A good place for art lovers. There are works from different artists on different media. Talking with the artists was also very enlightening.

We made the mistake of going there on the way in from the airport after an overnight flight. It looks like a very worthwhile place but most of the artists work into the night and thus only one or two of the artists were open when we arrived at 10:30 am.

Despite not many of the studios being open this was one of the most amazing places I've ever been. Super bohemian, off the beaten track and slightly run down but a million miles off the standard tourist trail and market with some of the most amazing artwork I've seen outside of a museum. Sure you can probably bargin hard but I don't know why you would when you can buy very high quality art at a fraction of the price you would in the west. If you love art and are looking for something interesting to do in Dakar this is a must see. As other people have pointed out this is not a chaotic market with standard ware but a truly unique and wonderful place!

Saturday morning 27th May and this was the first stop on our all day Art & Culture tour of the City of Dakar.
On arrival we were welcomed by a delightful lady, Kane, her personality was as bright and vibrant as her long flowing colourful robe. Throughout the tour her enthusiasm and love of art bubbled over and was refreshing and infectious.
Before we set off on the Tour, we learnt that the Village was set up in 1977 by the artist El Hadji Sy. The commune, today. is home to 53 studios where artists live and and work in their studios or open spaces.
Hadji Sy believed that art, in whatever form or material, was a personal expression and not an academic subject. His ideology was supported by the Formet President Leopold Sedar Senghor. The Gallery in the Village, which opened in July 2019 is named in honour of the former President (reviewed separately).
The Gallery was the first place we visited where we saw artworks created by the artists. We saw a variety of pieces that were created using many mediums including glass, metal, acrylics, bronze and textiles.
Our very knowledgeable Guide, Kane, told us about the Artists, what material the piece was crafted it and the artist's interpretation.
Outside the Gallery we walked along the open spaces covered by mango and carob trees. There were so many stunning artworks amongst the trees. Around the open spaces were the neat rows of the studios, we did enter a few and met the artists.
The last piece we were shown was a life-sized metal sculpture of a horse. The artist scoured the streets for materials, he believes it is not recycling but the materials have be given a new direction. Our Guide was the artist's granddaughter and she did sn excellent job showing us around and promoting the Village.
We were permitted to take photographs both inside and outside the Galley, but they were for personal use. The photos posted in my reviews are solely to promote the Village, the Gallery and the amazing experience, nothing else.

I really love art so it was cool to see. It was empty on a Saturday and the locals said it is most lively during the week.

Oh this is a must see! I enjoyed it immensely and the tour was much better than going to African markets.

for art lovers, this is a real gem nestled in the middle of nowhere! A district of Dakar.Prés of the road leading to the airport. You will meet magicians of color and creativity. Several shops, not paying mine, and behind their doors of treasure without names. I met the great master Daouda Ndiaye in his den of creation. I met the talented Baba Ly and his master paintings. I met Gibril, and his NOn metal works recycled. He insists. He wants to be the starting point, and so and so....
