Don’t go in the water!! You could break your knee, shoulder, neck ect or even worse!! You vacation can end and fly home early with 35k surgery within 7 days after entering!! Talk to life guards, beautiful beach but not worth broken bones. Maui Hospital says the beach keeps them busy… so sad.

Beautiful beach recommended in multiple books and sites, but be very careful of the undertow and shore break. The waves look small but the break is very powerful.

I loved the beach but it seems incredibly surprised that there were no signs about the danger and the sharks around. I am still freaking out after reading the reviews about the lack of information when you get to the beach. I understand each one has to evaluate the danger !

This is a very beautiful beach, but also incredibly deceiving at how dangerous it can be. I'm an experienced ocean swimmer/surfer and went out for a bit of body surfing here. The waves didn't seem large at all, and I must have not noticed the warning signs as you enter the beach. The first wave I caught, I dropped down and hit the bottom. My back was a bit sore, but luckily I was otherwise unhurt. I immediately exited, and shortly afterward the lifeguards started announcing all the various injuries that regularly occur here.
If you go here, just admire the beauty from the sand. The shore break here is no joke.

This beach is beautiful!!! BUT...Be very careful!!! I thought I was being careful and safe, but it isn't really possible at Big Beach with the powerful huge waves pounding you to the shore! I was relaxing on an intertube and when the Lifeguard said "Unless you are a very experienced swimmer, you shouldn't be in the water," I tried to exit the water safely, but just when I last suspected it, a huge wave pummeled me into a boulder just underneath the water on the sandy shore. My arm was instantly throbbing and injured from the elbow to the wrist. It soon became a huge bruise and it looked like I was wearing a purple sleeve for the rest of my trip. : ( I'm still recovering and it still hurts. The doctor said there aren't any broken bones, but there are three lumps that really hurt, so it might turn out there was a hairline fracture. This happend the week of June 2-8. Thank you, Nice Lifeguard Lady, for giving me an ice pack! It helped tremendously!

I shattered my leg here three months ago and had three surgeries to repair it. I am a local resident who knew the beach and am STILL in a wheelchair. I knew the beach was dangerous and thought I was smart enough to avoid injury. It just happens so fast. Go swimming somewhere else.

This is the type of picture perfect beach you imagine when you dream of coming to Hawaii! The sand is soft and golden, and the water is various shades of blue and aqua. This is a rough beach with crashing waves and a strong undertow. They do not recommend snorkeling here, but it is fun to wade in and just walk the shoreline. We arrived about 10 AM on a Wednesday and the parking lot still had plenty of spaces and an attendant there to help direct you. There was a small parking fee which then allowed you to access big beach and little beach. In order to get to the black sand beach (there are three beaches in McKenna State Park), you do have to re-park down the street. But big beach is by far the main attraction. There are life guards

tres belle plage de sable blanc avec à côté une petite plage nudiste après une petite escalade … mais la honte est ce parking public devenu payant à 15$ une voiture avec une personne puis 20 $ pour 2 personnes !!!! de 08:00 à 24 heures alors que la porte du parking ferme à 07 pm . les touristes sont devenus des vaches à lait de l’ état en plus des taxes qu’ils payent pour tout ( nourriture , logement essence etc … ) merci au Gouverneur de l’Etat

I just shattered my leg in the waves at this beach. Do not swim. My whole trip was the hospital and I’ll need multiple surgeries to fix my leg.

We went in December, usually in the afternoon, and the waves were the strongest out of all the beaches we visited (not including the north surfing ones of course).

Hello, we visited in April and there were definitely waves. Not surfing waves by any means, but boogie board waves for sure. The under tow was pretty good.
