Adventure of a lifetime and help save the reef!
2019年2月 • 好友
To reiterate several of the other reviews, we just stumbled upon Dianny's shop while souvenir shopping and struck up a conversation with a welcoming friendly lady.
I'M SO GLAD WE DID!
We immediately knew we wanted to try the lionfish fishing trip. It was an absolute blast and definitely the highlight of our trip for me. Everyone was so friendly and patient. They really taylor the experience for you and your groups interest and ability.
Upon returning to Caye Caulker, Gerry prepped the fish for us and we had it cooked by a local BBQ right on the beach.
It's not heavily advertised, so just look for the small shop with the RAINBOW UMBRELLA and ask Dianny about it. (she said she is having signs painted to advertise the tour, so hopefully they are up soon)

Dianny is such a nice and welcoming person! We were amazed by her work, a wide variety of beautiful bracelets, anklets, necklaces, earrings made by Dianny, which can also be custom made. She is really a talented artist! Thank you Dianny, I love my unique stone necklace! It will remind me of my awesome trip to Belize each time I wear it!

UNFORGETTABLE ADVENTURE ON CAYE CAULKER!!!
2019年1月 • 好友
Stumbling upon this shop on Caye Caulker's main strip led to an amazing adventure I will never forget. The owner, Dianny, was an absolute pleasure and made us feel like family. She was very knowledgeable in the invasive species of Lionfish and made such unique hand-crafted pieces of Lionfish jewelry. She not only educated us, but also set up an amazing tour where we snorkeled with the most beautiful sea creatures and actually got to spear Lionfish - how cool!!! In addition, upon on our return, she arranged for our "catch" to be cooked at a local restaurant for dinner which was absolutely delicious. For sure one of the best days we had on our trip. If you find yourself on this beautiful island, you must visit this shop. Trust me, you will not regret it!

Go on the Lionfish Tour: You Won't Regret It!

If you already know about the ecological impacts to the Caribbean caused by the invasive lionfish, you will appreciate the efforts that Dianny (“Dee-anny”) has gone to in order to educate others and promote the management of lionfish populations. Beyond making jewelry and promoting lionfish consumption on the island, she offers a unique lionfish spearfishing tour that is more competitively priced than just about anything else on the island, allows one to do a small bit towards conserving the area’s natural beauty, is a great form of exercise, and allows one to catch their own dinner.

Stumbling upon her shop along the main drag on Caye Caulker, we couldn’t resist the appeal. And we are glad we tried it: the tour was simply phenomenal! Our small group of four agreed that this was easily one of the highlights of an already incredible vacation on Caye Caulker. Although we had no previous experience with freediving, we were able to get the hang of it (partially because the fishermen who took us out ensured we didn’t have to dive too deep), and by the end, we had not only speared 42 lionfish, but had also seen more marine life than some of the group had seen on previous (more expensive) snorkeling tours. This experience was even more meaningful as we reached shore at the end of the tour, and a local fisherman approached us, saw our catch, and thanked us for helping to manage the lionfish population, which pose a serious threat to local fish stocks and the livelihoods of many locals.

The amazing day was capped off with a phenomenal meal: our guides prepared the lionfish, and we brought our catch down to the Enjoy Restaurant and Bar and asked them to cook it up for us. They gladly obliged, and created an incredible meal, including sides and drinks, for a remarkably low price.

If you are even slightly interested in this tour, you simply must walk down and talk to Dianny, or email her (see pictures).

A Terrific Experience

In waiting for our tour guide, Dianny and her father gave us the most delicious ceviche I ever had! I had personally never had lionfish ceviche, let alone the animal. I also loved the artistic jewelry Dianny had made from natural materials from the environment and the Lionfish scales, spikes, and more. If you go to Caye Caulker in Belize, you must go and see Dianny! You would not regret it.

Fun and interesting chance to learn about Belize's fishing culture and to help save the reef
2016年7月 • 独自旅游
Lionfish Souvenirs' and Adventures "Lionfish Experience" tour was great. It is run very much as a local family enterprise, with owner Dianny joined by her dad Gavino and brother Miguel. Dianny met me at her shop which is conveniently located on the main drag in Caye Caulker. She provided an informative briefing about invasive lionfish and the threat they pose to native fish populations, explaining that the only way to control them is by hunting them, which need to be done by hand using spears or hand nets. She then fitted me out with fins, mask snorkel and a Hawaiian sling spear. At this point Miguel came by and walked me down to the dock where Gavino was waiting with their boat, a fiberglass skiff which is the boat of choice for Belize's fishermen who use them to free dive for lobster, conch and reef fish, depending on the season.

Once I was settled in the boat, we headed off to a spot on the reef where Gavino figured we'd find lionfish. As it turned out, the water was quite murky at the spot in question, with low visibility so Gavino moved on to another spot farther down the reef. This time the water was clear and was teeming with fish around the patch of coral heads. We got in the water and Miguel helpfully pointed out several small lionfish that were hiding under a coral head in about 15 feet of water. Down I went but was unable to spear them despite several attempts. I eventually handed the spear off to Miguel who expertly dispatched the invasive critters while I was admiring both his skill and the beautiful coral and reef life.

On to another spot and this time I was more successful, nailing two fish in two tries. We continued at this spot for a while and then moved on to several others, including a neat wreck site around which there were a lot of fish, including several lionfish. On the run between sites, Gavino explained how the fishing industry in Belize is structured and also talked about how tourism is (positively) impacting coastal towns like Caye Caulker

In all, I managed to spear about a half dozen lionfish while Miguel and Gavino dispatched a dozen between them. Most were small, which is good as it is better to get them off the reef before they grow up!

After a fun couple of hours on the water we headed back in. Unfortunately I didn't get to experience what I understand is another cool part of the tour; a lionfish lunch prepared by Dianny, as the fish we speared were small. However, she did show me how she makes beautiful jewelry from the fins of the lionfish.

All in all an interesting and fun experience!
