Quiet town and small great place or we thought. After a few.days i was puzzed and could not figure out why no tourists. No crowds on holiday weekend no swimmers !. So asked my wife it felt odd so much it bugged me to Google the place. Massive past super fund site w 40 yeats of unical oil leaks and spills covered this entire town. All excavated waste dumped into local land fill, leaked. They rebuilt the town. But now issues with poor water, alge, and more possible aledged, nuclear waste and sewage.
I can't find much more other than the super fund was big but now inactive status. So sad. But never coming back. People are nice here but can justify being in this history of a clean up. Chevron still has tank farm 100 feet up the hill. Explain the ghost town and weird vibe. I can't trust the area, sorry.
I hope its not a current health issue.

Always fun to walk a working pier. We ate in one of the 2 restaurants. The fish tacos were delicious.

It was a great view but while walking out, I kept my eyes down and my hand on my phone. There's some big gaps between the well worn boards. The pier was closed off before the end but some folks were able to fish. Cute town.

Plans to improve may never happen- the wood was very un sturdy
Be careful and keep you eyes down. Once we reached the closed off end, did not see a reason to venture out to begin with.

We never miss a walk along the pier. It needs upgrading and it is a worthwhile charity. Please support the pier as Avila Beach wouldn't be the same without it.

I Love Piers; Love walking on them feeling the ocean, move them, all of it. On this trip we could only walk one half ways, as was closed, part of it.

As far as beach's go, Avila Beach is as good as any, nothing too noteworthy about it. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful, clean, and a great way to spend a day at the beach. We liked walking around, stopping for a cold drink, wandering in the various shops and all, it was extremely relaxing and a pleasant way to spend the afternoon.
However, here's where things went to another level. We walked out on to the pier and it just so happened to be feeding time for the pelicans and cormorants. It was amazing! I think we spent over a half an hour watching the pelicans, which flew right up to us, hovering over the surf and then diving into the water to catch their dinner. Meanwhile, the cormorants were floating along, then diving down and coming up with a fish. These birds were fascinating and beautiful to watch in their natural habitat doing what they naturally do.
That time in the pier was the highlight of our short getaway on the central coast. It's a must see!

It's old but it's still good. Not accessible in my opinion. The highlight was watching the only wetsuit-less surfers we saw from Moss Landing to Pismo Beach. Amazing,

As piers go, the Avila Beach pier is fine. There is not much there except pier and there is not much of Avila beach to look back on. If you go to AB you go for the cute shops and restaurants plus a little beach time. The pier is a bonus. There is no need to make it a special trip.

Avila Beach Pier has been half blocked and they've been trying to renovate it for years so it's great for looks but not so much for functionality. If you want functionality like being able to fish you just need to drive a little up the way to Harford Pier.
The views at Harford are good too; there's boats and whales and sea lions to watch.

We were there in November and it was open. In fact, we had lunch at Merseas! The fish market was open also.
