Peaks Island is gorgeous!! We loved the sunrises, the gigantic rocks, the tides rolling in and out and the gorgeous weather. I would definitely go again. Plus the seafood was delicious:)

Enjoyed being on the ferry to see shoreline perspectives. Brought our bikes with us to bike the loop around the island was wonderful with lots of stops to walk on the rocks and get close to the surf. Nice partial-daytrip.

A good one-day excursion by bike, on foot, or by renting a golf cart. You can circumnavigate the island in an hour with a bike or golf cart. If you want some R&R or reading time, stay the night. There are 4-5 choices of eateries, with a few probably requiring reservations (or waits) in high season. After Labor Day, you can probably wing it. All of the eateries face Portland. If you want to eat or picnic facing the ocean, I recommend packing a lunch or picking up sandwiches. A local market makes sandwiches and has anything else you might need such as chips, drinks, healthy snacks, etc. And you can get a treat at a couple of local cafes. Do visit the umbrella cover museum. Do wander around some side streets. Do check out any local artists.
There are plenty of places to stop and either sit on stone benches or rocks to enjoy your food.
If you are a bit more adventurous, there are some short hiking trails, though they can be difficult to find and not well marked. There is a WW II era lookout, though well grown over, still accessible. Also, the 8th Maine Regiment lodge is worth a look, plus a nearby museum dedicated to sundry other local history. Both have a Maine sort of charm.
There are plenty of places to stop and either sit on stone benches or rocks to enjoy your food.

Beautiful Island to visit for 1/2 excursion. I would highly recommend a guided golf cart tour. Its a 15 minute ferry ride to the Island. Its the only way off and on to the Island.

I love the reviews that say, "There's little to do on Peaks." That's the whole idea.
When you go to Peaks, check the CBL ferry schedule online first. pick a boat, then plan accordingly, arriving early. If you're late, you wait for the next boat. If you're on time, you can relax.
Dress right, staring with sneakers, bring a coat, a lunch. drinks, and your bike. Park your car in a nearby lot or garage, then bike to the ferry terminal, get tickets and wait for the boat. When it arrives, it lets the cars off first, then the people; then they load cars, then islanders, and then visitors.
If you bring a bike, park it where they say, and you may want to stay with it for the trip. If not, go up top on the boat if you can. It's cool and breezy there, so you may need your coat. You can also find a spot in the lee, out of the wind, on the second deck in back, and places on the first deck. There's always inside, too, where it's warm.
If you didn't bring a bike if you can rent one from Wyatt off the boat, up the hill, to the left 100 yds. Don't get a golf cart - it's easier but way more expensive, and you miss a lot that you'd see by bike. If you didn't bring a lunch and drink, you can buy them at Hannigan's, but you'll have to wait.
Then bike the perimeter of the island, getting off and exploring beaches and rocks when the mood strikes. The houses are varied, flowers are amazing, and backshore Peaks is spectacular - a miracle of nature. Find a comfortable rock-chair, or sit in one of the benches, eat your lunch, and watch the breakers roll in from France. Get some perspective on your life.
You can continue around the perimeter and end up where you started, or you can go exploring the interior of the island on one of the many trails. You could have gotten a guided bike tour for $135, but you're doing it yourself for $15. You can't be lost for long on a 1-mile square island.
Visit the 5th Maine and the 8th Maine regiments, the Gem art shop. If Nancy 3 is in the Umbrella Cover Museum, you must go.
If you're still hungry, go to the Gull on the deck (best restaurant on Peaks). The Inn has great beer and pub food. PI Lobster has the best lobster rolls, and a great deck overlooking the bay. Jones Landing has good food, drink and music, and the Greek of Peaks (my fave) is up the hill. Her lamb-burgers are to die for.
The ice cream store is at the corner, so grab a cone and some Peaks shwag, and watch the sun set as the ferry docks. After the cars and people unload, saunter down onto the ferry (no ticket needed) for the ride back to town. You know the drill. Enjoy the view, the company, and the bracing sea air.

Peaks Island is worth exploring if you take a golf cart tour (75 minutes) and learn about the history of the island which is quite fascinating. At one time the island had more than 15 hotels, 3 bowling alleys, movie theater, dance hall and ferries ran 24 hours. Now there isn't a single hotel and service is very limited to a few restaurants.
To get here, take the ferry from Casco Bay, downtown Portland (be sure to have lunch on the pier when done, so many fun seafood shacks to enjoy). Ferry ride is only 17 minutes and about $7 RT. Departs on the hour except at lunch time which is disappointing because if you are on the island, departures are 12:45PM and then 2:45PM. Once your tour is done, not much left to do.

Ono of the worst excursions I ever had , absolutely nothing to do . We were cursed out by the locals for being day trippers , absolutely nothing to see or do,do not waste your time

We love how quiet this island is. We visited the Boyd art gallery, walked around, got a few cocktails, and took in the beautiful views. The autumn day felt much more like Indian Summer and was perfect.

We started out with a ferry ride to the island. We spent a lot of time walking the beaches and searching for sea glass. We even found a few pieces. We had the best sandwiches at the little store and made a picnic of it. The chicken salad was a huge hit! The views were spectacular!

Beautiful island . Highly recommend renting a bike for an hour to see the island . Stunning . It is important to see the less developed parts of the island . Terrific lobster roll and sat outside with views of the bay .

Can you tell me more about using golf carts on the island? . We aren’t bike riders. Is it fun to get around on the carts? How long do you spend out there?

Lots of people had carts and they all looked like they were having fun. I think the carts were 25 an hour, which is enough time to see everything.

I do not remember seeing an inn on Peaks Island. We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Portland. The location is downtown and is a few blocks from the Pier.

It will be a little chilly, especially in the morning and evening - bring warm clothes! If you're lucky we'll have a slow fall foliage season into October. Ferries will still be running as normal.
