandson could wade in the water. We had a delicious lunch at Menya Ramen Restaurant, walked to Coors Field, and found another free city bus near there for a different 30 minute ride.
We traveled back to Chicago in a roomette. Due to flooding west of Denver, the train was about two hours late getting to Denver from California, so we departed about 9pm. Since meals are included with a roomette or any sleeper room, the porter told us to drop off our luggage in our room and go straight to the dining car. We were served a delicious meal. My grandson ordered the steak dinner and I ordered salmon. Both were very good, and the experience of eating in the nice dining room, while riding on the train was awesome!
When we went back to our room, our porter, Rashid Davis, had turned our seats into a sleeping area, with a twin size bed for me and a bunk above for my grandson. The lower level of the sleeper car has a shower available so I took advantage of that. Rashid kept it stocked with towels.
My grandson and I both had a great night’s sleep. I slept straight through till morning and had to wake him to go to breakfast, which again was included in the price of the room and was delicious. The food on the California Zephyr is made fresh by the train chef in the kitchen below, not just reheated food. Our food server was Reesey Dogan. She was delightful and efficient.
Rashid turned our room back to two seats facing each other while we were at breakfast. He had fresh coffee ready down the hall in our car when I woke up (available most of the day) and was attentive to our needs.
We both enjoyed the Angus burger for lunch. The train was a couple hours late getting back to the station, again due to flooding in several different areas along the way, but we had a very comfortable trip, enjoying every minute of it. When we got to the station, Rashid again took care of us, getting a Red Cap to drive us with our luggage to the station and near the outside exit. It is quite a walk from where the train stops to getting outside to catch a ride, so that was much appreciated.
Since I’ve traveled like this before, I’ve learned a few things to bring for the trip. I’ve mentioned food and drinks. I bring a small soft cooler/lunch box that I can fold and pack in my suitcase on the trip home. There is a food cafe on the train, and you can pay to eat in the dining room.
There are two outlets by the coach seats, but only one in the roomette, so I bring an adapter and extension cord that can reach to the top bunk. We had neck pillows and a small blanket for sleeping in the coach seats. Bring headphones if you want to listen to anything on your electronic devices. Be sure to bring your chargers. Also, it is nice to tip the porter, food server, and red cap driver, so bring some cash.

This is tough to write - because I've ridden short Amtrak rides (a lot between DC/NY) and we were so excited to go from Sac. to Den... We booked two roomettes at over $2400...Here's the good, bad and Ugly (well just the pros and cons)

Cons:
* The roomettes are very cramped and fairly uncomfortable for anything other than a day trip. I like a very firm mattress, but these beds were incredibly hard to get any sleep on.
* The train itself is VERY dilapidated and in needs of updates/upgrades/refresh/deep clean.
* The sleeping carts - where we were had terrible sewage smells.
* The trains are dirty - the carpets, rails, walls, windows, seats (its dirty)
* The food - which is included is mediocre at best (but we really did not go because of that).
* The bathrooms (which are shared with other roomettes) are extremely small, dirty and in desperate need of refresh).
* HOT - our room was very hot - we turned the dial all the way to cold but there was barely any air coming out. The hallway was very pleasant so if we opened/left our door and curtain open the room was fine, but did not want to do that over night.
* The value - at $2400 for the two rooms, we felt this was extremely over priced.

Pros:
* The views
* The views
* The views
* Yes the views are really great. I literally spent the entire time looking out and do really love train travel - you don't get the same experience from driving (you have to pay attention to the road and traffic). It was really nice to be able to relax and enjoy this beautiful country.
* The service - Everyone who helped us to the nice lady who drove us in a golf cart to the tracks and our spot to the dining car attendants to our shared FC attendant to the lead conductor (Dan) was above and beyond. So helpful, so nice and so accommodating.

Net-Net:

If you dont mind cramped spaces and dirty surroundings, its an incredible way to see this beautiful country. Would I do it again? Not overnight and not any time soon. If there was a decent day trip out of Denver where I could then fly somewhere, I would consider.
