Coming on public transit? Walk through the forest!
If you don't have a car (and parking at the museum is limited), you can take Metro or a bus, then Lyft/Uber/cab. But if you want a break from the city, take the D2 bus from Dupont Circle Metro to the end of the line at 42nd St and Davis Place. There you'll see a trail leading into the forest... after 10-15 minutes of cool silence, you'll be back on pavement. From there is a steep hill to walk up (along city streets), then a few minutes' walk along Foxhall Road to the museum.

There are a couple of junctions along the trail where GPS is helpful. If it's been raining, the trail will probably be slick. Also, there are two stream crossings that may be tough if the water is high after rain. But it's worth the effort to be alone, away from the city, in a quiet forest.

Hey Instagrammers this spot is for you!!
If you are looking to escape the city for a little bit of "Me Time" and you have a black belt in heavy traffic, you shall enjoy the trip to the Kreeger Museum. Consider using public transportation (Taxi/Uber/Lyft). We went on a Friday and found the parking very limited.

The location is nestled in a neighborhood and allows you to feel like you came by to admire a friend's private collection. This museum has an easily digestible amount of art to lose yourself in and wander. Due to to the small size of this museum, parents, you will not lose your children in this museum.

You will need to buy your tickets online in advance. A limited amount of tickets are sold per day to keep the capacity of the museum at a safe number. This is also an affordable activity in the DC area - timed tickets are free. They provide a suggested donation of $10.00 for the general public, $8.00 for Students, Military and Seniors, Free for children 12 years and below.

My family loved the artwork and sculptures. I personally enjoyed exploring the design of the building, grounds and sculpture garden. To me it felt like something out of Star Wars on Tatooine, where everyone hung out at the Mos Eisley Cantina. Wear something Instagrammable, you'll love the sculpture garden and water feature out back.

If you are looking for a little privacy tucked away in the city, this is for you!!! *** The museum is not very easy to maneuver if you are mobility challenged, there are a lot of stairs. Behind the museum is a small wooded path on a steep slope if you wish to walk the property more. Do not wear heels or open toed shoes to walk the path.

Make time for this delightful museum
With most of Washington’s museums difficult to find tickets for because of pandemic restrictions, we were forced to explore a little further afield than the great institutions on the mall. So glad this led to our discovery of the Kreeger Museum, a small gem located in a home/gallery designed by Philip Johnson in a lush, forested setting that makes a stunning background for the sculpture garden, a highlight of the visit. The collection includes some seldom-seen paintings by 19th and 20th century masters like Cezanne, Monet, Kandinsky, and Avery. There’s also an exhibition space for contemporary artists.

Underrated Art Museum
2020年9月 • 独自旅游
I’ve been to the Kreeger Museum a few times and I’ve brought friends visiting from out of town. It’s formerly a mansion/estate that was converted into a museum. I don’t know how to describe the architecture of the building, it’s definitely angular and modern, especially juxtaposed with the Colonial style homes of Upper Northwest. The collection features Monet and Picasso. There is also a sculpture garden and pool that are fun to walk around. It’s definitely a 45-90 minute visit if you see everything but, I highly recommend it if you’re into art.

Small collection in a fascinating building
A visit to the Kreeger comes in two parts: it's an opportunity to see a small but focused collection of late 19th and early 20th century art by some big names (Monet, Picasso, etc) and not so well known artists, plus it allows you to tour one of the most unusual house plus gallery buildings ever designed, by Philip Johnson. The museum has a few acres of grounds that are mostly left to woods, but that also serve as an outdoor setting for some interesting sculptures. Definitely worth making the trek to see, but small enough that it only requires a couple of hours, or less, to tour. Limited free parking is available onsite. Be aware that the only way to access the downstairs galleries (which hold a lovely collection of African masks among other things) is via a long set of stairs. There is no elevator.

An amazing collection in a private museum
The first thing that strikes one is that the very museum (former home of Kreeger and his wife Carmen) is a ajor work of art by the famous architect Philip Johnson. It is not large collection, but every work is a masterpiece: a large collection of Monets, some important works of Picasso. Also, you find some fine painters as Gaugin and Van Gogh which might not be immediately recognizable and are not typical of painterslate period. The same applies to one fo two Marc Chagall´s paintings. It is also supplemented by fine examples of African tribal art.

Housed in a Phillip Johnson designed building, this collection includes European Impressionists( 9 Monets) and modern artist, Picasso and Miro. A lovely small museum with beautiful grounds.

Wonderful private museum!

During the government shutdown we explored many private museums and were very pleased to visit the Kreeger Museum. Beautiful grounds with many sculptures exhibited. Wish we could have visited in summer instead of winter. Access to the ground floor is a challenge for the mobility impaired as there is no elevator,

A Small Art Museum Place You Could Relax
2019年1月 • 夫妻情侣
A small wonderful art museum with a small collection of Chagall, Monet, Picasso, Miro, Renoir, Cezanne and, yes, good collection of Rodin sculpture. Only drawback is a small parking lot. The building the art museum houses itself is a piece of art. We actually sat down at a library and read some art books. We haven't done that for years. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
