its not everyone's cup of tea but for me the overnight train trip from Bangkok to Chiang Mai was a highlight, starting at the ultra modern main station in Bangkok and arriving here at this quaint station in the morning. We went second class a/c which was fine (no need to book first class and anyway there is only one first class carriage). A adventure that will live long in the memory. A tip - book the lower berth as the upper ones have no window which would diminish the experience quite a lot!

Chiang Mai station is beautiful, with many restaurants and shops, with good quality meals and products available, at good prices
We went there for our trip to Bangkok on the No. 8 train. We had a light breakfast but, unfortunately, did not buy any provisions for the trip, as reading previous reports on the train trip food was provided 3 times.
Update on the service. The carriages lived up to my expectations. Now getting a little aged, built in 1997, that said it started well. The views from the train are spectacular, the a/c worked well, but there is no need to wrap up like an Eskimo. For me I travelled in a T shirt and shorts with no problem
The down side was that, as reported, there are no extras on the train any more. You can buy pot noodles, and order curries or dried rice from the steward to be delivered from a station down the line. If they remember. Our order got forgotten twice, so nothing to eat, bar a pot noodle. The trip took 11 HR 30 mins and ended in the dark, so by then boredom had really set in as well as hunger. Then finally the train stopped outside of Bangkok at the new station with few, if any, guidance notices in English as to how to get into the city. We eventually found a shuttle bus to the old station, so hopped on that . Being hungry, we hoped to find at least street food around the new station. None, so off to the old station now having no passengers, and again no street vendors, or restaurants near by.
We went by taxi to Chiang Mai, 9.5hrs add our lunch stop, and 2 convenience stops 10.5hrs in total, a very pleasant experience for seeing the countryside, and at 5,000 baht affordable.
I certainly know which option I will choose next time.

What a surprise to find this lovely train station. Staff were very helpful and nothing was to much trouble for them. The little restaurant had nice Thia food and there was a little store next door with cheap buys. We caught a train to Bangkok and had lots of luggage and the staff allowed us to take trolley to nearby hotel to load luggage.

We were taking an overnight express train to Bangkok. This is an old quaint neatly maintained station. Not very crowded. Good restaurants closeby and some in the station also.

Came in from Bangkok after an overnight 14 hours train ride.
The station is small compared to Bangkok Hua Lamphon, but it does not lack in its charm.
The Clock Tower roof seem to have Burmese influence.

After touch down at Don Muang Airport, we checked into Amari Don Muang. As instructed, we left our belongings at the hotel and headed straight to the train ticket office to collect our tickets. We booked the second class air-con carriage and the ride was comfortable. We left on the first train and did not expect Breakfast, Lunch and tea break snacks were provided on board. The scenary along the way was varied and in between towns provided some unique views only Thailand can offer. The sraff was polite and helpful. The only grouse is some inconsiderate passengers had unnecessarily loud voices during their conversations in the cabin. A set of ear plugs and reading materials help us to ignore the noise and interruptions. Chiang Mai Railway station is neat and is served by many taxis and it's convenient to get to your hotel from the Railway Station. Appropriate signs give the necessary directions so you won't be lost.

Lovely people work there and it's a beautiful old building. Train is pretty slow but a lot of fun.loung and restrooms are dirty but there is a small convenience store there.

This is a refreshing change to Bangkok Station. Has a rural feel to it even though ChiangMai is a big city. Plenty of the usual snacks and drinks available. Alwyas managed to find somewhere to sit

There are trains from Chiang Mai to Lampang. Trains: 8, 10, 14, 52, 102 and 408 I believe but double check which train it is you need.

There is no first class for the trip during the day. I took the day trip and it was quite pleasant and also safe, passing through the beautiful cities & field. Tickets on line ? Not so sure, but you can check “ train from Bangkok to Chiangmai”. You need to buy snacks & drinks for the trip as there is no selling of food during the 10 hours :) Enjoy your trip :)
