We had a wonderful stay at NamibRand Family Hideout. We were 3 vehicles camping at the Jupiter campsite. The amenities were clean and well looked after. A spectacular setting in the desert. Wonderful game all around us, we even experienced a sandstorm, thank goodness the campsite had sturdy awnings to protect us. The stars were beautiful, what a great space to experience the beautiful skies.

The NamibRand Nature reserve is one of the few remaining truly unspoilt places on earth. It is utterly beautiful, and the solitude is a deeply spiritual experience. The staff are charming and helpful, and we express special thanks for Cornelius who gave us such excellent advice and help. We stayed at the family hideaway, as a party of three, and saw wonderful game: giraffe, gemsbok, Zebra, Cape Fox, Black Jackals, and many different birds. The park is pristine - there is literally not a speck of human pollution visible anywhere. Driving around it (please follow their 4x4 instructions) is a unique experience. To walk in the pan under a full moon, and braai under the bright Namibian stars in the quiet evening was a wonderful experience and great privilege. We felt a sense of gratitude that the descendants of the original family felt generous enough to resurrect and share their old home and allow others to experience what they grew up with. It was a wonderful, amazing, uplifting experience. Difficult to convey in words. Good for the soul.

We crossed this huge private reserve close to Namib leaving Sesriem, the landscapes are also breathtaking! The ochre colors are fascinating, the very varied relief offers a magnificent postcard all along the track. We did not stay inside but just next door where we could witness a beautiful sunset.

Peu de touriste le long des pistes. Sur les conseils d'un photographe, nous avons fait un crochet dans le Namibrand. Quelle bonne décision nous avons prise ! Les paysages sont à couper le souffle, différents du nord du pays. Les animaux gambadent sur de vastes étendues désertiques/prairies, un peu de désert au sable rouge et un peu de relief. Le calme, la beauté. A faire lors de son séjour !

This was one of the most colorful part of our trip. If you are a photographer, I'd say take a whole day, because you'll be stopping a lot. The colors, the panorama. Delightful.
We also came across 3 dudes on bicycles. Which is absolutely crazy. Especially due to the temperatures.

This is a definite place to put on your itinerary if travelling through Namibia. We camped at the Jupiter Campsite and would be my recommendation. If you want to see Fairy Circles then I recommend the Dune drive. Dune-boarding (boards provided at an extra cost) can be done at your own time and leisure. My recommendation is minimum 3 night stay to fully appreciate the experience. We were fortunate to see Gemsbok (Oryx) come to the waterhole located close to the camp. I will point out that although the reserve is a designated Dark Sky reserve conditions may determine the visibility. There was quite a lot of dust in the air during our visit and whilst the stars were spectacular you will have other opportunities in Namibia to view "dark skies". However, the conscious effort to reduce artificial lighting and maintain the dark skies designation is a huge achievement. We would certainly return to NamibRand if our travels take us back to Namibia one day. The staff were fantastic and very attentive and supportive.

Die Namibwüste und so das Namib Rand Nature Reserver biten unglaubliche Weiten mit herrlichen Ausblicken auf alte Dünen, ein herrliches Farbenspiel und mit Glück auf einigen Antilopen am Wegesrand. Ein must see.

Schitterende vergezichten, knallende kleuren oranje tegen een spetterend blauwe lucht, bergzebra’s en andere dieren kom je hier tegen. Het is een must voor wie in Namibië rondreist.

A photographers paradise. A wide spectrum of colours ,from the mountain peaks, the rocky outcrops, onto the distant dunes. From sunrise to sunset the vistas are breath taking.

I'm so glad I came across your review. We want to drive from Luderitz to just north of Sesriem and saw there was a possibility of driving through the NamibRand Park but then lots of mentions of the private concessions in the Park and no mention of whether you could drive through without being part of a private tour.
Did you have to pay to enter the Park? I'm hoping things haven't changed since your visit. This sounds like a drive too good to miss.

I am sorry not being in a position to answer your question..... You will have to go directly on Google and check the offers you can find. There are camping places but not many. I didn't camp when I visited NamibRand !

Can you drive to and from Windhoek in one day and see the NamibRand Nature Reserve. Are there any hostel/hotel accommodation there or is only tented accommodation?

1) Yes it's possible if you are an absolute sucker for driving endless hours nonstop. No it's NOT recommended and no it's NOT worth it. To "really see" the Nature Reserve you have to go on (at least) one drive with them in a 4X4 as driving around privately is not permitted.
2) Only tented, but very comfortable and cannot be faulted.
3) Answered although not asked: Don't go in summer!!
