Great place to camp, hike and fish. Small Mouth Bass are catch and release as they continue to improve this park. Trout are stocked in the Spring and Fall.
The campsites are large, but lack electricity and showers. That's not all bad. It keeps camping for real campers. If you cannot haul water or need a bathroom to shower-this place is not for you.
The camp host at this time was a real jerk. Little man that probably never made much of himself. Most of the time he wasn't around, but the ground staff are more than helpful and did what the host was supposed to do. Really great guys!

The State of Illinois is mostly flat farmland except for the Shawnee National Forest in the deep south and the hilly Apple River Canyon State Park in the northwest. Located east/southeast of Galena, near Stockton, Apple River Canyon State Park is a 297-acre land and water preserve that offers hiking, fishing, hunting and camping to visitors. Founded in 1932 by botanist Herman Silas Pepoon, the property has been expanded over the years to 1,907 acres of land to protect much of an 8 1/2-mile long canyon on the Apple River. It is part of the Driftless Area of Illinois, a region that was bypassed by the last ice age, a glacial sweep that ironed out hills and filled valleys in other parts of the state but left this area of Jo Daviess County unscratched. The Apple River, which flows through the town of Hanover on its way to the Mississippi River, once flowed eastward into the Pecatonica River. But it reversed its original course and began to flow southwest to the Mississippi River. The result is a deep canyon, part of which is preserved in the park. A visit to Apple River Canyon State Park wouldn't be complete without a stop at Apple River Fort, near Elizabeth.

This park is not that big, but has some good picnic spots along the river. Some people were in the river cooling off and having a good time. Saw a few people jogging or biking through the park as well. A nice and refreshing place to relax.

Apple River Canyon park is on the small side. You can do all the trails in about 3 hours. So if getting steps is your goal, this isn't a good choice. The trails are listed out and back, not really any loop trails. The River trail was nice as it followed alongside the river. We climbed down to walk in the rocks as the water level is pretty low. The do nd of the flowing water was nice. Pine Ridge trail is the only loop and is a but once is enough.

We always look for nature trails and places to get out and get away from it all. I googled this park. It is small and relatively easy to get around on the six or so trails. It has some nice bluffs and the wooded area is beautiful. Very few people are there so it is like having the park to yourself. It is not spectacular but it is worth visiting.

This is a nice park for hiking. There are 4 trails. Sunset goes in a circle. Primrose has many stairs. Pine Ridge has several pine trees to go by. Tower Rock is my favorite. Climbing the rock is a real adventure if you are up for it. I really like this park. It is free and no entrance fee. There is nice picnicing and I think if you camp there it is only about $8-10 for the night. If you do not like camping you can stay in nearby Stockton at the hotel. You can pretty much get a day worth or fun for next to nothing. I'd recommend this for a nice day if you like the outdoors, hiking, and the weather is good. Enjoy!

We camped here one night. The campground is wooded and quiet. Very few other people were here while we were. Sites, tables, fire rings, and pit toilets are all that is supplied but for only $8.
There is a nice picnic ground and some hiking trails, but little else.
The river runs in a narrow valley but it is hardly a 'canyon'.

I loved the history in this remote park in northern Illinois. The stagecoaches used to go through this area, a mill and town sprung up. At one point two rival stagecoach companies waged virtual war against each other with propaganda, lying and physical violence. The town has faded away. The Apple River has carved out some beautiful cliffs and flood plains. Nice little hikes.

We went to the state park because of the Apple river Canyon falls----and found they aren't there---it's maybe about 5 miles away---then when you find them--they are actually a spillway of a levee--and they are ok--but nothing worth the drive.

Definitely check weather and have a backup plan. With the snow started now, it's difficult to know what the travel and trail conditions will be.

I'm not sure how they would accurately measure this - there's no "entrance gate" or anything like that, and a couple of public roads cut through it.
