The Takin is Bhutan's national animal. It is a strange-looking looking animal, which looks like a cross between a goat and a bison. It usually lives at 4000+ meters. The takins in this preservation area came down from the high mountains some years before due to lack of food, and have stayed ever since.
The preserve also hosts some Bhutanese deer and various protected birds.
The preserve makes for a pleasant visit.

Lucky for us, we are able to see Bhutan’s national animal, Takin, up close as the enclosure is pretty big. You will also see Sambar deer with the Takins. Only the first couple of enclosures have the animals. The enclosure at the back is totally empty so it seemed to be a waste of time walking one round in the park. There is toilet here.

The Takin has been designated as the national animal of Bhutan and besides Bhutan, the Takin is also found in Tibet (China), north-west Myanmar and north-east India - primarily the areas around the Himalayan Mountains. Prior to this area being designated the "Takin Preserve", this area was once a Royal "mini" zoo for Bhutan's Royal family. However, some years ago the king of Bhutan had decided that the Takins should not be caged-in and needs to be set "free". After being set free, the Takins were so "domesticated" that they did not want to leave the general area of the "zoo" and Thimphu city. So the Bhutan government had decided to create the "Takin Preserve" to protect the animals.
The Takin Preserve is located about 15 minutes north-west from Thimphu city center. The Preserve grounds are clean and well preserved and there is a small visitor center at the entrance to the Preserve. Besides the Takin animals, the Preserve is also home for a small heard of Sambar deer and a few other animals.
I have read that the morning hours is the best time to see the Takins in the Preserve because that is the time they graze near the fence line. However, on the morning that we had toured the Preserve, all of the visible Takins had decided to stay away from the fence line and were only visible from a distance. So if you are intending to take photos of the Takins, a good camera with zoom lens is a must.
Overall, the Takin Preserve was quite an interesting stop - especially since this was the first time that I have ever seen a "Takin" - even after traveling through Tibet (China), Myanmar and India.

Takin is an animal found between Bhutan and Tibet. We were fortunate that the animals were close to the gate where we could see them up close. We learned no one has heard any noise from the Takin. It's a mystery what they sound like.

Takin is a rare species- looks like a combination of Goat head and body of ox/buffalo. There is a Bhutanese story on this creation.Specially went to see and take photos for my grandson Shiv, who has a good knowledge of animals and was very keen to know.

Takin is the national animal of Bhutan and also an endangered animal. The enclosures are clean and they are feed well. It’s a birdwatchers paradise. The entry fee is Rs 300/- and no concession for students which haunted me a bit.

It has only one encloser for takin which is their national animal. It's has few takin which are visible from distance. Considering rs. 300 entry price it's highly overpriced.
If you are tight on schedule you can easily skip this. It's not worth spending.

We were super excited to visit this place .The reserve is beautifuly located and landscaped. However it's difficult to see the takin up close and get some clicks.The only other visible animal were deers. They have beautiful wood carved chairs to relax and gaze around.The kid enjoyed walking on trails

It you want to see one of nature's cutest odd looking mammals, the Takin Takes the cake. Shy, stocky, curious and beautiful in a really strange way....this is the place to glimpse them at their best.

The Takin is the national animal of Bhutan and is rather hard to find. The Takin Preserve at Motithang keeps the animals in a protected environment, but is not really very friendly to visitors. I visited there and did not have a good experience.
To begin with, the entrance is Ng 300 per head, which is way too expensive. Still, I paid the money to get a chance to see the takin! Unfortunately, that was not possible. All I got to see were a few deer and the takins were apparently in hiding! A long walk and nothing at the end of it.
It was a very frustrating and time-consuming experience, made worse by the fact that facilities for visitors were next to nothing! It's definitely not a place I would advise to visit; there are many better places in Thimphu.

Hi! Could anyone tell me if there is anywhere in Bhutan where one can see the Takin "in the wild" instead of at the "preserve"? Any chance of seeing this Gnu-looking creature at any of the National Parks in Bhutan?

Agree with previous replies, rarely spotted in the wild and only in remote areas. Getting to Bumthang was a hairy enough journey, but travelling further north in the hope of an unlikely encounter will be even worse, and most likely a wasted trip. In the reserve you can get a better view and when we visited one came right up to the fence. Not pretty but seemed very sweet. Don't know if I'd like to meet a wild one up close though.
