Rock Creek Park
2021年6月
Full disclosure - I probably should have programed by GPS better. I intended to go to the southern end of the park, near the bridge and the nature center. However, my GPS took me to the northern end of the park. (Of course, I won't hold that against Rock Creek Park.) As it was later in the evening and the road through the park was closed to vehicles, I decided I didn't have enough time to figure out how to get to where I wanted to go and opted to talk a walk. I walked part of the Valley Trail along Rock Creek, then took Beach Road back.

I couldn't believe I was in Washington, DC! I've been to Washington many times. It's one of my favorite places to visit. It's also filled with people, traffic, and buildings. Rock Creek Park was forested, quiet and calm. It felt more like my native New England than Washington. Instead of marble architecture, I was surrounded by trees. Instead of traffic and people, the air was silent. It was unreal, but in a good way.

Overall, it was a very nice evening walk. I'd still like to get to the south end of the park to see more, but I'd recommend the north end to anyone looking to talk a nice walk in the woods.

Glorious cycling (followed by an obstacle course)
2021年6月
This is a cycling review (Beach Drive from Garrett Park, MD to Georgetown, 16 miles) in two necessary parts.

Part One (Beach Drive from Garrett Park, MD to Pierce Mill at Broad Branch Rd. NW): Five stars, hands down. This is, arguably, the best cycling route in the DMV (stay off the trail unless you have small children or safety anxieties). Stretches of Beach Drive along this route have been closed to vehicular traffic since the pandemic; from Friday to Sunday, most of the rest is closed to cars, eliminating safety concerns. A cathedral of trees along side a cooling creek, you can feel the temperature drop 10 degrees in the otherwise oppressive summer heat. Largely repaved, Beach is now a wide, smooth, one-and-a half hours of effortless cycling in either direction. You barely notice you are in the big city. In the summer, stop off at Norman's Farm Market (at East-West Highway) for a big, fat, juicy peach. One of the cycling glories of the DMV.

Part Two (Pierce Mill south to Georgetown, 4 miles): The fun ends here, two stars. You are now in survival-of-the-cautious territory. At Pierce Mill, cyclists are strongly advised to exit Beach Drive (now a busy four-lane road with no shoulder and a high, unforgiving stone curb) and proceed along the trail. However, you are trading constant 40 mph traffic for an obstacle course teeming with both hikers and cyclists. The first, surprisingly, is the neat-and-tidy plastic trail laid down as a detour around all the construction at Pierce Mill. It is deceptively slick so slow down. Many blind turns follow so announce yourself. At a bridge and a long tunnel, the trail is so narrow that cyclists must dismount, there is barely room to get around anything coming in the opposite direction. You then confront a series of "bunkers" where flood waters have covered the trail with sand. You think the sand is compact and you can ride over it, and it is. Until it isn't. Just get off and walk, especially when cyclists who know their way around are flying at you in the opposite direction. More construction and unfamiliar detours await those trying to exit the trail for Georgetown onto P and M streets. All in all, exercise extreme caution (along with large tires). Avoid cycling this part of the trail entirely if you are from out-of-town. You didn't come all this way just to fall off your bike.

Great park in a city
2020年6月
I have been to this park many times over the year and I think it is a great feature to have in a city. It is a very long park but it great way to beat the heat in the summer and take a drive or a walk.

Fine the Old Capitol Stones

Pretty park... We went specifically to find the Old Capitol Stones. Short hike in... One of my favorite things we did in the week we were in Washington.

Awesome 23 km hike here in Washington DC today. One of the most tranquil hikes I’ve done. ⭐️⭐️⭐️Just beautiful forests and rivers all along the way. Bridges dating back 150 years ago. Woman , families with children hike here and you feel safe💥💥💥. Took over 6 hours to do this hike and loved it. Awesome to see a Mill en en route.
Spectacular hike being over 90 percent of the time in lush forest
I did a 16 hour Trans Atlantic flight to do come so this hike and I feel refreshed 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Peaceful and serene in parts and great by bike or horseback

The park offers different experiences for sports minded and for families. Pierce Mill on Park Road offers cultural events. But most of the park is far from public transportation so one must visit by auto.

Very beautiful park

We kept on driving thru and realizing that is has much beauty from the many angles we saw it fro our car windows. We have promised to allow more time next time to actually get out and enjoy the beauty in person instead of from afar.

A great park system in Washington D.C.
2019年6月 • 独自旅游
Rock Creek Park is the whole Park system in the heart of Washington D.C. Rock Creek is very well known by locals because of the creek running through the city and the Rock Creek Parkway which is one of the busy through way in and out of the city. As far as the park, it is a park system with picnic areas. The tennis stadium, golf course and trails and hinking. Unfortunately, it is easily accessed by locals. As far as visitors, the Georgetown Waterfront Park is part of the whole system. Great park in the heart of the city.
