Rewarding
2020年5月 • 家庭
As a youngster in the fifties (yeah I know) my dad took the ohana out to the hat for a day of pole fishing. The catch was minimal but the fun was unforgettable. Those days it was easy wading at low tide even for a little squirt like me. Times have changed and the best thing is to check with locals on the water conditions and weather. It’s a trip for the time of your life.

Une jolie petite île dans Kaneohe Bay, accessible en canoë ou en kayak.
Si on ne tente pas la traversée, on découvre ce chapeau chinois depuis la rive.

YOU MAY KNOW IT AS "CHINAMAN'S HAT"
2019年9月
I revisited this small island view from Kualoa Regional Park picnic/beach area. The island view is quite well known among locals and those lucky tourists who learn about it on a tour or otherwise. I was fortunate to have someone drive me to such places; a special long time friend. The best way to see sights like this is by taking a drive along Kamehameha Highway (King Kam Hwy).

You'll find this location not too far once you cross over from Waikiki on the H1 (Pali) or H3 Highway. Then, get it on the Kam Hwy. It's basically the only main highway that takes you around the island and back to Waikiki (heading north).

This is a one of the main stops you should make.

Swim out, hike, swim back, tired.

I have been to Mokolii island several times during vacations to Oahu. Visits were from May to October over that past ten years to the present. I like to swim out to the litttel island. Is is possible to wade out during low tide, but at some points the water can still be over your head. The calmest, and safest approach is from the left side of the island. The water is warmer, bluer, and much more shallow. There is a lifeguard station further down the beach nearer to the right side of the Mokolii as you are looking out to the island. The water there is much deeper, darker blue and the currents are stronger. The lifeguards advise not to try to reach Mokolii from that side. I tried it once and they came out to tell me so. I prefer to just swim out as it is faster than wading and I am an experienced, strong swimmer. I recommend wearing water shoes because the island itself is not sandy. Is is rocky as you approach the coastline and the shore has numerous small, sharp pebbles. The climb to the top of the island is not easy but doable for adults. And probably not advisable for small children. The view at the top is spectacular. I have been told that the area is a nursery for tiger sharks after breeding season but have not seen any myself. It's a great activity while on Oahu and a terrific workout. It will take a few hours, at least 3, probably more. If you don't plan to swim out to Mokolii, the nearby beach is beautiful, it's a state park with restrooms and family friendly.

Kayaking and hike/rock-climbing
2018年6月 • 夫妻情侣
We rented kayaks from Beachtime rentals. Due to commercial restrictions, we could not pick them up from Kualoa Beach park. We parked at the ranch and walked across the street to a smaller beach (see photo attached for start location. We started our 1.6 mile out and back kayak trip around 11am and the high tide was coming in and we thought the swells were kinda big but overall manageable. It took about 50 mins to paddle out (and 20 mins to return based on wind and currents). Once we arrived on the inward side of the island on the very small beach we got our sneakers out of the dry bag for our hike up.

The path is very much a loose dirt and there is not much for hand holds. Once you pass the phase 1 of the dirt “slide” you will navigate/crawl though some trees with low clearance. Phase 3 is what I would rock climbing. This section weaned some of the group based on the sheer climb. As long as you go slow you should be able to go up and left to reach the summit.

Great 360 view from the top. Coming down was a bit slow and hard to see where to put your feet. Overall would do again!!

Total trip time was 3 hours. We then visited Waiahole Poi Factory for lunch.

Amazing coastal and mountain view point.

Lovely area, but sad to see all the beach erosion Be careful to lock your car and don't leave anything visible in the cabin as there is a high rate of car break-ins in places like this around the island.

Kayak to Chinamans Hat!
2016年3月 • 独自旅游
First things first, you need to be able to kayak to reach this island. Second, its nice. There are tons of tidal pools just teeming with life. You can walk around most of the island. The hill is climbable, but challenging. To do it, you'll want to land on the west side of the island. And go straight up feom there. Just remember, pack out what you pack in!
