Fanuel Mateja is the best guide you can wish for. He is a kind man who knows the animals and their habits, loves his country and is wise. When you want to go a bit further than the ordinary safari there is no travelling in Tanzania without bumpy roads. They are a metafor for life in general really. So if you’re looking for beauty, adventure, a lot wildlife and life itself, you are in very good hands with Fanuel. For our trip with our grown up kids he made a beautiful arrangement with travelling days, wildlife days and resting days with hotels that were fine and hotels that were amazing. This trip brought us closer together as a family and we are really grateful.

We had a amazing time, My family and I traveld across the country with Fanuel. Fanuel himself is an incredibel guid and someone we where glad to guid us through the country. He is smart, sharp and very frendly. Even when thing's didn't go as smoothly as they usuall did Fanuel was quick the get it fixed. He know's the country very well and knows how to get around which was very nice to know.
The trip was amazing aswell, Fanuel knew got us very nice places to stay and went out of his way to give us a very special experience. Like sleeping with hippo's nearby or sailing next to dolphins. His planning and timing in the trip was nice aswell, we didn't stay at places for to long but also got plenty of time to rest and experince the places he took us. Overall an incredible trip and experience.

We travelled two weeks in Tanzania with breakdown Safari's. Such an amazing experience! We visited the national parks of Mikumi, Udzungwa, Katavi and Gombe.
Everything was super well arranged, meals, places to stay and Fanuel Mateja is an excellent guide. Calm, extremely friendly, experienced with eyes for details and a great knowledge about the wildlife and parks. We will never forget this trip. It was adventurous, we saw and experienced so many thing and felt so welcome. The planning and organization were perfect.

From the moment Fanuel picked us up at the airport we had the impression we had booked a superior safari guide. About 6 hours later and through the following day we had the very unique opportunity to be able to confirm this...
We were about an hour out from our camp at the Selous: bridge under water, road blocked by a cement truck. It was a matter of minutes before we were onboard a canoe on our way to another safari car which Fanuel hired out on the other side. Against all odds, we still made it to our boat safari that evening! Fanuel + his awesome truck, didn't. But he made sure to set us up with someone else for our full day game drive the next day - all perfectly coordinated right from his truck/the bridge. This, we thought, was the greatest advantage of having booked a guy that is his own boss and knows the whole town.
Well, turns out, when you get lost off-roading in the Selous then stuck in a mongoose hole for the greater part of a day, you realize there are several other advantages to booking with Breakdown Safari.
1- not all Safari cars are built the same - Fanuel's car, which he gets serviced after every safari, was significantly more comfy than the other car (leg room is amazing).
2- nothing stands between Fanuel and you having the vacation of a lifetime - he is extremely resourceful.
3- this guy is a pro at handling all things "breakdown".
Luckly Fanuel was able to get across the bridge so he could come to our rescue! From the moment he pulled us out of that hole and we rushed to see a lion show beyond our wildest dreams, and until the end of our trip 10 days later, we were incredibly happy with our choice of safari company! We can't wait until we are back for our next adventure :)

We just completed 2 nights 3 days Mikumi NP with Fanuel from Breakdown.
We had 3 children travelling with us (6, 8 n 11) and all enjoyed the drive from Dar to Mikumi.
Breakdown is personable, professional and unbelievable knowledge on wild life including bird life. Fanuel engaged with us early once we requested a quote, he was by the far the most reasonable priced with the a great camp site ( Bastian) and very good food.
We would have no hesitation to recommend Fanuel and Breakdown.
His vehicle is comfortable and spacious.
Thank you Fanuel for our families best holiday ever!

