Must See!
2021年11月 • 好友
I got timed tickets for my sister and I about a month in advance. Entering was no problem, and I understand they reserve some spots for people without the advance reservation. Even so, it was a little crowded, although masks are required throughout the museum.

The architecture does a lot of the story telling, starting in the basement and moving up. The exhibits were extremely well curated, but it was still an overwhelming amount of history to take in. I appreciated the focus on regional differences. Nearly a month later I'm still processing much of the new information I learned.

A must see for all Americans
2021年11月 • 家庭
A must see and worth the trip to DC. This museum should be the basis for the education of our kids from Grade school through high school. It tells the story of the founding of our great country on the foundation of slave trade and enslavement. Everyone must see this whether you believe that you have “seen it all” or are “new” on the subject. I lived through Brown v Board civil rights MLK “I have a dream” and LBJ 1965 yet I learned so much - and there is yet so much to be done.

Absolute Must Visit
2021年10月
I feel like I won the lottery and FINALLY got tickets. I encourage everyone to keep trying and check their website frequently. I truly enjoyed all the exhibits. So much history. A lot of reading which I love! Then, lunch in the Cafe which was very good soul food. I also stopped at the Museum Shop to buy some swag. I thought it was very well priced. I plan to go again someday.

Do not miss this gem
2021年11月 • 家庭
Finally, there is a museum that strives to tell the complete picture of African Americans in the United States. The story begins with the original sin of slavery, and continues through the first 80 years of the U.S., the Civil War, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights era, into the current era. Of course, the many complicated legacies of these historic periods still are with us today, and the main exhibition concludes with such contemporary issues such as police reform and voting rights. We have come a long way, but there is much more to do with regards to racial equality.

The main galleries are actually in the basement, from levels C1 to C3 (begin at C3 and work your way up). More contemporary contributions of African Americans in art, culture, and music (which are substantial) can be found on the upper levels. The only downsides I can identify are (1) as is the case with many museums in Washington, there are so many visitors to the African American museum that there aren’t enough places to sit, especially after many hours on your feet, so you will become exhausted, and (2) there is so much great information presented that you will likely need more than one visit to the museum to appreciate it all. I spent 3 hours and still didn’t see everything. Of course, the museum is free, so multiple visits are within reason. Do not miss it.

Fantastic Museum!

We spent over 4 hours here and left only because we ran out of time. I learned a lot and would highly recommend this museum to everybody. The presentation was superlative and very understandable throughout. I came away with a little bit better understanding of the struggles faced by Black Americans over the years and a desire to learn more about it.

The full story finally told
2021年10月
My excellent rating rates my experience and is not meant to be an overall rating of the museum. Levels C1-C3 tell the story of the African-American from being brought to the U.S. as slaves to the present time. If you are African-American like me, the early history is gut-wrenching. If you are not African-American, then I hope that this history is an eye-opener and for the better. Having read one review, I know enough about that person to know that he is beyond hope.
My thanks to all the sponsors who made this museum possible. If you think about it, history is really what the people in charge deem is worthy of being written and preserved. The history presented in this museum has never been fully told. Now it has.

Parts are outstanding, others disappointing
2021年10月
the lower floors with the history of slavery through the Jim Crow era and civil rights era is outstanding. It should be required for everyone to visit. For the first time I understood why modern African Americans are due reparations as their ancestors generated well over half of the gross national product of American in the early 1800s. Our current wealth, and the wealth of many modern companies are clearly based on the labor of slaves.
However, the rest of the museum was very disappointing. The video and music exhibitions were shallow, incomplete, and poorly presented. The Experience Music Project in Seattle and the Levine Museum of the New South in Charlotte deal with the same material and present it in a far better way.
The cafeteria is great BTW.
