Mosquitos

Late Preclassic Era Mayan Site

A very nice, seaside archaeological site, much of which remains to be excavated. Can be viewed in a few hours.

A Peaceful Gem for those willing to drive
This ruin was beautiful. The groundskeepers are doing a fantastic job in cleaning the surrounding area and building places to relax. Since it's a bit of a travel there are substantially less people around. (We arrived at 10am, stayed until 1230pm and were still the only people visiting). The ocean views were beautiful. When we arrived we ate our lunch on the dock by the information building which felt wonderful. Many of the ruins have crumbled over time but they are also working to restore a lot of it.
If you are willing to make the drive (we drove 2 hours from Belize City) and you want a peaceful place to visit ruins, this is a place to see. Plenty of shade when walking around the outer site, as well.
Non-residents pay $10 Belizean ea. but it's well worth it.
Be mindful that the road to the actual site is very narrow and has some pretty heavy potholes so be very careful and take your time when driving on it. They try to stay on top of filling them with gravel but some spots are worn out from when the rainy season makes it muddy.

Beautiful location, small site
We took a taxi from Corozal for 50 usd, return trip with waiting. It took us may be 45 minutes to reach the place. Location is very beautiful by the sea and well kept. The site is small, you have to pay 5 usd as entrance fee. 1 hour is enough to see the big site, plan more time to just walk around further. Worth to go if you have free time or very interested in archeology. There is small museum. Take water and bug spray with you.

Most peaceful and remote mayan site
Found it due to Tripadvisor reviews, that promise a small archaeological site near the sea. I must confess they did not state the beauty and peace we found at the site.
Cerros features two ballcourts and 4 rather small structures, out of which the most impressive one beholds 4 huge Stucco masks. But the most intense feeling you get is when you reach the heights and see the Caribbean waters.
Cerros ruins are located in a remote region of the Corozal bay with few villages, after driving for some time on a solitary bush road. That's why the small amount of people that visits the area, will allow you to wonder around at your own will, daydreaming about the lives of those who lived in these lands, mayan kings and priests and their worshiped gods. We enjoyed a lot getting off track from the well known tourist landmarks, spending an afternoon of deserted peace and tranquility.
For you to enjoy, make sure you bring lots and lots of insect repellent!!

nice place to visit
Stopped here after leaving Sarteneja, by rental 4WD SUV, on my way back down to the Orange Walk District. It is "out there" if you're not staying locally. The roads are unpaved and can get very bad after heavy rains. Inquire about road conditions before you set out, and take your own drinks and snacks.

When I arrived, I asked the park ranger if they had water for sale - no. He did cut me a fresh coconut to drink! That's Belizean hospitality.

There's not a whole lot excavated here. The ruins are small, you can climb some, and the setting by the bay is gorgeous. Be sure to walk the other trails to the ball courts. Very few tourists here. I did not have a problem with bugs. The style of the ruins is different from the ones in the Cayo.

For info on the site, see Belize's NICH (National Institute of Culture and History) website. On the Home page is a Notice banner which displays the status (open or closed) of the various archaeological reserves. On the right, click on Institute of Archaeology. On the right of this page click on Archaeological Sites and Parks. Here you can find info on Cerros and many more sites.

Smaller ruin, but still worth the stop!
We stopped here on the way back from a day trip to Sarteneja. It's one of the smaller ruins in Belize, but the grounds are very well maintained and beautiful with lots of landscaping. This is also the only Mayan Ruin that overlooks the sea, which is pretty cool. If you're in the area, I'd recommend stopping. If you only have time to do one Mayan ruin in Belize though, I'd recommend doing one of the bigger ones, like Lamanai, Caracol, or Altun Ha.

Spiritual...
If you are staying near this area definitely check out this gorgeous ruin site. We were staying at the Cerros Beach Resort. From there we took a 40 minute hike through the rainforest right along the coast. We had walking sticks with us which is totally unnecessary but to take down spider webs in your path. :)

When you take this path, you enter from the back side of the ruin site and walk right in between two massive uncovered ruins. Follow the path that brings you to the little visitor center where you pay $10BZ ($5) each and you are free to explore. While it's mostly uncovered and not quite as epic as some of the other sites like Xunantunich and Altun Ha it is still quite a beautiful place. There are picnic places and a nice dock to walk out on. My husband and I found it to be quite peaceful and spiritual. We spent many hours just wandering, feeling like explorers and were the only ones there the entire visit.

A beautiful quiet setting.
No a large site, but in a scenic location on the shore of Corozal Bay. We hiked there twice from where we were staying at the Cerros Beach Resort. There were just a handful of other visitors. Enjoyed a quiet picnic lunch along the shore.
