While small, when compared the Red Square or the Zocalo it it a pretty significant to this region.
A nice place for public gatherings.

Disappointed to arrive in Bishkek to find AlaToo Square completely cordoned off and under renovation. Not part of it, all of it.
You can walk around and look at the world from behind a fence but as of August 2024 you cannot access any of it.
It's necessary of course, but bad timing for me!

I hope they clean up the debris soon, the whole square is a construction site. You would think they cordon off better, but no, there are pedestrian footprints on wet cement, and I almost contribute another one
Will be back in a couple of weeks and hopefully see a change. Hearsay, the remodeling is to build a more fancy fountain, similar to those you see in Dubai

After visiting Ala Archa park we drove to Bishkek city for a view of the city center , it was pretty bad traffic on Friday , this square was the 1st we visited and it’s a pretty big square .

Ala-Too square was built in 1984 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Soviet republic of Kirgizia. It was then decorated by an imposing statue of Lenin, which was later moved in 2003 to the smaller Old Square situated behind Kyrgyz State History museum.The Lenin statue was replaced by the Erkindik statue symbolizing freedom. In 2011, yet another statue was inaugurated, that of the great hero Manas the Magnanimous , to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the independence of Kyrgyzstan..Landmark Kyrgyz State History museum is in the background of the equestrian statue of Manas on Ala-Too Square.There is a fountain and during my visit the ground in front of Manas the Great statue was being dug for repairs and hence the Kyrgyzstan Flag was not in place next to the statue. This is the main square of Bishkek city.

I visited Ala-Too Square on my recent trip of Kyrgyzstan. It is a famous square in the heart of Bishkek. It includes the statue of Manas, the large national flag, the History Museum, and a very nice fountain area. This is definitely an area one should visit if visiting Bishkek.

My trip to Kyrgyzstan turned out to be an incredible adventure that exceeded all my expectations. And I especially remember Ala-Too Square, which became a real pearl of this beautiful country.
The first thing that caught my attention about Ala-Too Square was its amazing atmosphere. There is always a bright and energetic aura here, filled with a mixture of cultures and traditions of different peoples. The square has become a meeting place for various groups of people: local residents, tourists, students, youth and even local artists and musicians. On Ala-Too Square you can always find something interesting and unique; on the eve of the holiday there are many different events, drink hot tea with traditional hot flatbreads. Go to the movies There is a cinema right there on the square
One of the main reasons why Ala-Too Square has become so popular among tourists is its beautiful design and architecture. Multi-colored fountains, which I have known about since childhood, symmetrically located polar ones, as well as gazebos with decorations - all this creates harmony and tranquility, ideal for relaxation and contemplation. Every detail of the square is thought out to the maximum and creates a unique atmosphere of the place.
Due to its location, Ala-Too Square has become the historical and cultural center of the city. Surrounding it are famous landmarks, museums and galleries that I visited during my trip. Taking a map of local attractions, I spent several days exploring them and immersing myself in the amazing history and culture of Kyrgyzstan. Ala-Too Square became the starting point for me on this exciting journey.
But the main thing I remember about this square is the people. Polite, hospitable and open, the locals made my trip truly unforgettable. During my stay in the city on the square, I met many interesting and diverse people with whom I talked and shared my impressions. Their enthusiasm and love for their country infected me, and I realized how important it is to learn new cultures and interact with people from different nationalities.
In general, Ala-Too Square became for me the main symbol of this amazing journey to Kyrgyzstan. Its design, atmosphere, history and, of course, people created an unforgettable experience and left it in my heart for a long time. I recommend that everyone who plans to visit this beautiful country not miss the opportunity to visit Ala-Too Square and plunge into its magic.
They look forward to it and try to celebrate it brightly and cheerfully: they decorate the Christmas tree, prepare a variety of dishes, and buy gifts.
Naturally, everything that is most loved and best is put on the table. National dishes usually include beshbarmak, manti, shish kebab, boiled meat, and those generally accepted throughout the post-Soviet space - Olivier salad, chicken, pickles and much more. The Kyrgyz table is not complete without fruits and dried fruits.
During the holidays you will not be bored, there are many events. Theatrical performances and concerts with the participation of pop stars are held in the central square of the city. At least you will know who the Kyrgyzstani people are, although not only Kyrgyzstani people live here, there are also Uzbeks, Uyghurs, Dungans, Koreans, etc. Previously, of course, there were still many nationalities here: Russians, Belarusians, Ukrainians, Germans, but many left in Soviet times in all directions.

Having visited the square, I got the impression that I was in the USSR. 😌
The area is quite large, but since it was very hot outside, there were almost no people, and there weren’t that many cars on the main street.
On the square there is a fountain, monuments, a museum, and we managed to catch the changing of the guard.

This big square you will visit for sure while in the city, Here you will find a museum, a statue of Manas the Great, fountain. Many state-organized celebrations are here. Also changing of guards can be seen here.

I am planning three country to visit in March 2019 Bishkek, Almaty and Tashkent cities for one week on land borders. Can anyone tell me are these safe, which order mean to go first and crossing the border etc. Thanks

I agree, Marshutka's are the best and cheapest way of travel. Did only two countries (Almaty-Bishkek), both are safe.

For example, is it every hour on the hour? Every two hours on the hour? At very specific times?
