Like the music but unfortunately it was playing on a tape recorder on the table. Two young women stood nearby as we peered at a number of photographs and a piano. Nothing else to see. Only one room available plus an area at the top of the stairs with some posters. In a neighbouring room (which we weren’t allowed into) three people were drinking tea and conducting some kind of business. Nobody explained anything (in English or any other language). Disappointing. Definitely not worth 5 manats each.

The museum is located in one of the many narrow alleys in the Old City, go up the stairs, open the first door and continue going up the stairs and knock at that door. Mr. Rustam (?) who takes care of the museum's web page and also speaks good English related about the life of Vagif Mustafazadeh, a genius Jazz composer who only later in his short life (he died of a heart attack when he was 39) could play his compositions in public (only from the late 60s onwards it was allowed to play Jazz. He founded a band with 4 women, won the first price at the International Competition of Jazz composers in Monaco in 1978. He died in 1979 and left his wife and 2 daughters who like him went into music, the older one with classic music and the younger one with Jazz, both live in Europe (France/Germany). His mother, a music teacher, his wife and the 2 daughters lived in 2 small rooms, in fact the museum with its 2 rooms occupies more area than the family had available. Entrance fee incl. English speaking guidance is 5 Manat.

Vagif Mustafazade was the man who invented a new Azerbaijani form of music. He fused jazz style with the traditional Azerbaijani folk music known as mugam and evolved Jazz Mugam. He was born in 1940 and lived with his mother in this one roomed simple apartment. His mother was a music teacher and Vagif learnt music from her. This 3 roomed museum was established in 1989. It has around 1200 artefacts. These museum items include posters, photographs, documents, gramophone records, and personal belongings of Vagif Mustafazade. The museum is currently run by a cousin of Vagif as his wife and daughter have moved to Germany where his daughter Aziza Mustafazadeh is a Jazz Mugam singer, composer and pianist. She is called the "Jazziza" or "The Princess of Jazz". The building has a statue plaque at the corner. It was crafted by Omar Eldarov, who is a member of Parliament these days.
