Poorly maintained with some exhibits missing this museum still tells the harrowing story of part of the last century. Worth a quick visit and, unusually, free.

Excellent and very important small museum and insight into events that inform much of Ethiopia today. Curb your expectations: this is not a well-funded, glitzy museum, but rather a more shoestring effort to transmit to the world a tale that is not popular with many state authorities. There was a FANTASTIC English speaking guide there, and we benefited so much from his context. This was very reminiscent of the Tuol Sleng museum in Phnom Penh, also chronicling death and atrocities and heroic resistance. A visit need not take longer than 40 minutes--and you can then head uphill to the lovely Addis Ababa museum just up the steps from it. Highly recommended.

This is a sad reminder of a tragic episode in the history of Ethiopia and of the world.
The simplicity of the museum is effective in stilling one so that one learns and remembers.

My heart dropped looking at the picture, reading the stories and what happened back then, how many lives have been sacrificed for this generation to have the freedom we have right now. I am so thankful & grateful, for all people who fought for us!!

I m a world traveler (60 countries so far) and don t like tourist activities, but search for experiences with locals anywhere i go. I was expecting a more sombre outlook from a chapter in the Ethiopian history but the museum seemed more like an afterthought than a means to convey national sentiments. But worth a visit if you are at the famous Meskel sqaure nearby.

Small dusty museum with broken windows. Photos are great but with poor explanations. Seems to be a very neglected place which is unfortunate given its unique place in the history of Ethiopia.

I am living in Addis and have visited twice this year. A sobering part of history and well worth a visit. However, since some disorder after Ramadan in mid 2022 the museum has be significantly damaged, has not been repaired and as of yesterday (Mid July 2022) is still closed.

I have been informed by Ethiopian colleagues that the museum is open daily from 08:30 to 17:00.
Its really worth a visit.

Our visit with a guide lasted less than an hour. Of course it can be longer if you spend more time at each panel.

The museum is free but you can drop something in the donation box placed by the exit.

Hi there seem to be two venues. Which one is better from serenity and tourist attraction point of view. Also there seems to be a indian restaurant near one point...can you elaborate pro and cons of both venues...is room tarrif same . I will be booking through expedia

There is only one Red Terror Museum. It is near a big area where most of the buses are. There is also a restaurant nearby.
The main museum is the best to see. They do not charge an entry fee. But you are asked to make a donation. At the end of the tour to the Red Terror Museum and to the tour guide. The suggested donation is 200 birr for the tour or $10 usd and 100 to 200 birr for the tour guide. It is better to have to tour guide because you get so much more out of the museum.
In terms of restaurants. Not far away are many other restaurants....so of course if you go to a restaurant near the museum. It might be like most other high traffic areas where they charge more. But please keep in mind the prices in Addis Ababa are not high. So if it is a matter of time and seeing more for that day. Then you are better off going to a restaurant nearby. So that your day can be more full.
I am not sure about the second Red Terror Museum you are referring to.
