The cemetery could be kept up better. I think that because of the location (the bottom) nobody really cares.

You wouldn't think strolling through a cemetary would be much of an interesting trip. We took our car and drove through two hundred plus years of Augusta history. There are many markers depicting the lives of people long gone who helped build our city. We were looking for a few relatives of my wife and discovered lots of nationalities, veterans of wars, both civil and international who had gone before us and we could more appreciate their sacrifice by seeing their graves in person. There are Catholic, Baptist and Jewish sections which are separate from many others. All in all, a very different and inspiring sojourn into history.

I am not the type of person that makes a habit of visiting cemeteries but I was traveling with my family and my parents. My mom and dad wanted to stop so we checked it out.

This is a very old cemetery with stones dating to the 1800s. It has some really cool headstones and is full of history. I found it to be interesting, creepy, and beautiful at the same time.

It does not seem well maintained but that added to the eeriness of the place. I kept laughing and saying that someone needs to film a horror movie or Vampire show there. There are broken stones, gates, and even some broken coffin type structures that made you feel like someone had escaped from the graves.

This is a large 60 acre historic cemetery that was established in 1818. While strolling through the cemetery you will find confederate generals, five jewish cemeteries, and a greek cemetery. It's supposed to be haunted.

We never found it but the oldest tree (a crepe myrtle) in Georgia is supposed to be in this cemetery. There is also a brick wall on the east side that was fortified during the Civil War to protect Augusta.

The cemetery grounds are well kept as are the tree lined roads. I actually stepped on a small fire ant mound and then I started noticing how many there were. Many of the grave markers also had fire ant mounts built around them so be sure to keep your eyes open. The brick sidewalks are also in bad shape and are a tripping hazard so I would avoid them if you are walking instead of driving through the cemetery. We also saw a lot of bluebirds just hanging out on the headstones.

My grandpa was born in this area and I was looking for his father’s grave. The gentleman in the office was very helpful in getting us within 2 family plots of my ancestors. Since they lived before the civil war, the computer listings did not go that far back. The property is beautiful and oozes of history when reading the tombstones. The Magnolia trees are enormous and were a lovely backdrop on a cool fall day of finding my roots.

Founded in August 1818, the Magnolia cemetery in Augusta is over 60 acres. The land where the cemetery is located was once a plantation and was sold to the City Council of Augusta for $800. Here you will find separate sections for Confederate soldiers, several Jewish cemeteries, a Greek cemetery as well as the general population.

While you are here, make sure to go next door to Cedar Grove cemetery (as you leave Magnolia’s entrance, turn right and you will come to the entrance in about a minute) which was established a couple years later. The graves are not elaborate like next door but they are rich in black history. In the beginning, slaves were buried here in unmarked graves. The old and new graves are mixed together so walk around and look. You never know what you will find.

I came here on a Sunday morning and had both of these cemeteries to myself. I do recommend going to Cedar Grove first since the tree cover is sparse compared to that of Magnolia.

A patriot among patriots. Augusta has more history that is not realized by others. A great place to visit is Magnolia Cemetery for all people.

We were driving by and I had heard of some of the historical graves. We decided to pay our respect and stroll through the beautiful grounds. There indeed is much history there.
