While in Maryland, Tony and I went to this lovely C&O Canal Park in Hancock Maryland. The park is lovely. The stroll along the Potomac River was extremely beautiful. We had the very best weather during our trip.
The Historical Bowles House is the actual C&O Visitors Center but it was closed.
Definitely recommend and definitely going back again. It was all free to check out, explore and enjoy!!! Private parking lot.

Very nice walk along the path. Not from the area so had no idea what to expect. Enough people around so felt safe. Very shady and the path is wide and easy to walk on. Great history!

The C&O Canal historic park starts in Georgetown in the District of Columbia stretches up into Maryland (northward) for over 180 miles. The canal system was built to transport coal and other crops to Washington D.C. and operated from 1831 to 1924. The best segment to visit is (in my opinion) is where the Great Falls, Maryland side is located. This spot provide great bike and walking trail. The Billy Goat Trail on Bear Island, and Olmsted Island are accessible from this park. Visitors can view the Falls from overlook points on Olmsted island. There are operational locks to view. The Old Tavern Inn (historic inn) is now the information center and museum. Great place to be all year round.

Have visited the park on multiple occasions and it's always an enjoyable day. While the public facilities are a little better at Great Falls park on the other side of the river, the C&O has the historical aspect with the old tavern and the canal tow path. It does have an overlook where one can view the falls, but on this visit it was closed for repairs. There are also a few different walking trails, none of which is terribly long. Also, I've never had to wait to get into the park, as frequently happens at Great Falls park.

The C&O Canal Historic Park is one of many access points to the tow path, a strip of natural serenity running north From Georgetown in DC for 184 miles. I choose to venture along the path early in the morning to avoid the crowds that congregate at Great Falls in Maryland.
I ride the bike path at least monthly and love the history and nature that are the tow path / park.

We had a great walk in C & O canal park this morning. Very good approach, ample parking, superb access areas for watching great falls and great walking track for walking, jogging, cycling etc.

I've been to other locations on the canal, and this one is very good. We did visit during a pretty heavy round of thunderstorms, but that even made it more unique. The views around are fantastic, the trails for hiking and biking are wonderful and the museum provides a lot of insight that isn't around at the other sites further out. We even got a lesson from a volunteer on C&O Canal money and the history. Now I know what the "two bits" is from in "Shave and a Hair Cut - Two Bits" from the volunteer. The park service should do something to keep the rain from coming in the museum....they had to sand bag it because it was designed to force water toward the building, not away. Definitely would like to return.

I had visited Great Falls Park in June with my mom. While on our multi-national park tour, my boyfriend and I decided to stop there and add the Maryland side to our trip as well. This park did not disappoint! You get a different viewpoint of the falls, and if you're there on the right day, you can even take a ride on a canal boat. We even got to witness some kayakers going over the falls. This is a very nice park.

Have biked the entire 184 Mile Trail several times as well as other trails in the East Coast. The canal is by far my favorite. The scenery is outstanding and the amount of wildlife you see is unbelievable. DC AND Cumberland and the other towns on the canal are very bike friendly. Bike a section or the whole thing you won't be disappointed.
