As a native of Oklahoma I have heard many stories of how the Native American people were treated by the Government that promised to protect them but it wasn't until I visited Washita that the truth of that reality was brought to life. Words cannot express the horror of that day in 1868 but the serenity of this site is breathtaking. It is more than worth the stop to visit.

It's off the beaten path but the road trip is nice. It is a National Park Service site and so it is well done. It is a small museum with a 20 minute historical film that covers what happened here between the Native Americans and the US Army. Just one more tidbit of American History that was not taught in school, or that I remember anyway. The park ranger was helpful and shared information about the some of the displays. Glad I took the time to visit.

Be sure and make the effort to stop here. The video explained why this site is part of United States history. I learned quite a few facts. The rangers were so helpful. The exhibits were incredible!!!

The 30 minute film is a very well done explanation of what occurred. This was a very dark day for the US Calvary. This is just another instance in which Custer, in all his arrogance and ill will, happily participated in. One more reason to despise this evil person. The Park Ranger was friendly and helpful. The store has many area history books

I’ve seen this thing on a map for years and finally took a side quest when coming back from Amarillo. Call ahead and arrange for a tour for the best experience. The ranger had lots of interesting information that you could visualize while on site. My teenage kids even gave it a thumbs up. A great way to spend a couple of hours outdoors learning about history.

This small NPS site preserves a fraction of the area where Custer attacked Black Kettle's village in November 1868. The museum/visitor center, though small, is very well done and the orientation film is excellent. If you view both, you will have everything you need to know to understand what happened, why, and what makes it significant.

The actual historic site is a short drive away. This could be done better and, frankly, is a bit of a disappointment. There is literally nothing to suggest site specific history on the site, save for a small rise that they believe provided Custer's vantage point. The river (all I saw was a trickle of a small creek) has changed its course since the battle and they confess they don't even know where the village was located. Views are expansive and if better explained, could provide visitors with a good feel for the scale of the event and the orientation of the attackers. They rely not on helpful wayside exhibits but a very superficial cell phone tour that provides almost no information that is not covered int the excellent visitor center. The trail itself is a mix of pavement and grass/dirt and is fairly easy to walk. If anyone in charge of the site reads this, please provide some sort of trail map to guide visitors at their one decision point on the trail. Visitors reach a trail junction with a sign that points to the "upper trail" and the 'lower trail" with no explanation as to which way to go. It turns out that the upper trail simply bypasses the area along the river and half a dozen of the cell phone stops, so if you are interested in walking the entire trail, opt for the lower trail, which then merges back into the upper trail that leads back to the trailhead.

Despite these disappointments, this is a site well-worth visiting if you have any interest in this aspect of American history. The interpretation is reasonably balanced (no pro-Indian or pro-Custer bias blatantly evident) and provides a lesson about how two sides can view the same event through entirely different lenses.

I had limited time but found the museum very informative and interesting, well done with exhibits and explanations. The gift shop was small but certainly offered nice selection if you wanted a memory of your stop. The young ranger was super nice and friendly, made the visit very pleasant.

It was super windy and hot when I went to the battlefield site and I only walked a short distance down the trail. Since I was alone I thought it best to not venture very far. It was a highly emotional stop for me thinking of what had taken place on the site. The covered shelter at the beginning of the trail was a nice place to sit and reflect.

I plan a return trip when the weather has cooled some. The trail is a sidewalk (or the one I was on was), offering an audio tour accessed through a cell #. The foliage was not overgrowing the walkway, a plus in the summer.

A definite do-over for me.

If you go in the summer bring much water as it gets hot. The trails are wonderful but get a bit steep. The audio tour helps guide you through this event. Sad what our Native American brothers and sisters suffered

It's a beautiful area, but the museum doesn't contain much to see. The gift shop is half the size of the museum space. The best part of it is outside. It's gorgeous once you leave the building. Don't go when it's raining, or it will be a very quick trip.

This is a small site with free admission. If you are interested in American Indian wars of the 1800s this is a must see. The rangers at the visitor center were very informative. Be sure to watch the 20 minute movie before taking the self guided 1.5 mile easy hike around the winter campground of Black Kettle and the Cheyenne-Arapahoe Indians.
