great park, lots of trees, and close to sunset Beach.
this park is great in the summer as it is very cool, in colder months you want to have an open space to get sunshine.

This place is always wonderful. The tide this weekend was really high which made for a smaller beach area. The weather was spotty with showers but the bay is still wonderful. Highly recommend!

We have stayed at dozens of state parks. This one is by far the most disappointing. It is a dark and dreary campground with extremely filthy washrooms. The showers close at 7pm (3 hours earlier than most other parks). I had a sharp knock on the door of the shower at 655 and when I said I would be right out I was told “good. I’m locking it in 5 minutes” by what appeared to be a younger park attendant. When I said they closed earlier than any park Ide ever been in he said “so we can leave earlier”. The road into the park is littered with bags and bags of trash. The beach is a solid 5 min walk and probably the only redeeming feature in this area (besides chucks seafood!) also.:no cell service in this campground if you need it. Ide avoid this part of the coast or look at another state park close by…lots to choose from!

My husband and I found Sunset Bay State Park while looking for a place to see the sunset on a drive down the coast. We realized we wouldn't make our next stopping point in time, so we turned west looking for a spot and, after unsuccesfully heading toward a lighthouse and an overlook, we found this place. It most definitely lives up to its name! It's a quiet, peaceful place to take in a beautiful west coast sunset. I would definitely reocommend it if you're in the area!

This beach is protected by outlays g rocks so has a gentle tide. Perfect beach for older kids that want to play in the water. Shallow so they can walk out and catch the waves. Nice sand for sand castle building. Not much wind the day we were there so just about perfect. Interesting rock formations and tide pools to explore. There ere kayakers in the bay and a young surfer something for everyone. Picnic tables available to the south. Restrooms were clean. Great spot

We wanted a cool, quiet, serene campground near the beach and found it here at Sunset Bay SP.
Located in walking distance to two other Oregon State Parks - Cape Arago SP and Shore Acres SP - Sunset Bay SP contains the campground for the three parks, the other two parks being designated for day use only.
Whether you walk the approximate mile to either of the other two parks or drive it, you'll pass through lush verdant flora and might happen upon fauna as well. We caught young deer feeding right out in the open at Shore Acres SP and even saw one on the trail leading down to the shore's edge. The barks of sea lions or seals carry up the cliffs to the overlook at Cape Arago SP and they can be seen basking on Simpsons Reef just offshore at the North Cove overlook there. And our campsite was visited by squirrels and birds making themselves at home - as they should - while we camped in theirs.
Sunset Bay SP is close to Coos Bay for resupply trips with firewood available right in the campground from the friendly park hosts.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will go back at a later date to see the many things there are to see in the area that we didn't have enough time to see on this trip.
We found the people in Coos Bay to be warm and inviting and we thank them for the hospitality we enjoyed on our too-brief trip.

It's a bit windy, sometimes rainy and chilly but so very very beautiful. Especially at sunset. The sunset is extra long because thee sun sets behind an island.

Another beautiful Oregon State Park. We saw at least 10 park volunteer's cleaning the park at various times of the day. The bathrooms were spotless with endless hot water in the FREE showers. Great location within a mile of Shore Acres Botanical Gardens, Simpson's Reef where we saw hundreds of seals and a couple of Bald Eagles parched on Simpson's Island. We hiked down to Simpson Beach and we were one of the only people on the beach. Very private and nice white sand. Can't wait to be able to come back in the Summer and enjoy relaxing on the beach. #

This is by far one of my favorite Oregon state parks. This park is truly the best park for viewing the ocean, hiking, bike riding, camping, and any other recreational adventure you would like to do.
I have never seen a park so set up for bike riders. There is a place where you can put a padlock to store your gear. Another locked venue to charge your laptop, iPad, or phone.
Sites include water, electric and sewer for $30 per night. Sites are paved and large and some afford a bit of privacy. Bath and shower rooms are nice and clean. No quarters needed for the shower.
Wood can be purchased for five dollars a bundle which is typical at Oregon state parks. Fire rings and picnic tables are at each site.
What’s sets this park ahead of many others is that the hiking trails are phenomenal. They are well-maintained and take you to some of the most beautiful views of the Oregon ocean that I have ever experienced. The 3 mile hike takes you to some views of the ocean that you cannot see from any Road. I highly encourage you to experience this hike.
From the park you can take a trail with a tunnel that goes under the road so you can safely reach the beach area. Be sure to take your camera or phone to take a lot of photos every view is a picture taking moment.
If you’re not a camper you can also pay a day fee and experience the park.

The campground was nice and the bathrooms/showers were good. The highlight, of course, was a short drive or walk to the beach to watch the sunset. The beach closed at dusk, so the day use people and the campers gather for sunset and then disperse. We had excellent clear skies with a light ocean haze, and even got to see the green flash! The bathrooms at the beach were not so nice.

It is monitored daily and by region. Not by year or statewide. Please contact the park or the general state parks info line for specific information. I would list the info for you but the site won’t allow it. Thank you for your concern about fire safety!!

All Oregon State Park deluxe and rustic yurts/cabins are said to have a heater per their website. It’s been my experience that there is one (sometimes two) but can not speak to this park specifically. Hope you go!

what hotels or inns are there near this park

Sorry to take so long, but there are no hotels or inns in Sunset Bay State Park. It is strictly for camping. If you want to stay in the are you either look in Bandon or Coos Bay. Bandon is a cuter town, whereas Coos Bay is an old logging/fishing town and more blue collar.

Yup. Depends on your carrier, but there are a couple that seem to get decent reception.
