Stayed in Quanhua temple in lions head mountain
loads of mosquitos in the room, no monks at the temple it’s more of a temple hotel. The food is different paid for by donation If walking up the mountain be prepared for lots of stairs. To get to the temple Only 4 buses go there a day. Bus 5701. The rooms are about £25 well worth going!

I was pleasantly surprised hiking the Lion's Head Mountain trail - it was much better than I expected. We took the bus from Zhunan TRA station to the Trails historic entrance. There's also a possibility to go directly to the Lion's Head Mountain visitor center when taking the bus from Hsinchu HSR station but I'd recommend the full trail starting from the historic trail entrance. Climbing up to Quanhau temple was nice... From Quanhau temple on we decided to go onto Lion's Head Mountain itself (going up to the highest point) and then continuing downwards the rest of the trail. Nice half day trip - try to combine it with Nanzhuang before heading back to Zhunan. Lots of food and eateries in Nanzhuang for hungry hikers :D

We hadn't planned to visit the free to access Lion's Head Mountain Scenic Area before we visited Taiwan, however, we had some spare time towards the end of our trip and were literally driving past the area. We were so pleased that we did call in, however, as it is so beautiful with some relatively easy to access walks.
But given we were visiting on a Sunday, we decided to park near the stunning Quanhua Temple (which was quiet and peaceful) and walk the historic trail towards the visitors' centre (which was extremely busy). The walk is well signposted and although there is plenty of shade, humidty was high when we visited, so lots of water recommended.

Shihtoushan: Lion's head mountain.

Lion's Head Mountain is some distance from the nearby town of Miaoli. We came in a winter weekday and this place had very few visitors. On a holiday or a saint's birthday, this place may have a lot worshipers. Interesting enough is that this mountain is the location of temples of both Taoism and Buddhism. The Taoism temple (勸化堂)is at half way up the mountain and the Buddhism temple is at the top. The trail is well maintained and paved as stone slab steps. Although we did not count the steps, the walk is relatively easy as one can stop, rest in many places for viewing the pavilions and scenery of the valley below. A tourist does not have to be religious to appreciate the architectures of the temples. The hike itself is a mind cleansing exercise since both Taoism and Buddhism are not really religions but philosophies. The temples are in fact places for the commoners to conduct certain formalities of praying. The way Chinese built these temples is that they pay attention to the Feng Shui -- literally the geologies and position of the temples that they are surrounded by mountains and they don't feel windy. On a winter day, we had light jackets and was very comfortable. Overall, it is a very nice place for an outing. For foreign tourists, this will be a place to appreciate the local culture.

Do you know if the shuttle up to the top of Lion's Head is in service now? I read it was discontinued. I'm confused of how long it takes to walk and how difficult the trail/climb is if it is no longer available. Thank you.
