I spent an afternoon looking at video clips about all aspects of Cambodia. The staff were helpful and enthusiastic about its mission to train filmmakers. I could browse historic and cultural information. I was sorry I didn't have more time to visit or see a full length film.

I saw a free local exhibit highlighting the unsung heroes in Cambodia’s trash/recycling stream - the Edjais. Afterward I went upstairs and watched a few archival videos on Pol Pot which were fascinating.

Created by famous Rithy Pann, The Bophana Center is involved in Khmer Cinema and Documentaries. Interesting projections every friday evening for free.

We stumbled upon this almost accidentally via a blog entry when looking for something beyond the typical tourist spots to fill up the morning on our last day in Phnom Penh. We’re both film, music and photography lovers.
There’s usually exhibitions on and free film showings at the weekend, but although we happened to visit between these times, we were still able to get lost in the films, music and architecture books for over three hours. As this is an archive and not a museum, the experience is more like a public library. You can look up and watch/listen to films and music on one of 4 computer terminals with two headsets each, or there’s a quiet reading area where you can read history and architecture books, though they can’t be removed from that area. (Side note: there’s a very friendly cat who will likely wake up from her nap atop the bookshelves in the reading area to demand your attention.) Many books and films are translated or subtitled in English, but even more are translated into French.
I’d recommend coming after having seen S21 and heard Bophana’s story to get a full understanding of how important the preservation as archive work being done here is. Entry is free but do consider dropping a donation in the box by the front desk.
Whether you’re doing research for a project or simply want to immerse yourself in Cambodian history and culture, this is a worthwhile stop off the beaten track.

On many Friday nights there are wonderful movies shown and they are free. You need to get to Bophana early as the seats in the small theatre fill up quickly.

C'est un bel espace, qui mérite d'être davantage connu. Situé dans un quartier résidentiel, il n'est pas évident à trouver. L'accueil y est chaleureux, même si lors de notre visite il n'y avait pas d'événement qui s'y déroulait. Nous y avons visionné un film qui nous a permis de mieux appréhender l'histoire récente du Cambodge et la folie des Khmers rouges.

Pas grand intérêt pour un touriste de passage à moins d'avoir de la chance. Diffusion de film le samedi fin d'après midi. Expositions temporaires. Possibilité de consulter livres et internet. En tout cas la démarche est super intéressante. Pas de chance pour nous puisqu'il n'y avait rien d'organisé quand nous sommes passés. Une appli peut être également téléchargée voir photos

A public center welcomes to both local people and foreigners. There are a lot of audio-documents talking about culture, history, environment, and so on. Best place for do research about khmer rought achive.

場所は少し分かりにくいですが、あまり観光客が来ない場所なので新鮮な雰囲気でした。ここでは不定期でカンボジアに関する映画も無料で上映しているので夜何もすることがない時は足を運んで見ると良いでしょう。プノンペンの学生とも会えます。

Bophana is the cinema and photography archive of Cambodia. Besides having exhibitions from time to time in the lobby, they have computers upstairs for the ones wanting to explore their collection of movies, videos, photos and audio records. They have a small and very comfortable movie theathe where they screen cambodian movies on saturdays (for free!) and have a very important mission as a platform to keep history and arts thru time. Highly recommended!
