Went specifically to see the bonsai collection and was quite impressed by the variety, age, and styles. A nice place to spend an afternoon.

A hidden gem - Best place to be for solo , couples and families - A lot of trees and great scenery - If you happen to be in DC this is a must see

We stopped at the US Arboretum on our way into DC with my extended family and two nieces under the age of three. There was lots of room for the girls to run and play. The bonsai exhibit was phenomenal. The only downfall was the signage is a little bit unclear. It could’ve been difficult if we weren’t able to read a math effectively. My parents are planning to come back and spend additional time when they have the chance.

I have difficulty keeping plants and it is hard to express how I feel witnessing a tree half my size that is six times my age. It is humbling in many ways. I love the Bonsai exhibit and you have to go before it's packed away for winter.
I've been there when the Koi pond is drained too. They used to have a coin fish food machine so the kids could toss a quarter's worth of pellets to the fishes. It's silly not to have it, people pay to feed the fish instead of the management paying to do the same job. The koi are cool. I'd rather see a small mouth or a pumpkin seed though.
The herb garden was needing attention this trip and it was after bloom with flowers going to fruit. We saw some awesome purple peppers that were about an inch long elbow macaroni looking things that I knew if I put one on my tung it would be like licking a match.
This was the first time I walked to the columns. Most of the time I visit the Arboretum it is too hot for me to make that climb after being in the herb garden sunshine. This time it was overcast a bit and not too hot.
I'll be back.

There is so much to see at the National Arboretum. Great place for a long walk. We went during cherry blossom season, and though it doesn't have the concentration of cherry trees like the National Mall, it has so many varieties and through the guide on the app, we learned more about cherry trees and varieties than we ever had. The bonsai exhibit is nice as well. Would like to go back other times of the year to see what else is in bloom!

While there might be more impressive collections in other botanic gardens or arboretums, the National Arboretum is free to explore and offers a peaceful oasis away from the tourists and bustle of DC. This has become one of our favorite places to visit when in town. In season the dogwood collection is a wonderful spot to relax. A wealth of wandering trails offer good birding opportunities.

If you want to know how well seasoned and spiced DC is, visit the Arboretum near the Capitol. Trace the migration of flavors, herbs and spices. Buy an exotic sample taste.

Let me be clear: I am a great fan of the National Arboretum. I live in DC and have visited it many times. It is a great resource, with many beautiful gardens and areas.
BUT: We went last weekend to see the azalea collection, which is truly a world-class collection. After parking, we encountered the sign whose photo I am attaching. As you can see, it says that the azaleas are to the right.
This contradicted my memory, having been there many times before. I felt sure that the azaleas were straight ahead, overlooking that field with the pseudo-Graeco-Roman ruin. I should have listened to my intuition.
We walked, and walked, and walked, in the blazing sun. There were no subsequent signs. After what I estimate to be a little over a mile, uphill, we came to a barrier that said pedestrians were not permitted to go any farther because it was an eagle refuge.
Now, eagle refuges are a good thing. What is NOT a good thing is incorrect signage. We turned around and walked back, and then did what I originally thought was the right thing, and lo and behold, the azaleas were just a short walk away. They were, unfortunately, not at their peak - I'm not sure whether before or after. Certainly in residential areas of DC, there are many azaleas clearly at their peak, so I don't know.
But the point of this review is: why does no one from their staff correct the signage? My hope is that someone from the Arboretum sees this and acts on it, because it was an incredibly unpleasant experience.

A classic hot house with exotic plant and various seasonal displays reopened in April, 2022. There is also a very impressive landscaping park surrounding it, looking great for Spring.

Great place to stretch your legs and get away from the crowds. This is a place to see cherry blossoms and skip the parking challenges downtown.

I believe they don't have either. Maybe call for information, in case they provide other means to accommodate.

How do I get there using public transportation from the DC tourist area?

Use Uber or Lift. There are no nearby metro stops and I have no idea which bus lines may stop near the Arboretum. Further, the area surrounding it is dicey to downright dangerous so I would not advise waiting outside the gates for some bus.

Hi,
Is it possible to park around or in the arboretum?
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't find anything on the website...
Thanks for the help

Free parking everywhere. There are many parking lots near each collection, but you can park on the side of the road almost everywhere. Signs will tell you if you can't park somewhere, but basically you can pull over (not too far off the road) anywhere and just get out of your car. Kind of amazing, actually.

I've searched the Arboretum site and can't find any mention of a sky-walk that encircles much of the park. One of the visitor reviews refers to it. What was he talking about?

I have been to the "Arb" a bazillion times, mostly to walk my dogs. There is no skywalk. It's an arboretum, trees grow in the ground, we have to walk on the ground.
As one commenter remarked, there is a sort of skywalk at the National Botanical Gardens. Which is quite delightful, my teenage niece and nephews insisted on a visit 10 years after their first visit some years ago.
The National Arboretum is beyond the Washington DC tourist circle, but wonderful. The National Botanical Gardens is a quarter mile from the Capitol and also delightful.

I see that the trams within the park don’t operate until April. Can you see much of park just walking. Or do you need a bike?

Walking the whole arboretum would be a major hike. There is public trans to near the entrance, and there is a good motorized tour through the whole thing (which is large).
There is a bike share at the entrance to the arb. I walk my dogs there often, and there seem to be many bikes at the entrance most of the time. For a pedestrian arriving at the entrance, I would advise getting a bike, there are many interesting areas, separated by what would be significant walks between.
If you want a few hours of walking, it's easy to see several quite distinct areas.
