Very nice way to spend a day, when the weather is not suitable for outdoor activities. Free admission. You learn a lot of history while viewing the portraits and reading about the persons depicted.

The National Portrait Gallery was amazing. It was a rainy afternoon in DC, and I had pretty much seen most of the things I had wanted to see for that day. I had the idea to go to the National Portrait Gallery which was nearby, and I will never regret it. This was one of my favorite museums. It had all the famous portraits of the presidents (every single president) that every knows from their childhood, as well as portraits of Hamilton, Franklin, Pocahontas, Francis Scott Key, etc. I highly recommend coming to this museum.

(Another) fantastic visit to this museum. Went on a June weekday afternoon; crowds were thin.

It's always fun to stroll the gallery of Presidents. This visit, I focused on the special exhibition of portraits of those involved in the justice movement, including an incredible painting of John Lewis. I also enjoyed an exhibit featuring portraits of those important to the environmental movement. And there's a new portrait of Oprah Winfrey that's fun to see and very vivid.

As always, I made some time to enjoy the sunny covered courtyard in the middle of the museum.

This museum's free entry makes it a wonderful place to stop-in and see just one or two exhibits before continuing with your day. I love it!

Visited this gallery in the late afternoon and found it virtually deserted. For those highly passionate in the study of art and/or American History, this gallery definitely deserves 1-2 hours of your time.

The gallery contains the famed Lansdowne and Athenaeum Portraits of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart, and displays the official presidential portraits of every subsequent President (including the famed ones of President Kennedy, Lincoln, Obama). The gallery also displays the best-known portraits of Michelle Obama, Admiral Nimitz, General MacArthur, and General Eisenhower.

Moreover, the gallery is connected to the Museum of American Art, which displays contemporary art from the past 50-80 years, including Nam June Paik's "Electric Superhighway," which I found stunning and marvelous!

This was a lot more fun than I thought it would be. Getting to see all the famous portraits of people all throughout history. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.

Truly a hidden gem amongst the “bigger” museums in the area. Going here was a spur of the moment decision fueled by Reddit reviews and it lived up to the hype that I read about. It’s much more than looking at pictures. Each painting/picture has a detailed description of what it is and the history behind it. The exhibits are top notch and truly a history lesson. There is much more “older American history” on display in this museum than in the “American History Museum.” Give yourself two hours to go through this if you want to read everything.

Excellent museum with varying exhibits. It shares space with the American Art Museum. The Amish Quilt Exhibit is fantastic. We did participate in the free docent-lead tour and the lady we had was just beyond excellent. I wish I remembered her name but she is a retired librarian and extremely knowledgeable. There is so much to see here!

Portraits of famous Americans organized by era and topic (industrialists, artists, politicians, etc). Most of the portraits are unimaginative likenesses that are unimaginatively displayed and unimaginatively explained. At the end, however, a few of the portraits themselves are a little more creative (eg: Octavia Butler), but the presentation is still boring. We visited while we waited 45 minutes for a table at a neighboring restaurant and felt like we'd seen as much as we wanted to see.

Lovely Gallery with some great portraits and information on each individual. Free to enter. No advanced reservations required.

Conveniently located in the Penn Quarter area...only a 15 minute walk to the White House and a 15 minute walk to the National Mall.

There is a large center area where the Orchid show currently is. Huge space with lots of tables and seating. There is also a small cafe selling Starbucks-like items there.

The Gallery is separated into a few areas including American Presidents, 20th Century Americans, Champions (Sports) and Portraits from 1600-1900.

Lots to see and learn...and of course, some awesome portaits. I loved the variety is art styles they covered throughout the Gallery. They realy did try to mix it up...which made it interesting.

Great experience...highly recommended.
