Very nice gallery. You get to see portraits of all US Presidents up through Obama (neither Trump or Biden were on display when we visited). Also portraits of other famous Americans and people in general from all walks of life. I especially enjoyed seeing real life pictures of what Daniel Boone and Davey Crockett looked like. I must have missed those on my last visit and they were surprising and not at all what I thought they would look like. The price of admission is free and there is also an American Art Gallery on the other side of the building (but we didn't have time to visit on either of our trips)

I always seem to be drawn to the portrait galleries in every major city I visit around the world, so I had to stop in here as well. Of course, my main reason was to see both Barack and Michelle Obama's painting. But, I also enjoyed the section with all the presidents' paintings as well. One thing, please offer a coat check. I could not stay as long as I might have otherwise if I could have put my heavy backpack and puffer coat away some where.

Notre musée préféré à Washington. La partie portraits présidentiels est géniale mais nous avons aussi découvert de très bons peintres américains. Le bâtiment en lui-même est magnifique. Vous pourrez y passer des heures sans vous ennuyer.

Acervo importante e vasto. Exposições temáticas temporárias interessantes e bem atuais, dialogando com referências históricas da cultura americana, suas tendências e questionamentos contemporâneos.
Instalações muito bem cuidadas, em edificação antiga, mas muito bem modernizada.
O pátio central - coberto por estrutura curvilínea muito bonita e aconchegante - constitui uma atração em si mesmo.
Sem necessidade de agendamento e a custo zero (um louvável padrão em Washington DC), é difícil não optar por passar algumas boas horas conhecendo as belezas da Instituição.
Estivemos lá num domingo pela manha, assim que se iniciava o horário de visitação. Em poucos minutos, as galerias se encheram de todo tipo de gente. Um espetáculo à diversidade etária, social, de raças e credos, sorvendo a riqueza das expressões artísticas em torno do “gênero” portrait.

I am not an avid l art lover but this place is amazing. Like all the Smithsonian's, it is free and it was not crowded at all. The place is huge and has thousands of paintings. I am not sure they do guided tours but I would recommend that if available. You can spend as much or little time as you want. To see most everything it would take at least a half a day. If you are tight for time make sure to see the President portrait gallery. Also, the inside courtyard is very nice and it is enclosed. You can take a rest and get some drinks and snacks there.

This is still one of the best places to visit in town, and very popular. Special exhibits on now include American entertainers and sports people, in addition to the great artwork and president's gallery. As with many DC spaces, do the exhibits and then just take a lap to enjoy the building's decorative details and the preservation that goes into keep it up.

The Kehinde Wiley portrait of President Barack Obama is a must-see. Beautiful atrium with glass canopy ceiling. Lots of galleries to explore, some are small and intimate. Unique collection.

The National Portrait Gallery takes up about half of each of the three floor of the old Patent Office Building. (The other half is the Smithsonian American Art Museum.) One of my favorite exhibits features the entries in the Outwin Bouvecher Portrait Competition. In addition, you can see historic figures as well as contemporary Americans. Unlike the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall, this museum is open until 7 p.m. every day.

Make sure to visit the Hall of Presidents, as well as see the amazing Michelle Obama painting on the floor above. Fantastic artwork and a great gift shop, as well as a wonderful atrium to take a break in.

Don’t miss. Right at Gallery Lace Metro, red, yellow, green lines. Adjacent to art museum, via a beautiful enclosed courtyard. Free. Opens late, but stays open light. Obama portraits are a draw. Temporary exhibit on Maya Lin is fantastic.

Take a look at the website and determine what you absolutely don’t want to miss. If you arrive a little before the museum opens, yo should not have an isssue with crowds. The presidential portrait exhibit is excellent. Be sure to visit the room where Michelle Obama’s portrait is located!

No wait to enter. I’ve seen a 10-15 minute wait to stand in front of President Obama’s portrait (Weekend), Mrs Obama’s portrait was just crowded.

You should take a look at the National Portrait Gallery's own website.
You'll find quite a lot of helpful information under the VISIT - ACCESSIBILITY section, including the following : "For your comfort, wheelchairs can be borrowed by asking the security officer stationed at each museum entrance".
[It might also be a good idea to "double-check" wheelchair availability with the museum in advance of your intended visit, using the Phone and/or Email details on their website]

How far is the National Portrait Gallery from the Convention Center? Is it walkable from hotel/center to the gallery? (Coming to DC in a few weeks for a conference and would love to slip away to visit the Gallery.) Thank you!

As mentioned above the fastest way to get there would be to take the Metro, otherwise it's a fairly short (10 minutes or so) walk.

No, you can simply walk in. If you visit during the week it is fairly quiet and even on weekends, it doesn't feel that busy (it is so vast that you don't notice the crowds!). There is no charge, unless there is a specific exhibition. I recommend half a day at least to see it all or simply go back the following day for a couple of hours. Do not miss the presidential portrait gallery and the contemporary American artists on the top floor. Enjoy!
