This is a great route to include if you're heading from southern Washington to Boise, and you want something more interesting than I-84. Take Oregon 204 from Walla Walla to Elgin where you meet up with the official byway. Follow the byway (Oregon 82) through Wallowa, Enterprise, and Joseph...all three quaint little towns with history to spare and few tourists. A few miles past Joseph, a hairpin turn leads to the Wallowa Mountain Loop Road (Oregon 39), which is a fairly good quality road that winds up into the Hell's Canyon Recreation Area. Watch out for the pot holes on this road. After about 30 miles, start to look for the signs to the Hell's Canyon Overlook road that leads up to a wonderful overlook complete with signage, restrooms, short trails, parking lot, and picnic tables...and a wonderful long-distance view of the Hell's Canyon area. (Note: You cannot see the Snake River or the gorge from here, but it is a very nice place to have a picnic and enjoy the amazing views.) Once you're satisfied, head back down to 39 and continue down to where it meets Oregon 86. At this point, you can turn right and follow the byway to Baker City, however, we turned left and headed over to Oxbow, the Snake River, and the great views of Hell's Canyon from the bottom up...nice! We then turned south and headed to Boise through Cambridge, ID.
This is a very beautiful drive and I definitely recommend it, but I would note that is is probably not as spectacular as you might think. Everyone mentions the canyon being deeper than the grand canyon, but this is NOT what you see.

We were there on 3/31 and half of the loop was closed due to snow! We didn't discover this until we got to the road closed sign. However, on our way, we had a "Yellowstone" moment but with cows in the roadway instead of bison. Cowboys were moving their cows from one area to another and part of the way was down the road. We didn't mind at all, since we got to see several little baby cows up close & personal.
We thought we were taking the dirt road out of Imnaha to the overlook, but boy were we wrong. We probably drove 25+ miles on a curvy, rocky, twisting dirt road until we came to a gate. Thankfully we turned around at that point. On our way back we ran into a Fish & Game employee who told us that was private property beyond the gate! We did get to see some sights of the canyon the most people probably don't get to see though. Definitely was an adventure!!

We drove out to Oregon from Massachusetts to take the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway. Its a full day drive through a wide variety of areas - desert, forest, grasslands, mountains. The overlook is well worth visiting. Great vistas of the canyon, deeper than the Grand Canyon. If you go there, just keep driving until you get to the end. There is a turn-out on the way -- that isn't the overlook. Look for the National Forest sign to say you are there and the parking lot.
The dam area is also cool, though the park office there is closed due to Covid. We did talk to one of the rangers who happened to be there and shared a map with us.
We didn't intend to go to the dam. It was a mistake. I planned out the day to be able to arrive back at our hotel by 9pm. But the 2 hour sidetrip to the dam delayed our arrival at the hoitel until almost midnight.
This brings up the major issue with the Byway - signage. There are signs here and there. But it is not well-marked. EVERY INTERSECTION should have a sign pointing out the Byway. But only some do. And some are not prominent. And you might not even know if you are still even on the byway because the signs are so far apart.
So I advise you to use your GPS and keep plugging in the next town in your sequence, like Enterprise, to avoid going to the dam by mistake (not that the view from the dam isn't great -- it is!) Cell coverage in the canyon is sparse, though I could get a signal from the overlook.

While staying at the Belle Pepper's B&B in Joseph (reviewed by me separately) our hosts recommended the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway, especially the Hells Canyon Overlook.
We usually make a point of going by the local's recommendations, so off we went.
We started our drive through the Wallowa Whitman National Forest, which is beautiful in itself. We used forest Road Number 39.
The Hells Canyon Overlook is signed (Small sign, by the way.....) and it takes you up a narrow winding road to the magnificent lookout, which has toilets, nice benches and tables for picnics, little trails and stunning views of Hells Canyon, which is reportedly deeper than the Grand Canyon (!!!). It is very different in its geology from the Grand Canyon but it is definitely very impressive.
From the lookout we descended into the Snake River gorge with its dams and lakes, which were also worth the visit.
All in all, a great half day trip!! Well worth it!! Be sure to visit the Hells Canyon Overlook!!!!!

The drive up is long, twisty, and totally worth it. The view is exceptional. There's also an abundance of wildlife to view coming and going. A wonderful afternoon sightseeing trip

There is no way to find the words or adjectives to describe this area of Oregon. Hells Canyon is the deepest canyon in the US. This scenic byway is now my favorite scenic byway in Oregon.
Lots of pull outs to take photo's and stops for viewing.
I have seen several canyons but this one out shines them all. It is one of Oregon's best kept secrets.
Tourists on the byway were patient and there is no need to go at any speed. Take your time and enjoy the picture taking opportunities.

What a wonderful day drive. Up and Down the Snake river, Past multiple dams, no-one on the road. What a fantastic day. Make sure to stop at some of the historical sites and read about our history.

We didn't think we could drive down to the bottom of the canyon, by the river. And it wasn't easy. But it was certainly worth the exploration. What an adventure. We can understand why Evil Kneivel wanted to jump this canyon, way back when. It's a good Bucket List trip.