La straordinaria bellezza del parco e la professionalità di Fanuel hanno reso il nostro primo Safari un’esperienza indimenticabile.
Fanuel è un ragazzo molto simpatico che consce benissimo il parco e farà di tutto per farti vedere il più possibile con la sua jeep. Noi eravamo in due e, avendo pochissimo tempo a disposizione, abbiamo optato per il Safari nel selous di 3 giorni e due notti. La struttura che ci ha ospitato era pulitissima ed il cibo ottimo. Durante il Safari siamo riusciti a vedere antilopi, facoceri, zebre, elefanti, giraffe, ippopotami, coccodrilli, scimmie, vari tipi di uccelli, leoni (da vicinissimo) e i rarissimi licaoni....grazie Fanuel :)

Our trip with Fanuel/Breakdown Safaris was absolutely exceptional. We did a 6 day safari with Fanuel we went to Selous and Mikumi ending in Dar Es Salaam.
All the accommodation, food and activities through out our trip were so good and had something for everyone. During the booking process Fanuel gave us lots of options and worked with us to plan the trip out.
The safari drives were amazing, Fanuel has such a vast amount of knowledge of the areas and wild life and also a passion for what he does which makes every game drive a pleasure. He took in to account what animals we were most interested in and made sure we saw everything in the time we had.
Even driving between through the country is great fun on the crazy bumpy roads see all the villages and the countryside.
Our trip started out badly with our luggage not arriving, Fanu was a hero and spent the next 2 days getting our luggage sent out to us in the bush which was an experience in its self. Without Fanu this would have been a horrific experience but he took all the stress away.
He clearly loves what he does and it shows. We really had the best time and i couldn't rate Fanu and Breakdown Safari any higher our trip was truly exceptional and a once in a life time experience.
We really loved our time with breakdown and Fanu and can't thank him enough for the experience.

We were looking for a short and affordable safari. Fanuel replied fast and kindly, so the booking was done fast and uncomplicated. Everything about the trip was well planned and organised so we could fully enjoy the 2day safari.
Fanuel was always very polite and kind and due to his wide range of knowledge about the animals and the nature we could also learn a lot from him. We all really enjoyed his company also while playing some cards and chatting in the evening. What I also want to point out is the fact that he is driving very safely and with a good endurance. We would definitely book breakdownsafaris again. Thank you for making our first safari unforgettable Fanuel!!!

Just back from a wonderful safari with Fanuel. Like others before us, we found him through the excellent (and entirely deserved) reviews on TripAdvisor. This is a very personalised and expert service from someone who really knows and cares about the wildlife, and his clients. . The passion for his work shines through and his English is excellent. His ‘packages’ are tailor made and very reasonably priced – he takes time to discuss individual budgets and requirements.
We did the Selous, Udzunwa and finally Mikumi circuit – involving a proper road trip in the middle that also allowed us to see the local villages and witness the changes afoot in rural Tanzania. Selous was definitely our favourite of those options – open, uncrowded and with the glorious Rufiji River running through. Wonderful bird life and hippos, crocodiles and other fauna to see and snap at our own pace. Fanuel looked after us very well, and his ‘truck’ became our temporary home for 5 days, equipped with books on the wildlife, power supply and even travel mugs for the morning we had to make an early start. Given the local road conditions and generally more ‘relaxed ‘approach to road safety, his driving is responsible and reassuring.
Friendly, warm and intelligent, Fanuel is an easy presence and pleasure to travel with, remaining calm and responsive when the inevitable little problems of travel arise. He looked after us very well, even enlisting a friend to recuperate an item we had forgotten at a previous Lodge, and right down to putting us on the ferry to Zanzibar. We would unreservedly recommend him.

Hi there,
We used to do these day trips before, but we came to realise it is not safe for the clients, driver and car. Think about it, a drive from Dar es salaam to Mikumi National Park is about 7hrs one way, which means it's 14hrs round trip, you still need some time for game drive. It's a total of about 20hrs of driving, do you think this is safe? What I can advice you is to do at least 1 night/2days.

We stayed at Upeppo Garden which is a guest house in Dar Es Salem. It is on the ocean and has 5 rooms with extremely personalized service. Breakdown Safaris arranged that as well as our flight and a great safari. I would highly recommend that you contact Kathy Phinney at Breakdown for assistance with your trip.
