Beautiful trip for families. Great areas for tons of photo ops. Would highly recommend if in area. Only drawback were the older restroom primitive toilets. Members of Congress or Senate in area need to get upgrade money for restrooms and a welcome center.

Gifford Pinchot National Forest driving from Randal WA to Trout lake Is very poorly marked and difficult to try verse in anything other than 4 Wheel Dr.

Avoid at all cost

Hubby and I decided to take hwy 12 starting at i5 all the way through the Gifford Pinchot National Forest through to Eastern WA and then loop around to the Columbia River. What an awesome day trip! We saw an elk herd from hwy 12 not too far past Mayfield... but as we passed through the National Forest, we were excited to see how many little local shops there were to stop at along this vast wild part of WA. White Pass ski resort was popping off, with many people looking like they were enjoying the sunny day. It’ll be fun to hear up and go snowboarding there and really enjoy what White Pass has to offer. The views were so beautiful, lots of snow around still, but nothing that required chains. Then we hit Clear Lake! It was frozen solid over top, and such an amazing site to see! A few resort options along the way overlooking this impressive lake, with the Tieton Dam at the end. So happy we spent the morning driving through this way, heading East into Yakima. Once we passed Clear Lake, and got out of the mountain pass, the terrain changes and in almost feels like you’re in a different state. Fun drive and one I highly recommend!

Not sure why the Falls does not have it's own attraction listing.
The falls have been greatly improved very recently with a nicely marked and nearly level trail all the way down to the base of the falls now. There is a wooden deck viewing area at the top and at the bottom of these falls.
Once of the best waterfalls in the entire Gorge area yet gets hardly any visitors due to its remote location in the middle of the national forest.
Parking area for a few cars and a beautiful cascading mossy waterfall.
Unfortunately someone died with the previous natural trail so glad the authorities stepped in and made an official trail and it is one all ages can go on (at least to the viewing area at the bottom)
Clear signage indicates going off of the bottom viewing area is unsafe and could be deadly. I am convinced many will not head those warnings though.

Driving Tip: to reach the falls, ignore Waze instructions and just take Panther Creek Rd which is NF-65 to the Falls Trailhead Parking area. It leads you right there. Waze took me on a roundabout way on other roads in much worse road conditions and far longer, as if Panther Creek Rd. was closed at one section but it never was.

Drove through Gifford Pinchot Forest and loved it. I did not encounter the horrible road conditions that other reviews mentioned. The scenery was beautiful with lots of pull offs for photo ops. We even found a short trail to waterfall right off the road. We would definitely return.

There are a lot of well-maintained camp grounds and plenty of trails to check out. Goose lake is very nice for kayaking, great spot for hackleberry picking.

We did not spend a lot of time in Gifford Pinchot National Forest as our ultimate destination was Mount Ranier, but we felt like a National Forest was worthy of our time especially since it is one of the oldest in the country. Lots or trees, that are lush and green and above all beautiful. A tranquil place to appreciate nature.

Some may say that GPNF is too primitive or underdeveloped. Not me...it reminds me of the old days when I was a kid.

A significant portion of south-central Washington State is taken up by the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. It borders the Columbia River and the Oregon/Washington State Line on the south end, just a short drive from Mt. Hood, and it's northern end puts you right under Mt. Rainier. Halfway between are 2 other Cascade Range mountain beauties, Mt. Adams and Mt. St. Helens. It would take you many weeks to explore all the wonderful campgrounds, rivers, mountain and forest trails, alpine lakes and waterfalls dotting the Gifford Pinchot...and that's exactly what I did; spent 7 weeks exploring it's gorgeous interior from end-to-end.
To keep this review down to less-than-encyclopedia size, I'll just mention 2 of my favorite camp areas, attach some photos, and allow you to grab your tent, RV and a U.S. Forest/Topo map and go explore for yourselves!
Heading north from the Columbia River Gorge on Wind River Highway and Forest Road 65 will bring you to Panther Creek Falls and several great campgrounds in the area. A beautiful area for forest trails and waterfalls, enough to keep you busy for many days of exploration.
At the north end of the Gifford Pinchot is Nat'l Forest Road 25, which junctions with Hwy 12 at the little town of Randle. If you go south of Randle on 25 about 8 miles, you'll come to Iron Creek Campground (inexpensive, great forested campsites and lovely hosts,) right at the confluence of the rushing Iron Creek and it's larger, more rushing receiver, the Cispus River. Standing on the shore at this junction, and walking along it's trails, is a camping highlight not done justice by my attached photos, but it'll whet your appetite. Then drive back to Randle, turn right for a short drive through the next town east (Packwood) and go climb Mt. Rainier, starting at the visitors center in Paradise. In the summer, well-marked trails can take anyone quite high up the mountain, with nothing but a light jacket and some good walking shoes (see photo.)
Bottom line: if you're a lover of camping in deep, tall trees and fern-covered forest floors, with great lakes & rivers and walking trails galore...oh, and a few of the most majestic mountains on the planet...it doesn't get much better than this!
