While talking to a shop keeper in old town Eureka this park was suggested to us. We were told to do the #1 trail loop. It took us about 25 minutes. There were other trails there, I wish we had a map to know distances on them. What an amazing walk!! Beautiful!! Trail is very well kept but narrow in some spots. You descend down into the forest before climbing again so be prepared. We were able to check another “to do” off of our vacation list, seeing banana slugs!

Gorgeous baby redwoods. I couldn’t believe how lush & secluded this area was, considering it is in the heart of town. Was a little muddy, so I recommend wearing rain boots. It gets relatively steep after the first 15 minutes, so keep that in mind for your group. Thoroughly loved this area!

You could spend as short or long a time as you want meandering around the multiple connecting trails here. Gorgeous big trees and lots of stumps to climb and fallen trees to balance on to bring a little fun with kids. Dog friendly!

Beautiful spot, but when I was there on a recent weekday afternoon there were many people not wearing masks on narrow trails, loose aggressive dogs, drum circles, screaming kids, obnoxious teenagers, and people camping in the woods. Left quickly and probably won't be back. Also: be forewarned that the trails can be steep and uneven.

Hidden Gem, like being transported to a magical forest. Tons of trails to explore, and trees large enough to hide inside. Definitely a wonder of Arcata.

This was part of my regular hiking schedule for twenty years or so. Trails are plainly marked through a large redwood grove with streams, old charred stumps and giant ferns. Also signs are posted to help explain old time logging practices. One of these stumps was Robert Carlson's hideout when he was killing students in the area, and where he killed himself. Trolls may yet be found in hidden stumps, so be aware.

I am so lucky to live here. I bike and hike regularly at the Arcata Community Forest trail system. Very few people have opportunities like this. Very happy.

Just a few blocks from where we were staying, I wandered into the Arcata Community Forest the first morning after we arrived. Just a short stroll along the trails, and all sounds of the city disappear. The park is well maintained, though the trails can be a bit challenging, especially after a rain. This is a perfect place to experience a connection with nature and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Would like to know about public horseback riding options in these parts (i.e. guided rides 2-3 hours in length). Any suggestions?

I might be a bit late, but there was a place called the Lazy J (or L?) ranch when I was a kid that did horse rides...
