One of the oldest Dzongs in Bhutan and of particular significance because of its association with Shabdrung the man who unified Bhutan. It is small and very personal.

This Dzong was apparently the first one built in the 17th century by the Master who first united Bhutan. It is still an impressive structure. The small temple inside the keep is in daily use, and therefore is laid out for prayers, unlike any other dzongs.

This was our first tourist attraction visit on arriving in Bhutan it is worth the stop and wander around. Our guide Kingy was most informative. It is the first fortress to have been built in 1629 and it is the oldest serving complete Dzong (type of Bhutan fortress). It is now being used as a monastery and is currently home to 30-40 monks.
