I have not been into this location but have been on the grounds several times activating this park for ham radio. I think the most difficult thing for most people might be that it is up on a hill. Great view of the city from Southeast.

The Frederick Douglass National Site provides visitors with a wealth of knowledge. I’ve been to a lot of museums but this one gave a great deal of information as to who Douglass really was and how he become such an important figure. I don’t want to ruin anything but the video in the visitor center is a MUST! The gift shop was really cool as well. The National Parks Service maintains a great place!

This wasn't my first time to DC. But having already done most of the standard touristy things--this was a great site. Douglass meant a lot to this country and his story is inspiring. We didn't explore the Anacosta area afterwards but I have heard there was good restaurants there.

A great historical site to visit for people of all ages. The workers are polite and keep the grounds up well. The information is presented for understanding by children and adults. There is a 20min video you can watch before you do a tour. Tours are by reservation and it is suggested you make the reservation before visiting. We did not have a reservation as we stopped by on the way to the airport but we still had an enjoyable time. There is a small
Museum type setup along with gift shop in the visitors center.

We had the most incredible tour. Our tour guide was amazing, and great with our kids too. We learned so much in a short amount of time. Do not hesitate to book this tour, you won't regret it!

The house tour is a must-do if you visit. The volunteer who gave us the tour was very informative, shared some personal anecdotes, and I learned a lot about the house and about Frederick Douglass. He accomplished a lot, especially given his background. 70% of the items in the house are original. It is a very nice house. You can see into downtown DC from the house and see the Washington Monument and Capitol. There are a lot of steps to climb to get to the house, and then some stairs to get to the second floor. Tour is a little less than an hour long.

The film in the visitor center (yes, it's old; has closed captioning) covers some of the same ground as the tour, but the tour really made visiting worth it. There's a small gift shop and a few exhibits (wall of quotes, I believe, and a bit of history on Frederick Douglass).

Luckily, I was able to walk in and get a ticket for the tour, but for best results you should probably reserve a ticket online. As others have noted, there is ample parking.

For people who have the National Parks passport, there are a lot of passport stamps from parks in the Washington, DC area (at the front desk). They even have ones for the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Suitland Parkway.

The house of Frederick Douglass and its grounds, situated in Anacostia's Cedar Park, afford a splendid view out over the river and downtown DC. Anacostia was originally a neighborhood inhabited by African Americans of means. Most of these families lost their wealth in a depression during the 1870s. Douglass had considerable wealth from his book royalties and business ventures. So he bought the house and five-acre estate, expanded the house from 14 to 21 rooms, and lived out his life here until his death in 1895. We would visit this site again, especially if there were a tour of the inside of the building. The climb from the parking lot to the house is challenging.

To visit the home of Frederick Douglass is priceless. The is a mansion and called Cedar Hill. The gift shop and entry is on the street level. To get to the mansion requires a nice hike straight up. So, if one has health issues please consider that as part of your visit. There are no elevators. However, all is not lost as once you check in you will be treated to a very nice video as well as real life statue of Douglass. You can also purchase your tour ($1) tickets online.

The site is easy to get to from the Metro. Just take the Green line to Anacostia and take the A2 bus (or ask staff) as the drop off is on the corner of the property. It is about a 5 minute bus ride.
